Fenris discussion thread, seems like the right place to ask, unless this is reserved for gushing and squeeing
What's the appeal of Fenris? Not trying to antagonize anyone here, i just really don't see it. He's the kind of good-looking, dark, brooding anti-hero with a troubled past that i feel like i've seen a hundred times before. Wanted to use him in my second playthrough because of his two-handed skillz, but had to switch him with Aveline because he was so utterly boring, predictable and cliched.
Not trying to offend your object of adoration here, just being honest.
Anyway, i'm willing to be persuaded otherwise. Am i missing something? Something that will make me see him in a new light? Do i have to be female to get it maybe? I really wanna know because he seems really popular, at least judging from the number of posts and views on this thread.
Well personally, I like him because he's not what I expected. When I saw 'elf with a tragic past' I expected a soft-spoken Legolas with some Edward Cullen thrown in. I thought his backstory was a Wolverine rip-off and he'd run purely on 'cool points', all flash and no substance. I thought I had him figured out.
When I actually played the game, I was pleasantly surprised to find I'd completely forgotten about all of those preconcieved notions I'd conjured up. I let myself be open-minded and I found him incredibly entertaining. I liked that he was (IMO) fairly masculine in spite of being an elf, yet for all of the 'animal' comparisons I thought he steered away from that brutish quality he easily could have taken on given his background. Instead he managed to express himself eloquently and seemed fairly cordial.
I like the fact that he's honest, he'll tell you what he thinks and doesn't usually bother with pointless small talk or niceties. That honesty is a double-edged sword, it may make him seem rude or callous at times but at others it shows his maturity, because he's honest with himself, he doesn't let his pride keep him from admitting his mistakes and he is very open about discussing his issues (which some who dislike him consider a minus... but I don't).
Also for his complicated and outlandish backstory, he felt very realistic to me. I thought he expressed himself like someone in those situations
would and I never felt he was saying anything simply 'because it sounds cool'.
I think it boils down to the fact that he doesn't take any particular characteristic to the extreme. His character may employ several stereotypes (the living weapon, the broody love interest, the amnesiac, the super powers), but I think he manages to pull them off with moderation. I never felt like he was beating me over the head with anything or screamed 'THIS IS MY DEFINING TRAIT!'
I really don't know that I can explain it in a concise way, he just
clicks for me. It's a bunch of little things that knit together without overpowering or contradicting each other to create the whole.
As for me, I just don't understand people that don't like him. But considering their reasons primarily seem to be 'he hates mages' and 'he looks too anime', I don't think they're really digging deep enough. I applaud you for at least attempting to understand, even if you still end up not liking him.
