I told my husband with a shocked voice, "He just grabbed her!"  That's what it felt like to me, like Anders only saw something he wanted, something to have, something to take and use.  The key word being "something".  I have never gotten the real sense that Anders actually cared about Hawke, anyway.  More like Hawke was, to him, an object or thing to be had and enjoyed and used.  I don't know, maybe it's just me, I just can't help feeling that way, when you have Anders constantly going on and on about manifestos and causes and revolutions; Hawke just seems so secondary and minimal in his considerations, until there's nothing there but manipulation and coercion.  It's not love, it's using.

I can see Fenris quite easily dying for Hawke, no questions asked, if need be; Anders would stop long enough to ask how many mages the sacrifice would save, first.

Anders is setup for a male character not a female in this game. (In my opinion)

With a female character it’s all I’ll hurt you, I’ll break your heart, I’ll hurt you, I’ll hurt you, this will be a disaster, I told you I would break your heart.

With a male character its conversation, conversation, more conversations and I told you I would break your heart.

Anders is much more open and happy with a male hawke. Perhaps the writers didn’t intend that but its how it came out. In awakenings he was all pretty girl, plump wife, nubile mistresses… I can’t say Justice changed him that much because from befriending Justice I got the impression he was smitten with Aura, Kristoff’s wife so he wasn’t anti-female.

As for Fenris, the people who haven’t tried turning him over to Danarius…don’t do it!
I watched a You tube video of someone who romanced him and turned him over. It was horrible. I couldn’t do that ever in-game…yes, what a great character David wrote, I knew he would be.

Fenris is awPosted Imagesome!

I don't like being his rival, so I prefer non-mage Hawke.  You can still be his friend as a mage, but it doesn't make as much sense to me.  Mage Hawke does get a few unique lines and dialogue choices.  If you like conflict you will probably want to play as a mage.  But, I prefer seeing him open up to Hawke as someone he trusts.

Mage hawke works well also too, (although im sad and play only opposite sex-romances) i was really surprised at the end when i sided with mages and he still stood by hawke. That was a major turn around for Fenris it showed me he had maybe finally got some peace in himself, which i liked very much. His view was distorted with good reason and he overcame it somewhat, there is strength in that. Both are pretty good :)

My favorite romance is the mage friendmance actually. It does make sense to me because as he says in the beginning "[he] isn't blind, magic has its uses." As he befriends you and you progress the romance it isn't so much that you have to be his rival or disagree all the time, but more that he respects you and trusts you/ comes to love you based on the amount of strength and willpower you posess. That the mage Hawke can control his/her mage powers and literally be the only one in the world Fenris has ever seen or even believed could in essence beat the odds of magic and control their powers. He remarks quite a few times that "not everyone is as strong as you are," and that "for every 100 mages there is maybe 1 like Hawke." The friendship is more out of mutual respect and he doesn't hate or fault you for being a mage, but more comes to love the mage that you are. It means a lot because it takes a lot for Fenris to make that leap of faith.

I was gone for almost a day and OO!! you guys made me laugh so much! the Part about Phyreblade and the others with the lap tops and conversation. My B/f throws fits that im reading that Fen stuff again. He is like jealous of a pixel game toon! teehee [ kinda funny, I really may paint lyrium stripes on him one day in his sleep!]
I luv the meg prompts , all of you write soo well! Ursala dont be shy you, are amazing too! As always the art makes me smile !
I really really got the giggles cuz the thing with the Anders romance is so my problem too, I cant get past those red flags/ junkie desperation attitude. I wanted to ; but I cant.
Welcome new peeps to thread, Smokeydabear and gnas, chugster, not sure if i seen you around on this thread { my memory fails me ! EGADS Not the mind wipe!!! }
I really liekd the friendmanship romance of Fenris too, he does seem more comfortable, and Im weird i guess, but I like that he leaps forward to kiss Hawke in the romance time, instead of turning his head away or what not. Both are sweet, but I still like the friend one better!

I'm trying to make some Canon runs at the moment.  Meaning, I plan on having a Mage, Rogue and Warrior canon, so three total PT that I can really see for sure and certain what, to me, is my absolute fave run.  My Mage Hawke is diplomatic, Rogue is snarky, and Warrior will be aggressive.  I'm currently finishing up my Rogue run-through.  And unless the Warrior just totally blows my mind, it's my Rogue who's gonna win the award for "all time fave" Canon.

My Mage Hawke just fell flat, in so many ways.  She makes sense, to me, in that Fenris has to grow in himself enough he can grow to love a mage.  To me, it's an awesome sort of progression and I do enjoy it.  But I just don't feel the character, like that isn't THE Hawke, just A Hawke.  I can't really explain it, weirdly.  It's more a feeling than something to articulate.

My Rogue, btw, is the one who got the kissy move from Anders.  Honestly, my Rogue Hawke would've totally ripped him a new one if he did that, but all the dialogue allowed me was some comment about how "there's nothing between us", argh.  How lame, dangit!

I enjoy both, but I prefer Fenris with a non-mage. My head canon is a rogue rivalmance (though it's not a really antagonistic rivalry, he and Fenris mostly just disagree about mages).

Although I can appreciate the delicious irony of Fenris falling for a mage, there's something about that dynamic that makes me a bit uncomfortable when I actually play through it.

My personal canon is my Mage!Hawke and Fenris, so yep, that's my preference. There is something about romancing him as a mage that is so appealing and I've been asking myself what it is since I've first played. I have little pet peeve are romances that start off with the two wanting to strangle each other. If it's done right, then I can be persuaded.

I like the idea of Fenris recognizing one mage that transcends his original conception of mages. Even if they butted heads a few times, they come to mutually respect each other. My Hawke was a goody-goody, who didn't care about power, detested blood magic, and eventually grew to see the logic in the necessity of the circles. His views of mages have been spoiled from his enslavement, so the thought of Fenris being able to see through his own prejudices and bitterness, to feel and fall in love with a mage... Call me cheesy, but I find it romantic. I also like the irony of it all. ;)

My personal favourite had always been mage. This intensified when I learned Fenris hate mages. My stubborn genes kicked in. Had to rival-romance him and turned him to help mages! Hehehe, it worked. Lovely, no?

EDIT:

New Prompt will be up in 5 hours time. New idea's welcome!

Prompt: Trap

“If you’re going to leave, just do it!”

She seized the book he’d been reading with her and let fly with it.  The cover flapped once or twice like a dying bird and the pages fanned out before it hit the wall and flopped to the ground.  The smack didn’t seem to satisfy her any; she gritted her teeth and clenched her fists until her knuckles whitened.

“I asked you what you thought, though it seems the book has paid the price for my curiosity.”  She didn’t bother to look at him, nor did she respond with the half-smile he expected.

“Forget it.”  She shrank away from him on the bench and stared into the flames.

The fire, though it could scarce be called such, sputtered and crackled as a chill breeze seeped through the cracks in the fireplace.  She’d never had such eyes for the fire, though she apparently still had eyes for him, no matter how he’d wrecked his chances two years before.  He gripped the bench’s edge as her hair fell over her cheek and hid even the tip of her nose.  He caught a hint of a deep breath, wetter than a sigh.

“Andra.”

“There’s no point in talking about it.  You don’t want to stay, so don’t.  Just leave.  Just go.  Isn’t that what you always do?”  There was no mistaking the hitching in her chest or the thickness in her voice.

“I’ve heard nothing from Danarius, Andra.  No hunters, no apprentices, not the faintest sign for years.  I can’t…”

“Then go hunt him and shut up about it!”

“You don’t understand.”

“No, you’re right, I don’t, and I never will.  I don’t understand why you can’t just live!  Why you can’t settle down and appreciate what you have.  Why you have to keep running away from everything.”  Unspoken was the accusation he heard loud and clear, though she never would say it outright.  Why you have to keep running away from me.

“I thought I was free, Andra, but Danarius sent Hadriana after me.  What happens when I’ve settled here too long?”

“And I thought that’s why you were sticking around, so you’d have help if it ever did happen again.  You know I’ll…”

“And if he strikes after I’ve ‘lived’ too long in complacency, as he already has?  What then?”

“I’m here.  And there’s a whole legion of lunatics looking out for you.”  She swallowed after choking the words out.

“And for how long, Andra?  No one waits forever.”

“However long you need me.  I can’t believe you’d even question that!”

She was on her feet in a flash, and when she whirled on him, the flames turned the rivers that ran down her cheeks to molten gold.  Molten enough to melt even the most shriveled, ashen heart.  He winced, but before he realized it, she warmed him as she once had two years ago.  Only once, though if he’d had the courage…   He found one hand gripping the small of her back, and the second entwined in silk as it cradled the back of her head.  Though his palms screamed as if licked by flame, his heart beat again as her breasts gave slightly against his chest.  He pulled himself closer until she rubbed every inch of him and set him ablaze.  Her breath sent shocks down his spine as she buried her head in the crook of his neck.  As he reveled in the silk that tickled his hand, she clutched at his waist with one supple arm, and slipped a finger along his ear.

She lets her fingers wander everywhere, in his hair, along his jaw.  She smiles as his lips pause against her cheek and traces the outline of his ear with one finger.  ‘Knife-ears!’ Danarius sneers in the vision that supplants her and he shudders.  She takes it as another gasp of pleasure and suckles on the tip.  The shudder becomes shivering as he hears her pleasured gasp.

The breath became a rain of soft fluttering along his jaw, the fallen petals and drifting pollen of a Seheron jungle spring.  He closed his eyes and let her lips drizzle as they would.  The tickle grew and suffused every inch of his being until he vibrated with it.  She trembled with him, and her breath quickened.  He drew back and parted his lips as the need to wrestle her to the bed drove him mad.  She stared at him, pure flame, from the cascade of her hair down her neck to the redness in her eyes.  He read the same want there that threatened to consume him.  Here is the answer I seek.  He leaned in to taste her, to feel the surrender of her lush lips in his.  She shivered and ripped her way out of his grasp.

“No!  I can’t do this.  Not when you want to leave…”

“Andra, I…”  But the words he’d wanted to utter stuck in his throat as steel bands closed on them and sunk their teeth into his gullet.

I need to hunt him, Andra, he’d said.  But not the rest, not, “Come with me.”

She didn’t look back as she ran.  Would she have run if she’d heard the rest of what he’d wanted to say?  He feared either answer.  She rattled around in her mansion, and never seemed to find it home the way she had his own ruin.  Kirkwall needed her.  Her sister, who she still couldn’t visit, needed her.  The abomination needed her, the blood mage, the dwarf, all of them.  The door’s slamming echoed even back to the only room he used and rammed the trap’s teeth deeper into his gut.  He couldn’t dare ask her to give up home and the demands that snared her, nor could he fail to ask, even if he had each time he’d tried.  A yes might free her, but it would poison him as he thought of all who might suffer if she left Kirkwall’s cage behind, but a no…  He couldn’t imagine losing that smile or the laugh, or her sometimes cringe-worthy jokes.  Or what small part of his soul that he’d found again through her.  No matter how he wished to run, her own bands held him just as tight, and he chafed in Kirkwall’s grasp.

He ripped himself free of the bands that had bound themselves to his feet, the bands that kept him from running right after her.  He reached for his sword—Aveline’s guards were losing against the new wave of bandit assaults—and forced himself to follow.  Maybe the other words would finally escape the trap of his cowardice.  I love you.

I've played a couple of mages, but they never really felt like Hawke to me.  I could see a warrior Hawke, but Hawke will always be a rogue to me, and a snarky rogue at that.  I'm not even sure why, to tell you the truth.  Maybe because I fell too much in love with playing DW rogue in DA:O.

I played through the first time as maleMage Hawke and ended up rivalmancing Fenris and now I can't see him with anyone else ^^; At first I was doing it (as a player) for the drama/lolz but it actually came off rather well. He was snarky/helpful and pro-freedom-for-everyone. I thought the rivalmance worked because you could still get the impression they really cared for each other even though they have a big issue they disagree on and could endlessly frustrate one another, like when Fenris asks if it bothers you that he's a runaway slave and you can counter with "hello, apostate?". I could even buy that once Fenris comes around to think "ok Hawke is pretty much the only mage I've ever met strong enough not to fall to blood magic/demons" that he could become protective of an idealistic Hawke, especially with his "Not all mages are as strong as you are." lines

I like friendmance mage-hawke. *nod*

Because nothing says "what the **** is WRONG with you two", then a pro-mage mage-hawke and their anti-mage Fenris, being bestiest best best friends and luvures! specially when at the end, mage-hawke sides with the templars at the end. :o:police:

Not really. Fenris is all Frowny face if you side with the mages, but if he's friendship loyal he goes ".. you lead me to strange places. I <3 you.".. basically.

I love you.

This is terrific.  Thanks for sharing.

My suggestion is wager.

This my first time posting a fanfic, I hope you enjoy it.  *bites nails nervously*

This is the result of my daughter's prompt 'Splenetic', via her word of the day challenge.

The Whining Road

Without the benefit of daylight it could be difficult to tell day from night in the deep roads. An area was either lit or unlit. The tunnel Hawke and her companions were currently in was sweltering. Lava spewed up on either side of the broad expanse that once was a road. Hawke’s bones ached and she stifled a yawn. It could just be walking in the heat, but she believed that her body was saying that it was approaching night time on the surface. “I believe that we’re almost to a side chamber where we can make camp for the night. “
“That’s the nicest thing that you’ve said to me all day Hawke,” Varric jested. She smiled at the dwarf. It was moments such as these when she truly appreciated the dwarf’s sense of humor.
The small band plodded on through the stifling air and eerie quiet of the passageway. After what seemed like an hour to Hawke, Fenris pointed to their right and remarked, “It would seem that we have found our campsite.” They poked their heads into the chamber a small dead end of a room markedly darker and cooler than the main road and found that it was safely empty.
“Yes, this will do just fine,” said Varric. “All it lacks is room service, oh and beds and a privy.”
“Let’s set up camp, shall we?” Hawke suggested.
The group began rolling out their bedrolls along the wall furthest from the entrance.  Fenris and Hawke grouped theirs close together and a bit apart from Varric and Anders’ bedrolls. They also erected a small lean to in the corner as a privy, wandering off in the deep roads for privacy was nearly always fatal. Enough light and heat entered the room from the opening to the main passage that a fire was unnecessary.
After the camp was set up, the party ate their dinner. Fenris sat with Hawke upon her spot and shared some of his dry rations with her.   The two quietly conversed as they ate. Varric looked at the two of them and smiled. He contemplated how this part of Hawke’s story would unfold. Anders interrupted Varric’s creative musings saying, “What does she see in him?  He is more an animal than a man.”
“You think that you would be better for her Blondie?” Varric could not resist baiting Anders, having listened to him whine for the better part of the day about being dragged into the Deep Roads again.
“Yes, I do think that. I know how to treat a woman.” Anders defensively retorted as he gathered the crumbs from his meal into a pile.
“He seems to be doing just fine,” Varric pointed with his chin towards Fenris and Hawke.
Anders turned to see Fenris folding up his blanket and giving it to Hawke to use as a pillow. “Oh sure, he’s the picture of thoughtfulness now, but how long before his anger gets the better of him and he hurts her?”
“I don’t believe that he would do that and Hawke can take care of herself if you hadn’t noticed.” Varric was being serious now.
“It doesn’t matter. I believe that she’ll get tired of his moods and I am much more fun to be around.” A smug smile crossed Anders’ face as he stretched out and laid his head upon his backpack.
“Sweet dreams, Blondie.” Varric sat watching the door relieved that he shared the first watch with Fenris.

Fenris is utterly quiet in the Deep Roads.  I say that with a very sad and sorrowful tone, mind you.  I didn't really realize it until very recently, as I usually make my sibling companion a warden, which seriously limits my ability to take Fenris with us on the Expedition.  But I challenged myself in a recent PT and "killed" my sweet little sister (which is a painful episode but made real sense in the over-arching story, I thought).

It just really suprised me, once I had Fenris tagging along, that he says absolutely nothing during the entire episode.  Not one word.  It's very frustrating, actually.  I asked a friend of mine what she thought, said, "So do you think Fenris, as an elf, just deplores the dark so much he broods that much more down there?"  Unfortunately, my friend only thought the question was funny and couldn't answer.  My curiosity remains unsated.

That, or my friend is just finds it incredibly funny I keep bouncing questions about DA2 off her, as she's never played the game.  Who knows?

Your fic is sweet, anyway.  I enjoy gaining some sort of perspective other than my own of such adventures.  Thanks so much for sharing!

Slightly OT, but I found this Fengirl sig bar (and a larger version) on DA: credit to U2QueenBee, who has given permission but appreciates credit. Is anyone still maintaining the sig/art post on the front page? If so, can we give her credit there? (FYI, though I don't see one, she says she's happy to do a Fenboy one too.)
