I didn't kill him or make him leave on my first and only playthrough so far, but I'm not gonna lie, it was only because I really needed his healing abilities for the next part of the game.
Ahem. Fenris is my favorite.

As for dinner with Fenris: something Italian. And I mean classically Italian, like ancient Rome. Breads dipped in olive oil, fruits and nuts like figs and almonds, some baked fish perhaps but maybe rabbit, definitely red wine, and some kind of honeyed cake for desert.
See, though, I'm not so sure of that. He says, "Fish, fish, and, ugh, more fish," when you go into that fish guttery. Have you ever been to a fish guttery? I adore fish, all fish, love the stuff, will eat it like there's no tomorrow. But I visited a fish guttery at one time and it absolutely REEKED. It was perhaps the worst smell of any physical location I've ever visited, with fish guts and blood and heads and scales everywhere. I almost puked, it was so bad. But I still love eating fish, lol. Whether Fenris would really hate eating fish and smelling fish are, to me, two seperate questions, then.

I believe someone once said they had Fenris take a Stamina Potion and he said it tasted like fish, and he wasn't too happy about it. Although I could be imagining that, or it happened way too many damn pages ago for me to dare to even go back.

It's possible. Honestly, I love fish so much, it just boggles my mind when someone else doesn't,

Weekly Prompt: Crossover/DAO
The words echoed in Nathaniel’s head. “A mother****ing brood-off.” He should not have reacted as he had to the elf, but he was honestly getting tired of hearing over and over again: Oh that Fenris, he’s so hot right now.
Nathaniel Howe had been brooding for so many more years than that upstart. He had something to prove and prove it he would, on the runway of the glum. He would see that elf’s dark and twisted background with an equally depressing one of this own.
The men prepared to each in turn that their walk down the runway, a myriad of onlookers peering at them with expectant eyes. Nathaniel stretched, muscled arms rising above his head, shoulders rolling back, eyebrows furrowing. Fenris pumped his arm, swinging it about in the air as if throwing some phantom item at a wall.
They were ready, but there was only one problem… “Who is going to judge this thing?” Nathaniel had to admit Fenris’ voice had a lush quality to it, a deep timbre that was enough to melt the smallclothes off any nearby women or men, even himself. Time had not been as kind to his voice, something gravely overtaking his tone, adding a roughened and hoarse edge to his speech that had not been there during his prime.
From the thick of the crowd, blue eyes blazing steely, Loghain stepped forth, apparently visiting Kirkwall on very important Loghain business. “I will.”
Loghain approached the two men, a hand placed upon each of their shoulders. “This will be a straight brood-off. Old school rules. First brooder walks. Second brooder duplicates then elaborates.” He fisted a hand and pumped at the air. “Alright men. Let’s go to work.” He snorted derisively. “Brood.”
Fenris looked down the line of nose at Nathaniel, moss green eyes narrowing. “Age before broody.”
The game was on.
Nathaniel walked to the far end of the runway, his back to the spectators. All his feelings, all the power of his brood was concentrated within a single stare as he turned around. Grey eyes smoldered anger-fire as he stalked down the runway.
Fenris followed. Shoulders slumped forward, his walk a bit lower to the ground but not lacking for intensity. Bare feet padded against the runway in a commanding manner, biding all to look in his direction just in time to catch an inferno of green lighting with fury within his eyes. A hand rose to empty air, cupping at something was not there. And with a faint tilt of the head, his fingers brushed against phantoms. A mix of emotions coalesced, anger fading into something intoxicatingly pants melting. He held that pose for a moment, before allowing his hand to drop at his side and a smug look to spring into action as he peered back at Nathaniel.
A scowl spread along the lines of Nathaniel’s mouth at the display. He channeled all his antipathy into his moves. Every item in his arsenal was put to use: the slant of his expressive eyebrows, the manner in which his mouth could twist into the most sultry of snarls, the prominence of his father’s nose upon his face. But nothing seemed to phase the phaseshifting Fenris. Each maneuver was met with something just a hair more intense, just a touch more tormented.
And then Fenris went in for the kill, a final move that Nathaniel did not know how to top.
The elf lit bright blue, markings upon his skin illuminated in a moment of great fury. Hands shot out, grabbing at empty air once again as if someone stood before him, their arms within Fenris’ grasp. A low growl grew within the back of his throat as he pushed toward a wall and proceeded to pump his hips into it. The crowd erupted in gasp peppered applause.
Nathaniel’s head hung low. There was no way for him to match such a performance. No one had ever bothered to make him a love interest.
Loghain left his position at the end of the runway and walked toward Nathaniel and slapped the ground at his feet. "Disqualified!"
Self-satisfaction twitched at the corners of Fenris' mouth. "Better luck next game."

Awesome.
You know, I have to admit I really couldn't see any appeal in Nathaniel during Awakenings. Well, except for his voice maybe. He had an awesome voice and I really loved having my Warden talk to him. But looking at him was just...ewww. I always always modded Nathaniel. So when I got the quest to find him in DA2, I actually thought, I kid you not, "Oh no, I have to go look for yet another ugly NPC from the original game." By then, anyway, I was a bit put out that Zevran and Alistair had been so ruined by the game, in looks anyway.
Then I found Nathaniel and I was blown away. I thought, "Whoah, they finally managed to get someone from DAO to look BETTER, woot!" So yea, now I'm totally rooting for Nathaniel to find a LI in DA3. He deserves someone special. Not my Warden and not my Hawke, obviously. They're both sooo taken. But someone all new and all his own. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

To get in back on the discussion I missed... XD
If Hawke died, Fenris would probably brood for months, along with a silent tear now and then. But I think endgame Fenris would have moved on eventually - he's learned the value of freedom and how to live it by now, I think eventually he would have convinced himself to cherish the memories but not waste everything Hawke has helped him achieve for himself. He'd probably leave Kirkwall and the others (too many memories) and go to a whole new different place to start a completely new life - maybe to Ferelden.
Concerning Hawke losing Fenris... In my head I have this over-dramatised scenario in which Fenris is given the ultimatum of surrendering to Danarius or watching Hawke die, and having Hawke try to find and rescue him afterwards. (What? Of course he'd take his chances rather than betray Hawke! She's the epitome of what makes freedom worth having to him. He wouldn't let her die to keep freedom that would be meaningless if purchased at such a cost.) I think she'd be absolutely batty - pacing, sleepless nights, harassing Aveline to have the guard drop everything and look for the slavers, anger and suspicion at Anders for obviously not being too shaken up over it, working herself to death and horrible, horrible self-blame. Not being able to find them would probably be worse than seeing Fenris die, because it would require her to just go and admit at a certain point that there's no hope anymore, that he's surely out of her grasp by now, and that going to Tevinter to look for him would be suicide even though it's technically possible, and giving up like that would probably be a hell lot more painful. I'll see if I can write something like this without contrived drama. XD
Regarding Varania: I feel sorry for her, I really do. But as much as she's a victim, IMO she is also simply one of those people who are weak of personality. If she just wanted to live quietly and peacefully, it can't be that hard for an elf mage without a master chasing them to get out of the Imperium for starters. She didn't just want freedom, she wanted power, to be like the people that abused her, to be the one in charge for a change. It's understandable how a mentality like that would develop under her circumstances - abuse victims ones often become abusers, and all that - but she must face the consequences of pursuing power at the cost of others, namely the anger of those others. Whether she was naive to believe Danarius or not, she still believed she would become a Magister, complete with blood sacrifices and evil scheming and all. In fact, if she's been meaning to become one for a long time, I can easily imagine wanting to keep her from having to do that to be one of Leto's reasons for trying to free her.
I actually kind of think the elf racism thing would be less extreme in Tevinter, by the way. Doubtless the elf slaves and servants would be treated worse than humans, but if an elf managed to get ahead as a mage, a Magister, I don't think anyone would focus on them being an elf as much as on them being a Magister, and capable of squeezing the blood out of your body.
In that context, I have a fic to recommend. While it doesn't have Fenris, it does take a very extensive look at the Tevinter Imperium. The premise: Zevran and Shianni go to Tevinter to rescue the elves who were enslaved during Loghain's rule, including her uncle as well as non-Warden Tabris.

However, it's the second part of a series (and naturally contains spoilers for it). I would really recommend reading the first part, uh, first. ^^

Well said
Varania is weak indeed, and I do see her as someone who'd become an abuser herself. So much bitterness, so much resentment

@Yellow Words: I know right! Poor Nathaniel. Daddy issues and he gets no in game nooky. But at least he gets to sort of pretend he's batman in DA2

He really should put up a show for his close friends once he get all the routines down to perfection.

Prompt: Mass Effect
Jack: So, you use the sword?
Fenris: Yes.
Jack: I like the shotgun myself. *laughs* But I suppose swords can be useful.
Merrill: Oh, you both have puppy eyes! *Jack and Fenris turn on her and reach for they're weapons. Merrill runs*
Shepard: Think we should stop them?
Hawke: No, I think she's right. They both have wonderful eyes.
Shepard: True. But...I wonder what would happen if Garrus met Fenris.
Hawke: Or if Isabela met Jack. *both pause and look at eachother, grinning*

The Hanged Man
Jack: Nice ink.
Fenris: My markings are not tattoos, they were carved into my flesh while molten lyrium was poured in.
Jack: (low whistle) Sounds hardcore. Heard about this group of pirates out near the Skyllian Verge doing the same thing with eezo, died of brain cancer. ****ing morons.
Fenris: I have never heard of the Skyllian Verge.
Jack: Well that's because I'm not from what you'd consider 'around here' stringbean.
Fenris: Where are you from?
Jack: (rolls eyes) Boss man says I can't say 'Prime directive' 'not messing with primitive cultures' or some such ****.
(a bounty hunter walks up to Fenris)
Bounty Hunter: You! Slave! I hear there's a lot of money on your (Fenris phase-punches through the hunter's chest)
Fenris: I am not a slave!
Jack: I hear you stringbean. I get that all the time. Neat fisting trick you got there. Didn't expect to see biotics from you primitive screwheads.
Fenris: Biotics?
Jack: (lights up like a Christmas Tree) See, I glow too. (biotically throws tankard across the room)
Fenris: You are a mage!
Jack: (rolls eyes) And here I thought we left the whole 'Holy **** she's a witch' thing back on that last backwater we stopped at. Chill out stringbean I'm not gonna drink your blood or turn you inside-out with my brain or anything like that. I'm not that ticked.
Fenris: Why can I never meet someone normal?
Jack: ****. You sound like the Commander.

Anyway, a little bit of fluff that got into my head about how the end of Best Served Cold (Fen as hostage, naturally) might've gone, with more actual dialogue and stuff....
Hawke: He's not tied up. What have you done to him?
Alain: He has been bound with blood magic. I am sorry, I will have to use-
Hawke: You bound him with blood magic??!
Varric: (facepalm, mutter) You just have to keep proving him right, don't you?
Alain: I... Y-yes, I am sorry, we had to keep him from moving, he-
Hawke: What will it take to wake him? Tell me, mage!
Alain: Blood magic! I will have to use blood magic to release him.
Hawke: You bastards! What if I'd killed you before you got around to mentioning that?!
Alain: W-we didn't really plan for you to, uh...
Hawke: You think I'd trust one of you to lay your hands on him again?! Tell me there is another way!
Varric: There's always the kiss.
Hawke: ...What?
Varric: You know... sleeping beauty all still and sleeping-like, true love bending over for a passionate kiss, the eyes flutter open-
Hawke: Keep your damn stories in the inn, Varric! This is serious!
Varric: So am I! Every myth has its roots in reality, and I'll bet you this one's especially so. Falling asleep for a hundred years - a regular sleep spell won't do that to you! The old queen must have been a blood mage, or I'm a nug's son.
Merrill: I've never heard that story. You shem are so romantic!
Varric: I'll tell you the whole thing later, Daisy, but first we still need to wake this princess here without him punching the heart out of the first person he sees. So how about it? Up for it, Hawke?
Hawke: (groan) I can't believe you seriously think a kiss would actually work against blood magic-
Varric: Fine, fine. Rinse your mouth with a crateful of fish first just to be on the safe side, then.
Hawke: Ugh! Then he'll just kill me, and I'll probably thank him for it.
Merrill: I'd be happy to do it!
Hawke: ...
Merrill: (blush) Um, not the kissing! I trust Varric, of course, but I actually meant the blood magic. Me. You trust me, right? Um, at least I assume you do... or hope so. I could use blood magic to free Fenris if you don't want the one with the funny hat to do it, then you or I wouldn't have to kiss him - I mean, I didn't suggest I kiss him, it was just a silly mistake, and I don't mean to say there's anything wrong with kissing him - but that's probably best left to you, isn't it, especially since you always look so cute when you do it - not that I watch you kissing or anything. Hehe, um, I'm not saying I mind watching you and oh Creators this is coming out all wrong, I just know you consider it impolite and we Dalish aren't that much different, I'm really so sorry I'm rambling aren't I this is, uh, serious, so I guess I'll just get to it, hehe... to the blood magic, of course, not the kissing...
Varric: Daisy...
Alain: ..You're a blood mage?
Hawke: (to Alain) ...Just get this over with.
Varric: And then Alain bent to kiss him, his magely stubble rubbing softly against the elf's tattoos, and his eyes fluttered open like butterflies in the first rays of dawn, and when he punched the blood out of him it created the most lovely red arc sizzling through the air to drip on awed faces...
