The Official Fenris Discussion thread

What really hooked me on his character was the very first conversation you have with him back in his mansion. I always got the impression that almost all of the other characters in the game latched onto Hawke because they truly needed something from him/her. Most conversations usually involve some kind of favor, or emotional leaning, or search for validation. I think Aveline might be the other exception. But Fenris actually engages Hawke in a conversation and shares his thoughts on what it means to have a home. He asks for Hawke's thoughts and feelings, and seems to actually listen without an agenda. It was a complete change from most of the Act 1 social calls.
I'm also a major sucker for his gruff, dark and dry sense of humor. I wish I could remember the random banter that had me giggling to death in the first act during my first playthrough, but I sat in front of the monitor, half-collapsed and gasping for a couple of minutes. Most of that was because it was so unexpected after Varric's extremely un-subtle "humor."
He also has one of the most interesting evolutions I've seen of all the characters. He opens up, appreciates others, and finally accepts himself as a complete, free being. He was my ManHawke's closest buddy. He's also my sort-of permanent love interest with all my FemHawkes. Love isn't what changes Fenris. Fenris changes Fenris through his own experiences and with the support of all of Hawke's little circle.

Really? I hated Kaidan. I thought he was more whiney than even Fenris. I can tolerate Fenris, but Kaidan? Damn I just hate the guy.
I don't want to have to defend Kaidan and Fenris in one thread so I'll just stick with Fenris for now. Generally I do not like people who brood, complain, and whine UNLESS they have a reason for it. For instance, Anders annoys me because I never really get the sense that he had all that much pain in his background. In fact a lot of the time he seems to bring the problems on himself (the constant escaping, the fighting of the templars at every turn). I guess if he gave me more examples of why he was so oppressed I'd understand better, but I never really got a sense that it was really as bad as he made it out to be.
While I got that the minute I met Fenris. He's covered with lyrium markings, has zero memories outside of mages torturing and humiliating him, and he's on the run from a bunch of mages trying to make him a slave again. It makes perfect sense that he'd be a little depressed after that but it doesn't last. Towards the end, if you get to know him, he will lighten up. Some examples of companion dialogue from Act 3:
Fenris: I was speaking with Donnic the other day...
Aveline: Since when do you talk with my husband?
Fenris: He... comes to the mansion once a week? We play diamondback.
Aveline: What? Why am I not invited to these games?
Fenris: He says you get angry when you lose.
Aveline: I do not! All right, perhaps I do. Still, that's no reason not to tell me.
Fenris: He's a good man, Aveline. I enjoy his visits.
Aveline: Fine, fine. Have your "man time," then.
Varric: You know you still owe me five sovereigns, elf.
Fenris: I'm good for it.
Varric: Meaning you'll borrow it from Hawke, probably.
Varric: Coming to the Hanged Man for Wicked Grace later?
Fenris: Never miss it.
And refuses to turn in mages in the party because he is loyal to Hawke:
Sebastian: It's our duty to tell the templars.
Fenris: Then why haven't you done it?
Sebastian: I guess I was hoping they'd come to it on their own.
Fenris: And then you wouldn't have to betray Hawke's friends, right?
Sebastian: That's not reason enough to allow a maleficar to walk free.
Sebastian: Which of us should do it? Shall we draw lots?
Fenris: Uh-uh. You want to turn them in, you work it out with Hawke.
The point is, he only had bad experiences with mages before and that tainted his view, but once he meets a different world, particularly if Hawke is a mage, he isn't as broody, anti mage, and angry all the time. To the point that even if you are at decent enough friendship with him or full rivalry, he will support the mages with you. He'll never completely change his views because of what he's seen, but he will become more understanding and tolerant of mages with help from Hawke.
Anders...he had his reasonings but it just wasn't enough. It really wasn't. In the end...he was the very thing that gave him the problems he got and he was the example that Meredith pointing out. He wanted to help, but he became the very thing he hated more than anything else. He was so far into it he couldn't pull himself out.
And really...I hate to admit it but in the end Fenris was right...

^Agreed 100%. He really does develop throughout. He has a lot of depth.
....Static characters bore me. His evolution is really refreshing.

All his dialogue/banter is in here in case you want to look: http://dragonage.wik...nris's_Dialogue
I personally loved the beard dialogue with Varric where he says "I thought it might've fallen into your chest."

I think it was this one:
- Varric: So where's your beard, elf?
- Fenris: Elves don't grow beards.
- Varric: Huh. I thought maybe you'd shaved it off in a fit of broody pique.
- Fenris: So you're a funny dwarf.

Well stated! All of this, especially the bolded part!
I remember being so excited because I felt like he and Hawke were engaged in an actual discussion, a shared dialogue. It was more about the kind of dialogue friends would have with each other and less "what can you do for me" or here let me tell you my back story.

^Yeah.... even as a mage, I couldn't help but think, "Crap... I should've listened to Fenris. Crap."
By the end of the game I was really frustrated with my fellow mages, and really the only reason that I still sided with them was because I didn't think slaughtering the entire Circle was justifiable. It felt like overkill. I mean, leading up to an ultimatum like that how could Meredith honestly wonder why so many of them were going off the deep end? Not like Orsino helped by going all bat**** himself.
My Hawke originally wanted to find compromise, because really I thought both sides made valid points. But obviously Anders decided to go nuts and ruin that idea. Thanks, Anders, I THOUGHT WE WERE FRIENDS. <_<

Okay.. I can understand King Alistair giving Queen Cousland a peck on the cheek.... Cause that can be a marriage of convenience, not of love.
But King's Mistress Warden gets a peck on the cheek too??

right? ugh...and my first PT I romanced him because he was a returning character so I had to save Fenris for later. And towards the end i didn't feel one man's action should become the reason to annihilate a big group of people but I really...wanted to hurt Anders. I really did...I wish there was a stab option that doesn't kill him.
but really..Fenris, he might be broody but he tells you like it is. He has his own ideas about mages and people in general, and it's up to you to change his mind about you as a person

Fenris: I thought all dwarves had beards. Where's yours?
Varric: I misplaced it, along with my sense of dwarven pride and my gold-plated noble caste pin.
Fenris: I thought maybe it fell onto your chest.
Varric: Oh-ho! The broody elf tells a joke!
Fenris: I don't brood.
Varric: Friend, if your brooding were any more impressive, women would swoon as you passed. They'd have broody babies in your honor.
Fenris: You're a very odd dwarf.
Varric: And you thought I was joking about the pin.
I'm normally in fits after this convo...
