Hmm, I just read that short story. Some good insights there.
Fenris doesn't realize that he's been gifted with exceptional abilities in his own way. He also has a very narrow idea of what "freedom" or "success" or a "good life" mean... all based on what he observed the magisters enjoying in Tevinter. He can't imagine the Dalish life being a happy one. Nobody can, because from the outside, I'm sure it seems like it sucks. It's really hard to sell the Dalish lifestyle to someone who hasn't been raised in it, or someone who has somewhere else to go. And that's why they don't go sneaking into alienages to recruit... because the life would probably not be ideal for anyone who wouldn't seek it out. (I'm still of the opinion that the Dalish live better than anyone but the nobility, but I'm not going to try to convince a man who considers what we do "picking for scraps" of that. It'd be like convincing a herring that the land is the best!)
But anyway, Dalish aside, I wonder if it's possible to teach Fenris to think like that... to look at someone else, and figure out how they got into a particular situation, and imagine what he might do in the same place. It's something a great many people raised free are ultimately incapable of, and Fenris doesn't have the requisite emotional background.

We know that Fenris competed for the markings, and used the boon that came with them to free his mother and sister. This shows, if not compassion, then at least a strong sense of duty and an urge to protect and make things better for his family. It also shows that even pre-marking Fenris valued freedom enough to go to a lot of trouble to secure it for his family. Which makes the brain-washing that wiped his memory and turned him "docile" all the more tragic.
Prompt!
(In my Head!Canon, Fenris's lyrium markings are more powerful then they are in-game)
(Very early in the game)
Hawke: Hey, Fenris? Those markings of yours....
Fenris: Yes?
Hawke: They let you phase though solid objects. Like people...or walls...or bars.
Fenris: Yes...
Hawke: I've seen you do it!
Fenris: Is there a point to this?
Hawke: How, in Andraste's name, did the Tevinter keep you? It sounds to me like you could have just walked the hell out, any time you wanted!
Fenris: ... You have never been a slave. Yes, I could leave, but here would I go? They took all my desires when they took my memories. I knew nothing but serving my master.
Hawke: But you changed. You left.
Fenris: Eventually.
Hawke: ...Tell me the story someday?
Fenris: Maybe.

That thought came to me before as well like how far can the phasing go. I don't think it lasts long enough or has enough potency to make his whole body phase, but that would be something. Maybe his powers can be trained further so in time he could do this. However, for now I don't think he can focus it for that long.

I think anyone can detect traps if you raise their cunning high enough. It just takes a rogue to disable them.

(Suddenly a loud thud is heard from hawke's room. She rushes upstairs only to find...)
Hawke: fenris!? How did you get in here, and why are you taking my mantle? Wait, what happened to my door?! There is a hole in it the size of.. did you phase through my door!?
Fenris: bodhan wasn't here to let me in. I used my.. hmm.. talents to make sure everything was alright.
Hawke: and the mantle? Was stealing that part of your plan to check on me?
Fenris: well, I just.. it was a bad idea, hawke. Im sorry.
Hawke: take it fenris. Wear it on your belt or something, toss it in the fire. If you want it that bad. (She grinned mischieviously at his obvious discomfort.)
Fenris: I'll be going then. I will repay you for the door. I just wanted to make sure something hadn't happened with all the trouble you get into. You should really consider hiring guards.
Hawke: oh fenris why would I hire guards when I have you. Every door in kirkwall trembles at the sight of you. Not to mention your talent for ripping people's hearts out. (The last words sounded more bitter than she had meant.)
Fenris: I shall endeavor to use more conventional methods of entering your house hawke. Thank you for the mantle. I shall, make use of it. (He turned and began walking toward the front exit.)
Hawke: you can't call it a gift if you were going to steal it anyways you know. But your welcome!

That is a pretty good one. I'm not a fan of genderswappage, but I don't hate it or anything. I find it amusing at best. These are done quite well, though Femris just looks off to me. She doesn't look lanky enough I think. Plus, the bewbs get me >.<

It's very well drawn, and I don't mind gender swapping in and of itself, but it gives me the irrits when a male character is gender-swapped and suddenly they have to change their outfit to show off boob, or thigh, or their hair inexplicably grows longer, like long hair comes part and parcel with ovaries. This picture does ALL OF THESE THINGS *sadface*
Looking at what this Fem!Fenris is wearing just makes me go "By the Dread Wolf! Why?"

I thought I read somewhere that initially everyone was going to be able to detect traps and then they took that ability away. But, that's why it's still in the voicepack. Does that sound familiar to anyone else? I can't seem to find anything on it right now...Arquen wrote...
Listening to his voicepack I found "beware trap ahead." If he can detect traps why can't he pick locks. I mean he could just totally phase through them. This has come up before, doc even did a prompt on it but I would find it hilarious if he actually phased locks lol.

Great drawing.
I have missed being able to get to the forum the last few days. Murphy's Law has ruled my life. It's nice to catch a breather and catch up a bit. Looks like I need to go chase down some people's fanfics. That is something to smile about.

The monster comment makes me smile every time. I'm such a terrible person I think >.<. Whenever it comes to Merrill I agree with Fenris. My favorite line is when you first meet her and she uses blood magic.
(paraphrasing)
Fenris: blood magic? Foolish, very foolish.
Merrill: I know what it looks like, but I know what I'm doing.
Fenris: Oh yes, ignore the tiger, never mind that he is going to eat you! good advice.
Anders tries to take the "big brother" approach trying to scare Merrill out of it. Fenris just straight up goes to *facepalm,* and attempts to curb it by stating the obvious. He is like me in this respect when it comes to Merrill.

I'm so bad. I like bringing them both on the keeper quest. Poor Merrill. Even my Hawke can't help but say "what did you think was going to happen!?"

What's good about that was Merrill wasn't officially your party member yet. You can go ahead and ****** her off as much as you like!

In that regards it is as if the templars take a back seat to the mage... Idk, It was not really appararent in any of the games imo. I prefer the idea that a school could be provided. wher ethe maglings could still have family but attend a school for formal directions; however if a mageling does get in trouble they could be put in the dormitories for 24 hour education/ observation until the danger had passed.
I have to support Fenris tho, I didnt see much examples of magic helping people, and saying that becuz mages are pressed into the circle caused them to hurt others.. well idk. The old adage that absolutel power corrupts absolutely is true... and unfortunately no matter whom regulates magic and mages rules in society there would have to be political plays/ power plays/ and most likely agendas. Its an imperfect world , so I tend to think Thedas would be too.
Mages are likened { i think?} to having nuclear weapons layign about... they may never fire, but once they do, the world is damaged beyond ken.
Great debate and fantatasitc stories Arquen and Doc always makes me grin.

didnt Gregoir in DAO mention that Irving [ first enchanter] had the power to make the decisions in regards to the tower rules etc, and that he was [ paraphrasing this] was there to enforce it ?
What I think that meant was that Gregior let Irving set the ground rules that govern the day-to-day lives of the mages who live in the Circle. Gregior's Templars, in addition to keeping an eye out for Abominations, would enforce those rules and act kind of like cops/guards/hall monitors.
Gregior and Irving were adversaries, but they did trust each other. That's why Gregior says the only way he'll call off the Annulment is if Irving tells him it's safe. Can you imagine how Meredith would have reacted to that suggestion?

She was insane in the end, no doubt about it, but sadly Orsino was not insane.. he turned out jsut to be evil or stupid or both. [ cant forget how he aided Quentin's research. HE MUST have known what the man was doing... I cant quite get my thoughts around it tbh. Was apparently a lot of discord in the circle before the tainted idol came about. [ discord with templars etc.] I got the impression that Orsino was pressing for the champions siding more than Meredith too.. so mb my poor skeptic heart believes he was manuevering politically even then....
