That said, his problem with mages and their dangers don't seem to be with the average mage spell, but the potential they have to use those abilities or abilities granted them by demons to rule over others.

Quoted for truth. This is a big one. Rule over others? Enslave others! Fenris hates slavery, remember? Fenris has a big issue about slavery of any kind (hear him complain about flesh being sold everywhere, slavery or not, if you go to the Blooming Rose). If anything, he sees people as potential victims versus potential slavers. Mages, with their power, by default fall on the "potential slaver" end of the spectrum, hence his gut response is to be very, very wary around them, and assume they'll use that power unless proven otherwise.

Laurelinde: grr. I could have sworn I listened to that one a while back. But all the vo files are named with numbers and I can't find it now. If I stumble on it again, I'll pm the name :)
------------
Hrm. My apologies for tenses, wierd grammar and punctuation. Non-native speaker here :P Couldn't resist a promt, however.

Prompt: Book without name
(Rivalry path, post Bitter Pill, with mage Hawke)

Would he toss this back at her, like he almost did with the first book she gave him, Hawke mused, running her fingers over leather binding of the nondescript tome. To bring it over would be a transparent excuse to force conversation, but she just couldn't muster a more creative approach. Fenris has been avoiding her. Every time she had stopped over to request his company or aid for a task, he already had a contract arranged. And recently, the lights at the ghastly mansion of his remained unlit for a fortnight, and she truly feared he had just decided to leave.

The news since reached her that the elf was still in the city, but his brief absence had rattled her. She was so certain he couldn't hurt her worse than he already had by walking away after their night. It appeared he still could.

So when she spotted his lanky frame hunched over a book in his lap after crossing the threshold of his mansion the next day, she couldn't help but sound bitter.

"So you are taking lessons, after all. From Varrick? Or is Isabella teaching her friend fiction? Maker knows she had probably made you a better offer than I."

In retrospect, it was a foolish thing to say. She came bringing a peace offering. All she wanted was some reassurance that he was going to stay in her life, as an acquaintance at least, or business partner, hell someone. But their tempers flared the moment she had opened that pretty mouth of hers, and their stubborn pride was now urging them on.

The book she intended to give him was flung in his face, and he dodged it, breathing out a curse in Tevinter. She matched it with a biting Ferelden profanity which was almost endearing, were those words not accompanied by a threatening sparkle of static that brought his lyrium markings flashing to life. What they yelled at each other after, she could hardly remember, and he didn't speak of who had caused the destruction of Tevinter statue over the fireplace, or the burn marks on the divan. But when the words were exhausted and silence had settled over the chaos  they wrought, she stalked out of the mansion in a state of inner turmoil which was worse than when she arrived, and he had just buried his head in his hands.

Her spontaneous visit had brought her no peace, but the next day he didn't show on her doorstep to return the offending tome, and the next time when she braved a visit to his mansion to ask for his help, he agreed.

@Rheia That would be amazing, thank you! I swear I've gone through and listened to all of them - found two 'Venhedis'-es (pronounced differently), a bucketload of 'No'-s, a handful of chuckles and any number of angry mage rants but not that particular one (and it's almost my favourite thing he says.)

Still....my ears thank the nice person who ripped them all (and Mr. Emery of course!)

I'm not usually a fan of first person, but that story handles it wonderfully.  It is a good piece to read.

This question is shifting gears a bit, but does anyone else wonder what ultimately happens regarding Fenris' memories? Obviously, some memories are triggered during "Alone", but not all. So does resuming intimacy with Hawke trigger further memories, or does it become less of an issue without the fear of Danarius constantly present?

I can see it either way.
It could always be an issue, but now he's learned to move past it so that he can stay with Hawke. Or with Danarius gone, his past "settled", I can see his mind sort of... focusing more on "now" and not on his past. So he would have "moved on", in a way.

My guess is he eventually regains his memories, now that his crap is dealt with and he's with someone where he doesn't have to hide it or run from it.  It seems to be all there.  I doubt he would talk about it much or want to dwell on it.  But I hope if he appears again, we hear something about his mother.

My personal theory (and hope) is that after he runs away from Hawke, his memories start coming back very slowly on their own, in fragments and flashes. Otherwise, I find it hard to believe that he'd have enough desire to risk Danarius tracking him down when he sends letters to his sister. There has to be some emotional something that makes him take that dive, imo. When he meets Varania, he starts describing them playing together as children, and even though it seems like he's remembering it as he speaks, he doesn't really seem that surprised by the actual remembering, if that makes sense.

I don't think the sex was so much the key to bringing his memories back as it was a release (huurrr, pun intended) of the stranglehold he keeps on his emotions and thoughts. He let his guard down and let himself feel something other than bitterness and hate, and that clicked something in his mind. So, I don't think he's having spontaneous memory lapses each time he beds Hawke...at least I hope not. Because that could be potentially very creepy. :pinched:

It's interesting, though - I wish there'd been more talks about his memories.

I see the sex with Hawke as a catalyst that sort of breaks down a wall he's had in place for a long time.  I like likening it to Angel and his perfect moment of happiness.  WIthin that moment, something was let loose and he experienced happiness, something he had yet to experience before - something he didn't think he deserved or would ever achieve given his status as a slave.  Slaves did not want to ask for things, after all.

The strangehold his anger and hate had on him was momentarily released and it allowed him to have a 'breakthrough' of sorts and the memories of times gone by flooded in.

I could see a slow trickle of memories starting to return after the initial sex. He does remember his sister pretty easily upon seeing her.   The gates are open, it only would take the right stimulii to inspire something to walk on through so to speak.

I agree that overcoming the mental hangups could have played a big part in starting to remember. Maybe part of the reason he couldn't remember was because he clung so much to what happened during his slavery, specifically. Letting that go, letting the past go, and no longer focusing on one aspect of it so much, could've made the rest of his past come back easier to him.

Also...

This is sweet, whether you pair them or not.
