Anders personally turned me off from the start because I was in love with his VA from Awakening. So, started out on the wrong foot.
The romance itself is interesting and passionate and tragic, which are all fine by me, but two things killed it for me - when he all but begs/guilt trips Hawke into letting him move in, and when he lies about the cure and again begs/guilt trips Hawke into helping him even though he lied about the cure. There's just no trust to be found imo. When the endgame came around, all I could think was, "He was using Hawke this whole time." And he WANTS you to kill him - which means he still is using Hawke even then. Any affection or love in the relationship looked like hollow lies then. It just gives me this unhealthy, twisted, empty feeling.
I don't mind Anders outside a romance, though. It's just not a romance for me.
It's passionate, indeed, but it's also poisonous.
Have you tried making Anders tell you why he was up to with the "cure" thing? I tried, and god it's more guilt trip. He pretty much make this "ugh" look and questioned you instead, about how if your "promises" of helping the mages are all for show. Basically, he's saying if you help him, you help the mages; and you if don't, you're liar. If you help him anyway, Hawke will say "fine but i'm going to remember how you blackmailed me into it".
I wanted to punch him.
Afterwards, if you talk to him, there will be a convesation where you can ask him about this cure, and he'll admit there was no cure to begin with and that he lied, WHILE looking defiant the whole time. So, you're pretty much spot on, there's no trust. He talks about it, wants you to blindly help him. It's like what Sebastian said (word for word) "
He's a dangerous man[/i]. And selfish. Whatever he promised[/i], don't think he[/i]'ll ever put you above his[/i] own needs"
[/i]At least with Fenris, he might be broody and angry, he tells you like it is. He's right all along too. Sigh.
