And Fenris does NOT say he has never had sex with anyone.  Even if he's talking about sex (and to me, that conversation sounded like closeness or caring for someone, NOT sex), he says he has no memories of before, and has not let anyone close since he escaped.

Fenris does not strike me as virginal.  His approach to Hawke was too assured -- his getting together with isabela where she talks about how good a lover he is... same thing.  I was actually surprised that people thought he was talking about being a born again virgin on the forums -- I had to replay the conversation to see if I missed something.  

Not to mention his party banter with Isabela. I think Fenris has had sex before, but not with anyone he cares deeply about.

Exactly.  The two banters with Isabela I think are telling.  Of course, you could always say in the first he's lying to her, but the second -- if it were his first time, or second time, it doesn't seem like this very experienced woman would be talking like it was some of the best sex she's had.

I got that feeling as well.  

To me, though, what is important about that conversation with him is that he has kept himself at a distance from everyone.  Hawke is the first person he's actually letting get close to him.  In an emotional way.  He's letting the walls come down with Hawke.  I think it's far more touching if he's talking about emotional intimacy rather than physical intimacy.

ARGH it's happened again, trying to play a mage and romance Anders but Fenris is swooping in again. I just can't romance anyone else, i'm getting annoyed now. I was even trying to be rival but he keeps liking things even if i'm all magey. I swear my first playthrough before i re-did it he got to 50+ rivlary so easily.

It's just not meant be, Fenris has to be romanced in all my playthrough's, I might not to recruit him just so I can have a chance

Hello everyone!

I have not posted here in ages - I wanted to finish the game first and I got hit with the slow bug (which meant I had to restart both my ongoing mage/rogue games at the end of act II - sigh).

I am gleefully catching up and I am officially declaring myself a fangirl for posterity.

So far, I went with the Rivalmance with Fenris, I really enjoy the way it develops. Next is going to be down the friendship path.

Which one do you enjoy more?

It's a tough call, because I love both.  After experiencing both a couple of different ways, I think I slightly prefer the Rivalmance. In my playthroughs, it never plays as them being nasty or hateful to one another, just honest, passionate and opinionated. 

I think both Fenris and Hawke can benefit from having someone around to keep their more extreme tendencies in check. 

From the romance RP standpoint, the 3 year "break" is easier for me to swallow in a Rivalmance, and the reconciliation dialogue is more satisfactory and makes a little more sense.

Closest I got to romancing Anders is on a newer PT: Got left by Fenris --> Went to Anders --> Anders showed up at night --> Anders brought up Fenris (and called him a name) --> Hawke: Fuuuu--! Don't call him that! GTFO! I can't do this! Yep that is pretty much what will probably happen to my next Hawke. She will try to romance Anders and Fenris will just win by default.

A matter of interpretation then. "Are you saying what I think you're saying?" sounded to me like they were definetely talking about sex!

Well, when he went to clarify, it just sounds more like he's talking about actual intimacy.

Hawke: Are you saying what I think you're saying?
Fenris: If there was someone before, I have no memory of it.
Hawke: There was no one after you escaped, even?
Fenris: I stayed nowhere for long. Who would I trust?
Fenris: I didn't think I needed anyone. Or wanted anyone. Until now.

While that could be about sex, it just sounds more like letting someone close to him.  And definitely nothing is mentioned about when he was a slave.  And that makes sense if you're talking about actually caring for someone -- as a slave, he wouldn't. 

I think it's probably ambiguous on purpose.

Took the time to use my laptop to check out youtube videos on parts of Fenris stuff I missed... ended up watching the clip where you hand him back over to Danarius and... GAWD. He gets all hurt eyes... cant even look at Hawke when he's taken away. ): Way to gloom up my day.

I would be willing to say that this PT is en route to continuing with Fenris, but... I noticed her combat speed seemed really, really slow yesterday, and then someone mentioned the slow bug a few posts back and I looked it up... and I think that character got it. (OH NOES! But she's so perty and I spent a full hour making her, plus multiple Black Emporium trips to do editting! She and Fenris are so awesome together! **SNIFFSOB**)

When I found out that even though he freaks out and bails on Hawke he's still perfectly capable of keeping it casual with Isabela I wasn't too happy, haha... but once I got over the jealous "wtf dude??" feelings I thought it was actually really sweet. Indisputable evidence of how much Hawke means to him.

I think Fenris has an anti-fish thing. Which is sad-- I love fish and I project that into my characters.

Fenris and Mage!Hawkette: The only thing standing between their relationship is a fish. But what's a scaly, smelly fish to them?

Fenris and Rogue!Hawkette: Fenris will kill Rogue!Hawkette. She sleeps with a stuffed fish, wears fish jewelry, carves fish into the hilt of her daggers...

Apparantly, it's a glitch if you get Isabela's Friendship buff (it's supposed to give you and her a +5% combat speed). That PT does have the friendship with Isabela-- but then my Male!Rogue!Hawke had Isabela's Friendship too, and he was fine.

I always try all the different romances to see how the different reactions and story development. And I think this time I am setting myself up for major failure. Every time Fenris swoops in (yes there is swooping) and starts to talk all my resolve is gone.

The Rivalmance seemed to come natural to the story. I can't wait to go home and start another play-through tonight.

@ejoslin a bit off topic but I really want to thank you for your Zev fixes. they made a huge difference in DA:O - you are awesome!

You say it better than I do. 

Those three years as a friend make no sense to me at all.  As a rival, I can see stupid pride on both sides getting in the way.  And then when you get the flirt option in Alone, Hawke FINALLY quits being stupid when s/he sees he actually needs someone at that moment.

At least, that's the way I see it
