I see a few similarities between Fenris and Valen. Both were slaves, both are warriors, both are broody and can be kinda crabby and kinda sweet. Both escaped slavery and kill their masters, Valen did his before he met the PC and Fenris does it with PC's help. The main difference between them is their struggles. Valen literally has to fight against his very nature, his demon blood. Fenris' fight is for his freedom and to put aside his anger.

I love them both dearly, but I still find Valen more interesting (don't kill me). Posted Image I doubt any character, no matter how awesome, will boot Valen out of the #1 spot on my favorite game romances list. Fenris is tied at #3 with Garrus, and Robert Black from The Aielund Saga (player made module for NWN) is #2 not that you all cared. Posted Image

Of course my favorite character ever is Deekin. Posted Image

Valen Shadowbreath is from Hordes of the Underdark an expansion pack to Neverwinter Nights and a sequel to Shadows of Undrentide which is where Deekin is from (Deekin is a kobold and not romancable, but so darn cute. And unless my memory fails me David Gaider once said was his favorite character he ever created, at least at the time). The Aielund Saga is a player made module by Savant using the Aurora toolset that came with Neverwinter Nights. Garrus of course is from Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 (but only romancable in the latter) and may not be the be everyone's cup of tea.

Hmmm, I want to add some Carver squee. I LOVE Carver. I love how he defends Mage!Hawke to Fenris. And Gray Warden Carver does me so proud :D He's got principles and he loves his brother/sister -- but he needs to get out from under their shadow!

Poor guy, Little Hawke. *sigh* Varric...

Carver is great, I <3 him too............ :D Even though everything you say to him seems to increase rivalry it really just feels like loving sibling rivalry... I tend to get shaggy haired Carver too and he is nice to look at (hey... not MY brother......... :P;))

I've never played NWN, but I might have to, I adore Gaider, and if /he/ loves a character...well...

Oh. no-no, I /know/ about Garrus. He's my favorite character n.n;
When I was a nooblet to Bioware games, and playing ME1, like 2 years ago, I sat back, looked at all the love interests and said:
WHY IS GARRUS NOT AN OPTION? ;-;

I can't remember exactly what Isa says when she returns with the relic as a rival, but the general idea is that Hawke won't be the hero this time because Isabela is the one with the power to save the day. It's very mocking and funny, and I wish I had the exact wording because it's great. Especially since moments later, you have the power to hand her over to the Arishok. :P

I think I prefer the Friend one, though, she's so frikkin indignant. Like Hawke is a disease or something, turning her all good and responsible. XDDD
I dueled the Arishok for her though. As a Force Mage, which was /so/ much easier than with my rogue. BUGS FTW!

My first playthrough my Andersmanced Hawke was so shocked and stunned the best she could manage was "get out of my sight." So she let him live but only because she didn't have time to think. She was just SHOCKED. But I went back and had her kill him. I felt like that was better....not for her...but... My poor first run Hawke. Man...she had it rough.

there should be an option...where before you tell him to leave, you should stab him somewhere. it would be his arm, it could be his thigh, anywhere non-vital. The guy's the healer anyways, he's gonna fix himself. There's going be a scar or whatever, and that's ever better. I would want my Hawke to tell him "I bet it hurts huh? Well, the families of those in the Chantry you just killed will be in much more pain than this. I'm not going to kill you, because I want you to remember this moment, and death is just an easy way out for you. I'm not going to give you what you want, I want you to forever think back to this, where you realized the only person that believed in you no long does. Now...get OUT of MY sight"

YEAH!

^ Read for some Anders catharsis

Well, if it wasn't for your writing, that idea of being stabbing Anders in non-vital area would not have been in my head :)

Ice spells tend to work too, as well running for your life. Or I'm just incredibly lucky that three out of four times I cast one, the ice spells stick long enough for me to throw an AOE and take a health potion and lyrium potion.

Ice spells are such a game breaker. On bosses, at least. I do /so/ love watching a dragon fight in slo mow....where was I even going, oh right:

Force mage has an ability that is basically a slo-mo aoe spell, the closer people are to the center, the slower their move and attack speed is.
On my xbox, casting it on him made him completely still until it wore away, and after enough castings, he stayed still even when it went away. ANd I just spammed non-ability attacks with my staff till he died. (rather than, you know, using an ability on him and accidentally snapping him out of his bug)
Cheap? Yes.
But I can't say I don't love that bug.

I'll remember that then. :o

I was never a fan of Kaidan, set against the other characters, who despite their problems were usually very up beat, he seemed to angst too much. And then, in ME2? When he's a jerlk to you (I didn't have my ME1 info on my Xbox, so I had to play with the default for ME2 where everything is crap) wanted to punch him.
Garrus is just awesome. That's all there is too it, and when I read your sig, I remember him saying that line, like his actual voice 8D;
He's so wonderfully deadpan.

Ooh, I liked Valen too. And I second Aeryn, the some of the fandom's take on a tiefling is a bit disturbing :P

Curious that if David Gaider himself didn't bring Valen into the conversation about Fenris, I probably wouldn't have seen the influece. They are quite different, to various degrees of intensity. Both keep their own council and bloody stubborn though. Well, that, and their trouble maintaning the veneer of calm for various reasons.

Huh. Nwn days... I miss Deekin :)

*catches up with the thread* God it moves fast! Today I finished my first playthrough! "Nothing will keep me from you" God that line makes my heart pitter patter. He is kind of possessive in his passion it seems, but I can't blame him. Considering that he has lost everything in his life, it makes sense that he wants to keep Hawke and make it work.
He is actually really sweet on the inside. I was having an argument with a friend of mine in a MMO today, he kept saying that he was emo and I seriously don't see it at all. He doesn't whine or cry, he is just angry - justifiably so! So, yes. Let them come. We will make them pay. :devil:
Also I snickered at the part where Varrick at the end says that everyone left eventually, going on their own paths... "Except for Fenris of course." :D Yay!
Can't wait to see how DA3 pans out lol. WILL there be a DA3?

Edit for typo again lol XD

I don't see Hawke being all that much different, at that point. I mean, it is very possible that her entire family (sans uncle and cousin) are dead, and she just had to kill her friend.
So. Yea.
Very clingy. In a good way, I think. :bandit:

This. She just *grates* on me. And, no DA character I've ever played (DA:O OR DA2) has ever been keen on blood magic or blood mages - and my blood mage body count is very high as a result.  (Yes, I realize perhaps the greatest irony is that the Joining is based in blood magic...)

I'm more than happy to rip into her for it, and to get free Fenris standing when I do it. :devil: However, I also think his comment about someone Merril cares about making a sacrifice for her in Act 3 is one of the best harsh-but-true comments in the game.

cant ya blame him for being "emo"? like you said (Kakashi), he's got every right to be a bit...angry

Hawke taught him so much, about love/trust/tolerance/that he's not alone...etc etc. Hawke is almost his home, his sense of belonging. They don't have to agree, but Hawke supported him in many ways and that's something he's never had.

In some ways, it doesn't come off to me as possessive so much as protective and/or loyal. And, in that context, I
love it. I'm very similar - I am not possessive of my husband at all (I know better, and I'm very fortunate that I don't have to be), but I can be fiercely protective if I feel he's being impugned, threatened, or maligned in front of me. Heck, this applies to anyone I care about. :)

In my mind at least, Carver has a lot of respect for Fenris. At least partially because he's such a talented swordsman, but probably also because his number one priority is being his own man, which is Carver's whole issue. He gives so much crap to everyone, but he doesn't even try that shtick with Fenris, he just keeps asking him about himself like he's interested in Fenris as a person. Which of course makes me giddy, since they're my two favorite characters. <3

Wow...this is actually making me consider playing a mage. So Carver actually does grow up a bit? He annoyed the heck out of me when I saw him in my husband's mage playthrough.
