i don't think he does it purely out of love.  he tends to be submissive and prefers to be led.  at least, to those he feels he can trust. in this case, hawke.  for a full rival/full friend Fenris, Hawke is a good leader.  it is likely a leftover of his low self-confidence/slave mentality.

I never considered him to be submissive or a born follower. I think it's a remnant of his past life, but I don't think he embraces that at all. Then again my experiences with him are colored by the rivalmance where he's fighting me every step of the way. :P

On another note... People make my head hurt. I keep seeing comments like "Fenris looks like a JRPG character/emo, I hate him. I didn't even bring him anywhere."

I can't believe so many people are completely writing off a fabulous character, never even trying to get to know him, just because of his appearance. Seriously? You're not even going to see if he has something to say? Oh but he has spiky white hair, so that must be the extent of his character. Seriously. HIS HAIR.

I can see were they are coming from about him looking like a character from a JRPG but then again I dont. When i first saw him as a PC when he was announced I was like hell yeah!

People are ruining it for themselves bynot giving him a chance, I gave Isabela a chance in my second game and i'm glad I did, shes awesome

its not that he wants to be submissive. but they go a long way to dehumanize slaves, and it shows. on the rival path he's certainly more combative, but he still shows those little signs.  he has low self-esteem and considers himself worthless, so to follow someone of worth is an obvious choice.  but thats where Hawke must do the rival/friend thing to earn that level of worth.  without hawke's support he completely breaks (see; Selling him to Danarius scene).

and as for his design?  in some ways i find it to be a tad jrpg-ish.  but its not because of the hair. it's the armor. specifically the shirt.  i have trouble seeing the armor-value of the feather shoulders (and theyre not even really feathers...).  its a nice design, but still a little weird looking. i think his shirt would look better completely sleeveless instead of having those jarring shoulder whatsits.  but preference is preference.  i'm usually staring elsewhere.  and by elsewhere i mean his face.  yes.  his face. clearly.

Fenris's looks are what keeps me from mentioning him to gamers that don't play Dragon Age. Because I know they'd go "lolwhut an emo" and I seriously can't be bothered to defend it. Not unless they actually play the game and find him and THEN complains.

And I want to be friends with Isabella in more playthroughs... but can't cause of the speed bugg. Darnit, patch it already, Bioware. D:

Well... One way to start your day is to catch up on 10 or so pages of Fenris discussion XD

Hmmm. I find it interesting what someof you are saying about his mentality. He does seem to struggle with making his own decisions - he even says so himself at some point. To me it seems like he is able to make his own choices, but because of his backgroudn it doesn't come as natural for him as it does for the rest of the characters around him. It actually reinforces the conflict his background and his current life seems to be in, and gives more depth to him as a character

On the tiger reference thing... I actually thought on that a bit to. I connected it with Seheron due to him mentioning jungles there. We don't know for sure if Leto did grow up in Seheron or not, but we do know Fenris spent at least a few months in those jungles so being familiar with tigers that way doesn't seem to be a too big leap of thought. But I also somehow got stuck on the tiger reference for another reason. To me it sounded like Danarius kept Fenris around s a symbol of his might, wealth and power. An exotic and dangerous pet to show of to scare or impress people around him. Much like how wealthy people always have wanted exotic and dangerous pets like Tigers...

It was also very interesting to see that Fenris stayed with Hawke, even though they were fighting for the mages. It just shows how strong love can be.

still, even if we ignore that he's still much more flexible about the mage issue than people give him credit for.  he only really gets "RAWR SMASH ALL MAGES THEY EVIL" when his temper flares.  but we all say things we don't fully mean in temper tantrums.  he's willing to give mages a chance, if there's good enough reason. he never goes out of his way to kick dirt in a mage's face (even if he would enjoy doing so).

but when every damn mage in the game ends up turning to blood magic or demonology, all you ever see is Fenris having reason to complain. i see a lot of people equating Fenris to being an Anders counterpoint.  But he really isnt.  sure, their opinions are on opposite sides of the scales, but Fenris isnt an extremist about his point as Anders is.

'sup rant. i was bored.

I agree that Fenris isn't staying with Hawke solely out of love.

I just did a mage play-through (sided with mages and played a mage) where I romanced Anders (friendship path), and was also friends with Fenris. Fenris considers Hawke to be his only friend, and doesn't care that Hawke is a mage (though he does point out the irony of the fact that his only friend is a mage). It seems that he stands beside Hawke because he trusts him/ her. For Fenris, being able to really trust Hawke is probably what sets Hawke apart from everybody else; I mean, the poor guy can't even trust what's left of his family.

So basically, I think trust is more important than love for Fenris, in regards to whether he's willing to stand beside a Hawke that sides with the mages. I don't think it's because of him being submissive or wanting to be led.

i didn't necessarily mean in this specific case was him wanting to be led, but that its a general trend.  but of course, he wants leadership from someone he can trust.  without that person to trust in, he kind of has a crumbling foundation.

I'm a Zevran fangirl.  I'm totally used to this.

Edit: When Sebastion asks Fenris to come to Starkhaven with him to help train warriors, he refuses saying he's no leader.  Well, he also points out that humans would not want to be trained by an elf, but the Sebastion suggests that he trains elves instead. He doesn't want to lead.

Words like "submissive" are very changed, however.  Just because someone would prefer to follow doesn't make them submissive.  Fenris doesn't strike me as submissive; he speaks up all the time.

He follows you because he wants to , if you haven't gained his respect, he's gonna try to kick your ass if you side with the mages.
I mean you have to do his quest for him to stay with you , means freeing him from danarius etc..
Maybe he feels like he owned you something , and you're worth going against what he believes should be right.

I sided with the mages , because what meredith orders is butchery ,there's teenager in a circle and innocent folks ,(ok there's more crazy abomination by the end but hey whatever...)
I'm not saying that siding with the templars is wrong , it's not , they have good reason to try to stop the mages.
Just the way they want to stop them is really wrong in my book. It's a difficult choice anyway and nice people gonna die no matter what you do , sadly.

then maybe i should rephrase? i am summing up his low self-esteem and sense of worthlessness, his preference to be led, and his need to stand by another's side.  he has a tendency to run away from his problems when he doesn't have support. or he just plain caves in.

i still see him as very outspoken, despite these things. he's got layers and complexity.

Jack, no question.

Jack hates everyone, whereas Fenris directs his hate towards mages and slavers. Jack's tattoos hide scars, and declare, quite loudly and purposefully, "stay the f*** away from me." Fenris's tattoos, on the other hand, give him cool glowy powers.

Jack.

Fenris seems like he can actually become a functioning member of society, Jack seems screwed up to the point of no return.

And just to add to a comment about Fenris's hair made earlier... seriously, people write him off cause of it? Damn. His hair's what hooked me in via an image even before I bought the game and heard him speak. I have a thing for characters with white hair... add in pointy ears and a tortured personality and I'm won over.

If people are so put off by a hair colour that they won't include him as a party member, all I can say is that there are mods for that. Problem solved. I like the white hair myself. It's striking and what's wrong with that? He's not the boy next door and doesn't need to look like one.

He just has to be a martyr. It's sad that I can't just hand him over to Cullen or something. Frankly I think tranquilizing him (if it's even possible) would've been a far more fitting result of his actions than that lame stab in the back.

I agree.  Heck, I would like to stab him in the throat, not the back.  And no I'm not generally a violent person.  Just when I play video games.

I just think he deserves to have Hawke look him in the face when killing him. Don't get me wrong, I love Anders and nearly teared up the one time I played a Hawke that stabbed him, but it felt wrong to stab him in the back like that. Ugh. Poor Anders.

It's easier that way. Why make it harder for yourself? Snuff the guy and go do other stuff. There is no reason to linger on the subject longer than neccessary.

Well, it's probably too subjective to really discuss it in sufficient detail in the Fenris thread. So Have a Fenris instead.
