I had a different reaction. I felt he was using Hawke's feelings to manipulate her. The relationship goes from first kiss to sexytime to him asking to move in in less than 24 hours. A guy saying, "I love you baby. For years I have loved you!" and then, as soon as Hawke says they love him, you get him, "Oooh, baby, btw, I kinda need a new place to stay. Can I move in with you?" And your choice is let him move in, or break up.
I seriously felt used and manipulated. He was great when it came to comforting Hawke, though, but then act 3 came and the manipulation was far, far worse.
Just ick.
Well said. My initial PT, I started with a flirt with Anders and got the "I'll only hurt you in the end" line, and it was so pitiable. I friended him that PT, the only time I ever have since I've rivaled him ever since, and I swear it felt like my Hawke was being yanked around at every turn. And that was just being friends with him. I've tried romancing him in several PT since then and I just can't bring myself to complete it. I always feel like Hawke is nothing to Anders but a tool, a pitiful and sad tool, and it's a nasty feeling, totally turns me off.
It's why I generally stick with romancing the elf. With Fenris, I feel Hawke is precious, in and of herself, independent of what she does for him. It's not that she isn't doing for him, either. But it's a sense he's not so much dependent on Hawke as Anders is. For Fenris, Hawke is a
real friend and then a lover, she's cherished for WHO she is even more than for WHAT she gives him.
