I always try all the different romances to see how the different reactions and story development. And I think this time I am setting myself up for major failure. Every time Fenris swoops in (yes there is swooping) and starts to talk all my resolve is gone.

The Rivalmance seemed to come natural to the story. I can't wait to go home and start another play-through tonight.

@ejoslin a bit off topic but I really want to thank you for your Zev fixes. they made a huge difference in DA:O - you are awesome!

You're welcome!  And thank you :D  Zev is such a great character -- those bugs just ruined so much :/

Edit: I'm doomed to be ToP today.  I'll find a screenshot...

@ejoslin this is why I only did rivalmance with Fen - it makes no sense otherwise!

Hello everyone!

I have not posted here in ages - I wanted to finish the game first and I got hit with the slow bug (which meant I had to restart both my ongoing mage/rogue games at the end of act II - sigh).

I am gleefully catching up and I am officially declaring myself a fangirl for posterity.

So far, I went with the Rivalmance with Fenris, I really enjoy the way it develops. Next is going to be down the friendship path.

Which one do you enjoy more?

Just wondering...

It's a tough call, because I love both.  After experiencing both a couple of different ways, I think I slightly prefer the Rivalmance. In my playthroughs, it never plays as them being nasty or hateful to one another, just honest, passionate and opinionated.

I think both Fenris and Hawke can benefit from having someone around to keep their more extreme tendencies in check.

From the romance RP standpoint, the 3 year "break" is easier for me to swallow in a Rivalmance, and the reconciliation dialogue is more satisfactory and makes a little more sense.

They need Bianca  to pin them against the wall with crossbow bolts if things get to extreme or Aveline's iron fist.

My mage romances anders but that's only because I skipped bait and switch on purpose! Only intended to do a speed run with a mage anyway as I didn't get on with it very well! I am a rogue girl through and through and all my rogues are fenris girls :D!

Off topic slightly, or going back a few pages! I live NIN, Trent reznor is just a rock god! Oops guess I just showed my age too lol

No. Don't.

It's fine. Hawke doesn't mind his/her blood covered Fenris.

How do you get the slow bug? is it a romance thing

It is related to Isabela (and some people are exeperiencing with Sebastian as well) friendship and her buff. It does slow down Hawke's combat to a crawl as the game progresses.

Oooh, I wonder if it's Sebastian on mine... This PT was the first one to get him to max Friendship and the first one to get this bug. I got Isabela at max Friendship on my Male!Rogue!Hawke and was perfectly fine, but he failed to max out Sebastian (very close though)

I got that bug one my rogue playthrough. Didn't appear until like the two last missions in Act 3 though. Frustrating thing, had to play the other companions during that time. I don't dare making friends with Isabella anymore and I think she's difficult to get to rival without being downright rude...

And I could *never* skip Bait and Switch. Ever. D: I'd end up asking myself "Is Fenris dead/recaptured now" through out the game. xD

Fenris: "fish, fish, and more fish, ugh! Let's just find those damn crates."

the way he says fish! LOL

I think Fenris has an anti-fish thing. Which is sad-- I love fish and I project that into my characters.

Fenris and Mage!Hawkette: The only thing standing between their relationship is a fish. But what's a scaly, smelly fish to them?

Fenris and Rogue!Hawkette: Fenris will kill Rogue!Hawkette. She sleeps with a stuffed fish, wears fish jewelry, carves fish into the hilt of her daggers...

Since he grew up on an island, maybe he had to eat a lot of fish.  I used to like seafood and ate a lot of it, then ended up doing a 180 and can't stand the stuff.

I've been lurking through this thread for a while now and with all the Fenris related music popping up i figured i'd leave this here since hearing it reminds me of this thread more often than not.

I have officially given up on romancing anyone but Fenris, dman you DG and Gideon, my life is yours.

EDIT: i meant he as in Fenris, why did i put she? I'm going crazy

Well my first thought would be Mightyena (or Poocheyena) but that's just because of the 'little wolf' thing I guess....I'll have to consider this!

I got that feeling as well.

To me, though, what is important about that conversation with him is that he has kept himself at a distance from everyone.  Hawke is the first person he's actually letting get close to him.  In an emotional way.  He's letting the walls come down with Hawke.  I think it's far more touching if he's talking about emotional intimacy rather than physical intimacy.

I'm sorry, but that's a perfect segue into a song I wanted to request for then playlist:
Walls by All Time Low
It's not perfect, sincei t's really a teenaged boy (I think) talking but a few lines make it worth it

I'm gonna break down these walls
I built around myself
I wanna fall so in love
With you and no one else
Could ever mean half as much
to me as you do now
Together we'll move on
just don't turn around
Let the walls break down

So do many Fenris fans just think of him as an Abercrombie & Fitch model?

I'd like to respond to this because I think I've seen this observation come up many times in many threads that are not this one.  I can't speak for all Fenris fans as far as why he or she feels the way they do about the character, but I can give you my reasoning as to why I think he's absolutely wonderful.

I've said it in this thread before and I'll say it again, I wasn't really sold until I took him to the Arishok during Blackpowder Courtesy and watched him speak the Qun.  He seemed oddly knowledgeable about Qunari culture despite the fact that he couldn't really read (I knew that Tevinter was at war with the Imperium but it wasn't until conversations in Act II that I began to understand the length/quanlity of his interactions).  That incident illustrates that he's incredibly perceptive, and highly intelligent.  He's able to pick up knowledge and internalize it in a way that one would not expect. I respect people with big brains (I'm missing mine so yeah) and this interaction implies a somewhat philosophical mind.  It's unexpected and very interesting.

He's highly perceptive.  He will make some surprisingly astute comments about the nature of power and such if click on him at the right places.  His observations show a highly analytical mind which I tend to dig in a person, but that's just me.

Fenris can be funny.  He can joke and he laughs at sarcastic Hawke's jokes.  He has a pretty dry wit, but when he's snarking at someone who's deserving I find him to be hysterical.  The fact that he has a bit of a gambling problem adds a more "earthy" dimension to his personality.  With Hawke and Varric's influence, I think he learns to relax a little as evidenced by the cardplaying conversation he has with Aveline.  This is a good thing.  We are all positively influenced by others in real life and I like to see that translated into fiction.  I like to think that makes Fenris come across more sympathetic.

Mostly, I feel like Fenris and Hawke's relationship is pretty complex, at times very tenuous, but ultimately rewarding.  Fenris can be downright cruel to characters like Merrill, and Bethany.  I'm not even going to argue that it's right, but these flaws highlight and clash witht the parts of him that are admirable, you know kind of like a real person. I also can't think of a single character in Dragon Age 2 (well, except for Varric) who is without them.  No doubt, he is bruised character, utterly survivalist, and sometimes without mercy in his dealing with other people, but  he is also gracious, empathetic (see Oranna), insightful, intelligent, apologetic, and if you stick with him –– quite loyal.  If you romance him, you really feel as if he loves Hawke, and I mean even the parts that he doesn't like about Hawke and that is the most authentic kind of love one can ask for.  To see the worst and best of someone and still care for them, is a relationship that is truly valuable.

I hope that answers your question. We do look at Fenris and go "oooh, hot elf with deep voice" very nice.  But that wouldn't hold my attention for very long.  I'd be bored if that were all there was to him.
I apologize for the wall of text, and I hope I don't sound like a psycho.

Well said. This is what I mean when I say that the Fenris romance is, to me, by far the most honest one.
