I'm just assuming there's an unspoken 'no-sex' agreement. Otherwise lines like "You have me" and "I hope you'll stay with me" make no sense.

Aka, at some point a 'Fenmance' playthrough would have involved a mid-three-year-gap conversaion that they mutually agreed to be together, sans sex. (since sex w/ hawke brings up pesky things about the past)

and at the very least, that's what My Hawke and Fen have done in my horribly written Fic that's not finished>.>

*points at sig for selfish plug*

I put them back together, somewhat, when he comes and comforts her.  Just seems something fragile could have been established then.  3 years IMO is still too long to be in that limbo, but for them not to be together at all makes no sense given the act 3 dialog in Alone, Questioning Beliefs, and with Zevran and Anders.

Then the codex doesn't really fit, but it doesn't really fit anyway, for when it triggers.

Well, you can if you're on a computer.
S'ok Xbox, ilu man. I know my comp wouldn't be able to handle DA. X3

EDIT: Oh lord, I'm in the left most part of The Docks, and everytime I look at the minimap I have to giggle. XD;

The area with the shady merchant? Yeah, I keep looking at it and going, OMFG, why the hell did they make that hallway so phallic????

Almost every map in the game has a phallic shape.  Check out the 'Act of Mercy' quest.  There's a two little parts that poke off the map with a little...head.

....Oh lord.....*headdesks*

Another random interjection from me:

Fenris and Sebastian, over the course of their little banters, seem to reach at least a bit of a common ground. It starts looking like Fenris goes to the Chantry from time to time, seems to be getting at least a little religious. I don't find it a problem, but I wonder what you lot think he finds in the Maker and the Chantry?

Like most things, I imagine he keeps it private, but I think what Seb tells him about the Maker caring, no matter where a person comes from or what they've suffered probably draws him to it. The Maker knows Fenris' past and doesn't judge him and has protected him and guided him out of slavery. Though it's probably a conflicted faith.

I think it's another way for Fenris to find peace for himself and his mind and soul. Hawke provides a kind of peace in his/her own way, while the Chantry provides another. Fenris' life has been so violent and troubled, and the peace in the Chantry, for if you walk into that building, you can feel the peace and calm there, even through the game. That must appeal to Fenris, at least in some way.

been reading about the abuse topic of Danarius/fenris. I have to quip in here, as a child abuse survivor, from my own perspective, the fear is always there. It doesnt matter if you see that person years after you [ as fenris was] made a living weapon , you still see that person with the same Fear and hopelessness, I really think BW did a terrific job of Fen's eyes when he first sees Danarius in the hanged man. He had been a slave since birth, we cant imagine how many ways a person may be degraded, abused, mentally physically etc. the sense of hopelessness must be pervading!
In the hanged Man, i see Hawke stepping in there saying her/his line not a slave or whatever as lending their strength to get out of the past trauma , to step forward to strike, It also makes perfect sense to me about the Fog warrior slaying... when you cannot dare believe in another life, and give up to the tides of disappointment. call it conditioning... it happens.
So even a 3 year gap in the relationship is ridiculous sounding, there may have been the underlying strength companionship that was not sexual in nature, to heal and osmotically cross the wounded soul. I think he would be worth waiting for, and my Hawke always does!
sorry for long text....

This. I HATE the banter with him and Isa if you don't romance either. I was romancing Anders with the one playthrough, but I still wanted to deck her.

I support this devious idea. Posted Image Of course, that could go oh-so-wrong.  Isabela does tend to write in a "flowery romance" style.

... I just envisioned Fenris speaking in Shakespearian, and I'm not sure whether to laugh or swoon.  I am confused.

The problem with the three years that I have...  it IS too long.  Nothing is spoken about -- he refuses to discuss it at all.  So basically you have a guy who started a relationship, but then ran out after having a one night stand and never would speak of it.  And if you read his last codex, you see that during that three year time, the last year of it he is talking about leaving Kirkwell with increasing frequency -- he would have left already had he not felt indebted to Hawke -- not affection, indebted.  And while it is clear he still has feelings, he also is talking about leaving forever.

So how long do you wait? 6 months? 1 year? 3 years? 10 years? The rest of your life?  Had he been willing to speak of it, I could see perhaps.  Had it only been a year, I could also see it.  If there was a tenuous relationship there, yes, perhaps.

Gah, that gap just bugs me.  The codex makes it worse.

I have a feeling the Codex is bugged. Unlike the other LI's, Fenris' says its never resolved. Someone with technical skills should find out for us!

YA Eso, I cant totally believe it was liek that even if you gave the space and time to heal, had to be something to keep the hand out. I dont know what you mean by codex .. In DAO they told something about the person, I miss that journal format to be honest, if i missed a dialog I could go back and read it .
Im Not the brightest crayon in the box, but i didnt see much written for most of the characters.I just keep having hope you and your magic helpers will fix this romance like you did Zev';s and Cmessaz did Alistairs... its enough to keep me going... LOL this hope!

If you really love someone, you'll wait forever. Time is not an obstacle, no matter how painful or maddeningly hopeless it can be. I can't speak for many people out there, but it is true. Not to mention that when Fenris asks for Hawke's forgiveness, you have the choice of telling him that you've moved on. It really just depends on Hawke. No one expects him/her to wait for Fenris to come around forever, if at all.

Honestly, I don't buy that.  Maybe it's because I'm old enough that I'm just not that romantic any more.  Not 3 years. 3 years really is about the time it takes to actually mourn a loss. IRL, I would be completely creeped out if, 3 years after someone dumped me, he was acting jealous if I flirted with someone else.

See, that's why I think there has to be some sort of reconciliation in there.  Or the 3 years is a much longer gap than was originally intended.  Because the way Fenris and Anders and Hawke act, it does not seem like Hawke was dumped 3 years prior and that's that -- no more discussion.

I really DO love the Isabela x Fenris pairing.

Even if you don't romance Fenris, its good to see he's happy in the arms of a pirate. Those two are really adorable and mad sexy.

Yeah, it is interesting.

For me the key to that three year gap have always been the lines, "I thought it better if you hated me."  It was my feeling that the self-loathing he has is so deeply ingrained I don't think he feels he deserves Hawke.  In those three years, he hopes that Hawke will move on and forget it about him.   There's not doubt he loves her/him (at least in my mind).  You don't carry around a scarf like that for three years and NOT love a person, but...that amount intimacy in search a short time is bound to frighten him.  Considering he has no memory of any sort of intimacy or emotional attachment save the Fog Warriors and we know what happened there.

The lines, "I'm still here, Fenris" remind him that despite all of this, despite the terrible manner in which he has treated Hawke since than that night, Hawke is still willing to be there.  I think it finally brings a bit of closure to the one thing he has always wanted: family.

The other thing that works against him his stoicism.  What he might call "debt" might run deeper than that.  Fenris would NOT admit those sorts of feelings to anyone.  I like to think that some of the codex entries aren't necessarily third person ominiscient and are more third person limited in storytelling scope.  Part of it Varric's perspective on what has been going on? I think the question for me (also like you) is: why would Hawke wait three years for him to realize that he was being an idiot?  That's an answer that varies, I think.

No wall of text this time! ^^

EDIT: To add a few skipped words.
