I was going to go into one of those point-by-point explanations - that was on pace to be much longer than this post - of why I wanted this discussion and what the whole point was but it seems, catching up on the thread, that other posters already accomplished much of that for me. There's really only a couple things to mention.
I
do kick over sandcastles as a sort of "introduction" to a thread, it's a habit - for better or worse - to get attention focused on a new discussion especially when it's very different than the current one. Trolls
do do it, and I where I attempt to draw a distinction is sticking around and elaborating instead of watching the carnage ensue and loling from my chair. Also, when I do
start into conversations that end up lasting 20+ pages or whatever, there usually is a trigger that does simply annoy me on a basic and ultimately selfish level - such as "more shirtless Fenris!" when I obviously feel there's much more substantial things that needed work. Some people got that, and for others it left a bad taste in their mouth - I understand, and it wouldn't be the first time or the last.
In terms of theories being compromised, plenty of them did, sure - but not the core - which is that "I don't think Fenris had a significant role to play in the story and I wish he did." I adopted several theories during the discussion, some my own, some came from others, and no - most of them did not work. I don't see how that's a contradiction.
And the point about there being a thread for negativity and a thread for positivity, I don't buy that some five page thread venting about how much people "hate" Fenris is an appropriate substitute - I just wish he was more integrated , which is not hate - or would produce any kind of discussion like the one we had. The Official (Character) Discussion threads are and will always be for any discussions regarding the character, be they squee or criticism.
That being said, the conversation did end up going in circles and there's nothing inherently wrong with that. I got some answers, not enough
for me as someone pointed out only David Gaider could
really answer them, and we had some good discussion. That I wasn't converted and I didn't convert anyone doesn't really matter to me.
Not much more to say really - it was interesting, and if someone's got something they want to say back on the topic I'd keep it going, but like many have said, I don't see it going too much farther than it already has. Although... I'm starting to build up the desire to get into a long, "Fenris absolutely hates mages" discussion but I need a break first.
