Yes, pretty much. But not quite I'm RIGHT and you're WRONG. It was more of the implication that if Fenris had no ties to the main plotline, he was somehow diminished in Short's eyes. I'm probably projecting, but that's the vibe I got.

I can understand that :) It might be that he WAS, because Short was hoping us hopeless love slaevs of fen could shead some light, and none of us can ^_^

The love of Fenris, it flows from places unknown. <3

Indeed. Some characters just click, others don't. What I liked about the DA2 companions is that they seemed like real people, faults and all. There were times I wanted to smack Fenris, but as with RL friends, you suffer their flaws and focus on their strengths. It was refreshing to see three-dimensional characterization for once in a video game.

Fenris is a favorite of mine but I still wish he had been more tied to the main plot in some way. For me it felt like he got the short stick and it made him a harder character to figure out - in position to the story and Hawke's life. (If that makes any sense at all.) It feels like everyone else has clear roles to play might be a better way of putting it.

Yep...  I absolutely adore Fenris.  He was fangirl kryptonite for me.  But that said, I do wish he was more integral to the plot.  The 'hook' there was missing for me and that made me a bit sad.

I've also made a comment to some others that with as long as the time period is in DA2 and as much as we do interact with the companions (and specifically Fenris), we actually do not know that much about them.  There is a lot left up to the player's speculation.

Those huge time gaps between acts, the little things hinted at via companion banter, etc. all leave a lot of room for guessing.   Some folks like that sort of thing (I do, for example) and others want things more concrete and laid out so that they can fully understand the intent of the writers and just what is supposed to be going on with those characters.

We also have to remember that Varric might not have been Privy to all the in between details ;p He IS telling the story, and the story-listener isn't really intrested in "Hawke went shopping for furnature with her mother. She visited fenris nightly for brood-offs and drinking contests. They're totally still sleeping together even though he walked out on her that one time three years ago" etc etc ;p

ME!! That's me! Though after all the mage discussion yesterday, mine went to do Act 2 Questioning Beliefs and he toasted her with "to you Hawke, finest mage I've ever known" ...I melted. Then realized she's with Anders, romantic juggernaut.

If there's any karma in Thedas then Danarius just rots in the existential prison he's made for himself.  Not quite as impressive end as being b*tch slapped by Fenris, but he didn't earn such a glorious death anyway.

Danarius - and by extension Fenris - would have been more interesting as a story to me had Danarius not been a Snidely Whiplash cartoon villain.

I'm really not sure how that would have worked or even if it could - "graying up" slavery and indeed involuntary body modification to boot - but like pseudocognition pointed out earlier, Dragon Age is full of gray-and-gray morality... Danarius being just so thoroughly evil seemed out of place.

I can agree with that.  I thought there would be more to Danarius than we got.

You're welcome--this thread certainly is fun.Posted Image

It certainly was about 20 pages back. It is not anymore.

This thread was my "happy place" far away from venomous cat fights in other general thread discussions. Not saying it is as bad here cuz obviously everyone stays on cicilized level, but it's still quite annoying. We are all different and see Fenris in our on way. I have nothing against the exchange of varrying opinions but what went on here for some time was not it.

Upsettingshorts...you came here to blow off your frustration or irritation or whatever might have you making Fenris a target. Arguing just for arguments sake. No matter how many of your theories got compromized here, you just went on adding new ones or getting entangled back in old ones. What started as an interesting discussion, turned into walking in circles around a subject that people will never agree on because we are all different and we see things differently.
You said at the start that if there was a thread that dislikes Fenris you would post it there but there wasn't one so you came here instead. Well, hate to break it to you but there is one. Here, I dug it up for you. Why don't you go and share your "love" out there...

Here's the link: http://social.biowar...index/6640187/1

It's been a good discussion, and different people come to this thread for different reasons.  I've avoided it for a while because it was nothing but fangirlism- which is fine, don't get me wrong- but I like serious character debate better.

I too thought that the confrontation with Danarius would be larger.  Not just one battle, in which we really didn't learn much about Fenris's past or Tevinter.  But that may come in DLC or an expansion.  For me that part of Fenris's story was a bit of a let down.

Yup. I said it more than once, the whole 'wha we got are just speculation/assumption/unconfirmed ideas, only DG/Bioware writers can validate them' but I think everytime I said that it usually gets buried under other stuff

I was going to go into one of those point-by-point explanations - that was on pace to be much longer than this post - of why I wanted this discussion and what the whole point was but it seems, catching up on the thread, that other posters already accomplished much of that for me.  There's really only a couple things to mention.

I do kick over sandcastles as a sort of "introduction" to a thread, it's a habit - for better or worse - to get attention focused on a new discussion especially when it's very different than the current one.  Trolls do do it, and I where I attempt to draw a distinction is sticking around and elaborating instead of watching the carnage ensue and loling from my chair.  Also, when I do start into conversations that end up lasting 20+ pages or whatever, there usually is a trigger that does simply annoy me on a basic and ultimately selfish level - such as "more shirtless Fenris!" when I obviously feel there's much more substantial things that needed work.    Some people got that, and for others it left a bad taste in their mouth - I understand, and it wouldn't be the first time or the last.

In terms of theories being compromised, plenty of them did, sure - but not the core - which is that "I don't think Fenris had a significant role to play in the story and I wish he did."  I  adopted several theories during the discussion, some my own, some came from others, and no - most of them did not work.  I don't see how that's a contradiction.

And the point about there being a thread for negativity and a thread for positivity, I don't buy that some five page thread venting about how much people "hate" Fenris is an appropriate substitute - I just wish he was more integrated , which is not hate - or would produce any kind of discussion like the one we had.  The Official (Character) Discussion threads are and will always be for any discussions regarding the character, be they squee or criticism.

That being said, the conversation did end up going in circles and there's nothing inherently wrong with that.  I got some answers, not enough for me as someone pointed out only David Gaider could really answer them, and we had some good discussion.  That I wasn't converted and I didn't convert anyone doesn't really matter to me.

Not much more to say really - it was interesting, and if someone's got something they want to say back on the topic I'd keep it going, but like many have said, I don't see it going too much farther than it already has.  Although... I'm starting to build up the desire to get into a long, "Fenris absolutely hates mages" discussion but I need a break first.

I have enjoyed the discussion. It's interesting to see how people view Fenris (or any of the companions) and how we see his impact on the story. We may not agree, but that's part of how the game appeals to each one of us individually.

I dont mind debates on merits of characters etc but Ihave to say at the end of reading all the same sort of questions it felt a bit like why is the grass green, or a ball round>? kinda infinite... that being said its all good in its own way, so carry on if thats what rocks your socks!

People should have serious discussions on here more often. They're lovely. Even though I don't get involved... they're fun to watch. Posted Image And some wonderful points and theories are brought up. Posted Image

Just wanted to add my voice to those who've appreciated the discussion. I'd love to see discussions like this continue here (not saying to the complete exclusion of squee or silliness, but there can be a definite balance).

Prompt time

Trap:

Warehouse, Kirkwall Docks

Varric: Hold on a minute trap ahead.

Fenris: Dwarf, this is a warehouse full of cabbage. Who would rig it with traps?

Varric: I don't know, enraged cabbage farmers?

Hawke: Fenris does have a point, there's no way that this place could have- (steps on a pressure plate that causes spears to fly up out of the ground) traps. (spinning saw blades pop out of the ground, blocking the entrance)

Fenris: You were right dwarf.

Varric: Aren't I always?

Fenris: Don't push your luck.

Seriously, three out of four warehouses in Kirkwall have elaborate death traps installed in them. Does no one actually store things in them?

LOL! AT one point, when you are walking around The Docks, Fenris even says something like "These warehouses are used to store things, not just for clandestine meetings". Cracks me up every time.

I've been thinking about that actually.  Apparently they don't. ^^; Also, where do all people in Lowtown and Darktown actually live? On the streets? Or then the houses/apartments are just very well hidden. :P

Varric is wonderful. I'm really super unsure as to how anyone can dislike him, or his VO ;p He's never mean, only playful and snarky. He takes the time to check up on all of his friends! He continually expresses concern for Fenris's well being, pays off the Coterie to keep Anders out of harms way, makes darned sure Merrill isn't getting into trouble for being bumblingly adorable. He's drinking buddies with Isabela, co-conspiritor to Hawke. Hell, even Aveline likes him. And I mean likes, not just puts up with, like she does with Isabela in act 1 and Anders pretty much perpetually.
Up with Varric! :wizard:

Varric gives the best response, I think, when you're asking your companions for opinions on how to deal with Anders after the Chantry explosion.  He says something like, "I'm sick of all of these Mages and Templars."  classic Varric.  Love him completely.

Go to the Hanged Man (at Night) and in the small room across from where Martin has his little shop there is a woman. You get extra experience and money when you tell her you took out the gangs. ^_^

Yes! You have been missing out. There is a woman in one of the upstairs rooms at the Hanged Man (it's directly across from Martin's room -- the poison guy Isabella introduces you to). Whenever you eliminate one of those groups entirely, you can go visit her for some coin.

My favorite is when you're tracking down Alrik for Anders, and he asks who you are, Varric says "It's the Divine, come from Orlais to tell you personally what a jackass you are." or something along those lines. Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

I've had a warrior M!Hawke who romanced Isabela. My current playthrough (that I'm focusing on) is a rogue M!Hawke romancing Merrill, but when I play as my F!Hawke (who is always a mage) I canNOT ignore Fenris. I can't. He's there, and I love him  Poor Anders. I don't think I'll ever get to see his romance in its entirety. It's sad. BTW, I've had about four F!Hawke playthroughs already...I have a problem.
