Alas, Anders' fan thread has beat us out, if by only one page, ladies and gentlemen. Fenris has my heart and my Hawke, but I do so love my manic apostate!

To Anders! A finer abomination, I've never met!

That's so funny.  My honey is playing Witcher 2 and I swear that Sebastian's voice actor plays one of the roles in that game.  It was weird hearingwhat sounded like Sebastian not preaching. Posted Image

I'm playing Witcher 2 as well and I thought I heard Sebastian while roaming around Flotsam.  I'll have to check the voice actors when I get home this evening.

Hi Fengirls and -boys. I've been lurking for a while now and generally enjoying the thread and everyone's work. I'm another of the "I've played through twice so far and can't escape romancing Fenris" types, heh. Just posting to say hi, and throw in a (tiny) bit of Fenfic I found myself writing earlier so that my first post isn't just saying hello. Hope you like.

She rested on hands and knees over him where he lay on her large, four-poster bed. Firelight illuminated them
as they gazed at each other, his hands moving slowly up and down the curves of her waist.

Her face took on a look uncustomarily shy for a woman known for never flinching, and he was puzzled.
But in this brief moment of lowered defenses, she uttered the words, simple words really, that she had not been able to say until now.

“I…love you, Fenris.”

His eyes were the first to change. A sudden wideness, closely followed by a small intake of breath and his
face was transformed into a look of awed wonder, as words he never expected to be directed to him and all the depth of feeling they conveyed broke against and washed over his walls.

She watched with growing pleasure and understanding this brief, but seemingly timeless, reaction, knowing she saw his heart in that instant.

When the paralysis of shock had passed, his face transformed once more, this time into a look of passionate
love. As he pulled her down to him, in the moment before their lips met, he growled,

“And I can’t live without you.”

I think Fenris will always be "the love of my life" LMAO. My boyfriend says to me "so how is lover boy today?" since I have him all over my computer and phone and I'm always on here or playing DA2 lately, LOL. Im such a fangirl it's pathetic. I have philisophical debates about DA2 and DA:O :?. Not just Fenris though, while he is my favorite, I do love to talk about all aspects of the game and the philosophy. Such a nerd I know.. I know...

Seriously though, it is fun for me to actually not romance him. I've never done a playthrough where I haven't romanced him. I only feel bad because I'm romancing Isabella on my male Hawke and that means Fenris gets no lover at all :pinched:. In my head cannon he meets one of my Hawkes from another playthrough and all is well, LOL.

Kindred spirits, galore!  I knew I was in a bad way when I got into a RL argument with a good friend about the "plight of the mages" in my living room one night.  My husband thought it was hilarious.

Oh, another one of my fave characters.  Although I simply can not picture him as a romance interest.  Seriously, I think of him as some sort of insanely attractive priest.  IOW, nice to look at but completely off-limits.  Maybe it's the Catholic in me.

But I seriously enjoy the philosophy he shares with the group.  And how they each react to it.  Varric in particular has me rolling when I have the two of them bantering along behind my Hawke.  Varric saying he suddenly appreciates "broody" companions that much more never fails to get me to chuckle.  But I like how Seb challenges Fenris' bitterness more than anything.  It's not overtly aggressive or confrontational, just a calm sort of questioning challenge that leaves Fenris THINKING.  And I love that.

First off, not enough space to put all my sigs! I had to crop and crop just to paste these 3 together :pinched:.

Second of all.. had a theory I'm working on and decide to throw it out to you guys. I was thinking about the ritual that actually happened to Fenris. Also, the ever present question of his memories. Here is my theory on the whole mess.

First of all we know 2 things. That his memories were wiped completely and that his tattoos are lyrium. Now, I actually don't buy into the "trauma erased his memories" bit. Mostly because I know something of this and commonly when something traumatic happens people do not lose ALL their memories but do lose the memory of the traumatic event. It isn't like TV anesthesia where a person wakes up and doesn't know who they are or their name or anything. So, that leads me to the other take - Fenris' memories wiped by magic.

Alright so if it is magic how does he get them back, it has to be permanent erasure right? Well, I was thinking what the Lyrium tattoos actually do. The skills and powers they actually give Fenris are more akin to mage's spells than they are to say Templar's skills. In that he does not need any augmentation because the Lyrium is the catalyst, but he does need to access the abilities in order to use them. I'm convinced he activates these skills through emotion. Mostly anger I would assume. I could see Danarius training him to activate his abilities by forcing him to become angry at something and it would have taken time to control the powers I'm sure.

So with that being said magic comes from the fade right? A tranquil mage is severed from the fade and therefore cut off from emotions. So, what would it take to attach a non-mage to the fade allowing him access to the ability to literally "phase" between the fade and the world? Literally phasing without knowing one is accessing the fade. Besides a horribly tortuous process that I can only imagine and feel empathy for I can think of no other way than to attach a person's emotions to the fade. Just as a mage is born with this ability to access the fade at will and in dreams a normal person would have to have some substitute for that natural ability. The lyrium becomes the channeling port and the emotion is the trigger. All magic is accessed through a connection with the fade and is closely tied to emotions. I would assume a Tevinter Magister would use that knowledge to attempt to create a bridge between host and magic. However, it has to be a very specific connection otherwise any emotion would trigger the power and the lyrium and would probably kill the host or send him phasing into the fade permanently.

So, during the process of connecting whatever emotion/brain/thoughts/triggers what have you to the Lyrium the mages probably literally wiped out everything in Fenris' mind. Either wiped, or suppressed it far enough down so that they had no idea how they could be recoverable. Now, the easy part is saying that when Fenris is faced with great emotional feeling the connection between the lyrium and his powers might waiver. Therefore whatever memories still exist in his brain are able to be recalled because they are attached, like his powers, and him, to the fade.

I think it's a pretty good theory. I don't want to write an essay here, but that is the skin and bones of it. Yes, I know.. I'm a total nerd, and a philosophy minor

It could be that the magic did not actually erase Fenris memories, but blocked access to them. Having experienced traumatic amnesia myself, all of my memories were effectively blocked for several years, but the emotion attached to these memories still remained (fear, anger, etc.). It took a catalytic event to resurrect the memories behind the emotion. This could be anything (sound, taste, smell, touch, strong emotion). For me, it was puberty. However, the memories of the event are still not complete. They are spotty at best (thank the maker!). I will say one thing, until the memories resurfaced it was very difficult to deal with the emotions behind that event. I suppose that's why I can relate to Fenris on some level.

So since Fenris remembers the event of the ritual and especially the pain so well I'm thinking he did not get traumatic amnesia. With traumatic amnesia the brain is literally protecting the body from the stress of the traumatic event. It severs access to those memories and it is a defense mechanism of survival.

Fenris remembers the ritual clearly but nothing before. He has memories after, and has no problems recalling things that happen to him afterwards. That makes me think it had to be some kind of magic. Some kind of side-affect whether planned or no, to make him into a better weapon. Allowing him access to this power was probably easier if started with a hollow specimen. That is they probably needed to or wanted to start with a blank slate, and the pain is just side effect from having Lyrium burned/branded etc. I would assume they used the raw lyrium liquid like you find in DA:O. The poisonous kind that has to be used cautiously or it kills the user, but is also the most powerful form of Lyrium.

I think it is pretty evident though that memories cannot be truly wiped away by magic or any other means. Suppressed, yes - wiped - no. So my emotional catalyst still stands I believe.

Isabela: Sebastian, in the off chance that we get killed in our adventures can you put in a good word with the Maker for me?

Sebastian: You intend to repent for your past misdeeds?

Isabela:
Repent is such a strong word, I was thinking something more along the lines of feeling sorry on a case-by- case basis.

Fenris: Such as feeling sorry for cheating a poor man at a game of cards?

Isabela:
You lost fair and square, and besides you weren't exactly the poor defensless elf last ni-

Sebastian: (staring at the ground) Look, glitterdust! When I was a boy I nearly blew my head off playing with a little bit of glitterdust near a candle.

Isabela: Oh how cute, he's blushing.

I have tried several times to post these long-tush blurbs describing my thoughts on your considerations, Arquen.  I think my computer is just being mean to me today, however.  And just as I started THIS post, I had to rush downstairs thanks to tornado sirens blaring outside.  I am beginning to think I'm just not meant to respond to your thoughts, here, and that's a shame, because I've enjoyed reading through what you've shared.

Suffice to say, I agree with pretty much all you've said.  I do think magic is very much an emotions-based phenomenon.  Even the demons and spirits you come across seem to be fueled in large ways by various emotions, from anger and rage to pride and faith.

I think Danarius is like any other mage, using emotions to manipulate and shape his will on the world and people around him.  And like any magic, he vested in Fenris abilities fueled by Fenris' own emotions.  But that depended, too, on Fenris having the emotions Danarius wanted him to have, those that would keep Fenris limited and dependent on Danarius' own will and desires.  He couldn't allow Fenris ties or bonds to anyone else, nor any sense of self-worth and value, anything that would permit Fenris strength enough to refuse Danarius.  Squashing his memories, I think, was a deliberate process designed to rob Fenris of family bonds, one that occurred before the ritual.

Hawke, then, becomes a force of freedom for Fenris in so many more ways than simply killing bounty hunters and providing protection from slavers.  In providing another level of feeling and emotion to Fenris' experience, she allows him to free his memories and move forward into the future.

Hey, would you be irked if I grabbed your Anders siggie?  I like it.

This is a response to the movie prompt.  I started other longer ones and decided to tinker with them later.  I hope you enjoy it.  Great now I'm babbling like Merrill.

Varric, Isabela and Fenris took their usual seats on the short side of the Hanged Man’s bar.  At the dwarf’s signal Corff brought them a round, ale for Varric, a shot of whiskey for Isabela and a bottle of wine for Fenris.  Corff set down Varric’s and Isabela’s, but paused in front of Fenris who sat swaying in his seat.  “Looks like he’s had enough already,” Corff quipped.  Fenris managed to scowl at the man before laying his head upon the bar.
“It’s alright Corff, I’ll take care of him,” Varric reassured the man.
“Besides he needs to get ‘hammered’ tonight,” Isabel laughed at her own joke.  “That was a good one worked on a few different levels.  Hammered—drunk, Thor hammer wielding god who was shirtless when we left him alone with Hawke, and of course there’s...”
“Don’t go there Isabela,” Varric gestured with his head to Fenris.  The elf had crossed his arms on top of the bar and placed the side of his head upon them with his face pointed towards his companions.  His half-closed green eyes were red and a faint white/blue glow emanated from his tattoos indicating his defensive state.
“Look at him Varric, he’s barely conscious, besides he’ll have to deal with it sooner or later.  How long has it been, for Hawke?” Isabela pressed her point.
In unison, Varric and Fenris replied, “Almost three years.”  Coming from Varric’s mouth the swords were a statement of fact, coming from Fenris they were tortured muttering.
“Maker, I’m surprised that Elthina hasn’t made her an honorary sister.  Don’t get me wrong, I respect Hawke, but still she’s got, you know, needs[/b],” Isabela uttered the last word in rough deep tone.  Her brown eyes flashed as they often did when she was being naughty.
“Ah, but you seem to forget Isabela that Hawke’s thigh bones are connected to her heart strings.  God or no god, she just doesn’t care enough about him.  As far as Hawke’s concerned Thor is not getting anywhere,” Varric’s expression was smug.
“So, taking the bet?” Isabela baited Varric.
“This is heartless Ravaini, and I’ll hate myself in the morning, but it’s a bet.”  Easy money had always been Varric’s greatest weakness.
Bleary eyed Fenris glared at them. “I hate you both,” he slurred and took a long hard pull on his wine.  In few moments, he slowly lowered the wine bottle from his lips, a sly smile graced his face as he gestured towards the door and uttered “Ha!”  Varric and Isabela whipped their heads around and saw at what Fenris had gestured.  A tall muscular blond man in shing armor walked towards them.
He bowed slightly and politely inquired, “Might I join good people for a few drinks?”
“Thor,” Varric was practically crowing, “yes please do.  Where’s Hawke?”  The dwarf was all smiles now.
“Asleep.  Shortly, after you left she excused herself and retired to her room.  I however am wide awake and I hate to drink alone!”  His unnaturally blue eyes sparkled in the inn’s dim light.
“Then by all means join us,” Isabela said placing her left hand on Thor’s knee, while sliding Varric 20 silvers with her right hand.
“I win,” Fenris croaked and passed out on the bar.
