So I think it is both reductive and dismissive (and a little presumptuous and condescending, to be honest) to say that the people are posting anything positive in this thread are only doing so "because he's pretty."

The funny part - at least to me - is that maybe 1/20th of the posts during this discussion even mentioned this, and half of those were either joking or being very careful about it.

To quote Fenris, "That's...something."

I mean, we have Anders - the guy driven to terrorism by his obsession - and we learn practically nothing of why his life sucks, specifically, to make him this way.

This point illustrates one of the reasons I found myself drawn to Fenris as a character.  I came into DA2 with hopes of learning certain things about returning characters.  I wanted to hear why Anders felt it necessary to escape from the circle or hear more about his escapes.  I wanted to know about Isabela's (ex)husband and more about her time as a ship captain (other than knife fights and sex).  I had no expectations about other characters, but when I got into the game, I didn't feel like I got enough of a backstory on the other characters (returning or not) with the exception of Fenris and Varric (and maybe Aveline even though it took me six playthroughs to figure her out well enough to get a questioning beliefs conversation from her, which is probably why she is one of my least favorite characters).  Fenris was compelling to me because I felt like Hawke got to know him.  I felt like in game I experienced conversations that mattered about who he was and how he related to Hawke.  I didn't feel like I got that from most of the other characters.  Now this is just my subjective "feelings" on the characters, so I don't know how useful it is to anyone else.

Also I like it when conversations take me out of lurk mode.  :)

True.  I hadn't realized it til I read this, but we never did learn anything about Anders' family or his escapes, nor about Isabela's husband and Zevran killing him.  Before the game came out I had assumed we would.

Also, every time I see Fenris chibi, I want to purge it with images of Fenris phase gutting people.

All Hawkes "have blinders on," that's part of the roleplaying isn't it? Who wants to play an omniscient omnipotent protagonist? Okay I suppose some people do.

To this particular character, Fenris was a dangerous living weapon who hated mages, and Anders was a dangerous abomination who hated Templars. In Kirkwall, leaving either of those two alone seemed like an incredibly bad idea to him. Merrill, by contrast seemed to be doing something dumb and dangerous, but he didn't know enough about the Eluvian to say how dangerous it was, and Merrill/the Keeper never told him enough about what actually happened before they met for him to make an informed decision about how messed up that whole scenario ended up being.

Fenris and Anders did Hawke the courtesy of wearing their existence as liabilities - to this particular Hawke - on their sleeve.

Granted, I'm not entirely sure how ontopic a discussion of my Hawke is.

Fenris had said weapons but never used them against people who didn't directly threaten him, or unless Hawke asked him to with his personal consent.  By Act 2, it's pretty darned obvious that Fenris is only lethal to those who seek to enslave him.  He's vehement, yes, but he's vehement about supporting the status quo on Thedas using existing respected methods and institutions.  His arguments might strike one as being unconventional--  he doesn't use Chantry dogma to justify his choices, rather his personal experience-- but he supports what one might suspect your average citizen of any of the Chantry-controlled countries of Thedas would.  He's actually pretty moderate amongst all of the various revolutionaries and misfits that Hawke attracts.

Contrast: Anders, by mid-Act 2 has already lost control and threatened an innocent. Fenris has killed... slavers... who were trying to kill him.  And talked a lot.  Merrill's acts have already sent one of her clan-mates to his death.

If there's anything more awesome than Fenris fisting himself, I don't want to know what it is.

Going into DA2 for the first time, I had a pre-concieved image of Fenris' personality (I wrote a ton of stuff with what Ser Gaider gave us as pre-release hints) Once I got Fenris in my party and heard some of his dialog I found myself liking him for how he presents his ideas.

Unlike other charaters in Dragon Age (e.g. Morrigan) Fenris will disagree with you for a reason other than disagreeing for disagreement's sake. For instance letting Grace and the Starkhaven apostates go free is dangerous because we've seen them raise the frickin' dead. Its understandable that  he considers this to be a bad idea. We only ever see Fenris lose his self control when he gets angry, and that kind of anger is usually directed at those who have harmed him or someone he cares about. Fenris is sort of like a Bruce Banner character in that regard, he's a nice guy, but you won't like him when he's angry.
