Fenris: (dressed in the armor of The Guardian) What is your quest?

Hero: I seek the Urn of Sacred Ashes! Where's the High Dragon?

Fenris: We ran out. (gestures to a shelf) There are three urns over there. One contains what you seek, choose wisely.

Hero: (picks the wrong urn and bursts into flames)

Fenris: (sighs) He has chosen poorly. Next!

That is awesome!  I guffawed, sitting here in my office, so that my coworkers asked, "What?  What's so funny?!"  Thanks!

It's the voice, has to be! In RL I'd hate moody/broody guys unless.....they had THAT voice Posted Image.

I was an Alistair fangirl but there is no going back now, he's dumped!  Fenris all the way!

:o Ditto. I don't post in this thread but I love it. Discovered some good artists to follow on deviantart too!

I can never dump Alistair. When he popped up in Kirkwall I was praying for a "flirt" option, lol, my Warden would cut his stones off if he cheated though.

I won't lie. I was all set up to hate Fenris. Well...maybe not hate him. But...well, listen to the summation of the kind of character he is!

"Oooh he's dark and broody and has a tortured past that he just can't escape! And he has white hair and a giant sword and he's covered in tattoos that GLOW! Oh, and he has super-strength! And AMNESIA!"

In short, he's so Final Fantasy that even Sephiroth would tell him to tone it down. And Gideon Emry.... Don't get me wrong, he's an excellent VA who gave an excellent performance, but he did not help the Final Fantasy Overload because....well, you know.

And I'm not 16 anymore. I've outgrown Final Fantasy and it's broody mopey girly-looking "heroes." So I was all set up to hate Fenris.

....Turned out, as the game progressed, Fenris was the only character I really felt like I got to know. I actually got to see him at his highest points and his lowest, learned his good qualities and his bad ones. Unlike a lot of the other characters in DA:2, I really felt like I was there for him, not commenting on his life as he lived most of it without me.

By the end of the game, he was my!Hawke's best friend. Which was curious, because My!Hawke was also in a Friendmance with Anders. Which would have lead to some interesting dialog between them which....of course...have to take place offscreen, like all the best parts of DA:2.

...Damn you, dead horse! Take THAT! And THAT! And THAT!

I think Alistair is someone I probably could dump very easily. I might feel terrible for a while for leading him on, but I've never found Alistair irresistable. More like, sort of sexy and perfectly acceptable when hardened. Zevran, on the other hand, was irresistable to me. I always made sure to have my way with him first, and then move on to Alistair if playing a female HN. I never actually managed to get them both through the political marriage thing. :/ If I *could* do that, I would. If I'm saving Ferelden, I want to keep it.

Oh, and I sorted out my Rivalrymance ending with Fenris and finally got him to stay with me at the end. Although I found that ending to be ever so slightly less satisfying. The kiss you get in the Gallows is sexy as hell, but I liked his defiance more. That felt a lot truer to his character, since my Hawke never really tried to change Fenris' opinion before; he only really said, "you're wrong, you arse." Then kissed him. More like he tried to bribe Fenris to keep his mouth shut, if not using it for things I shan't elaborate on.

Either way, I'll try to do the friendship romance with him soon, but right now I'm playing through to romance Anders. I can say this straight away though; it feels wrong leaving my Hawke and Rival!Fenris... XD Let's see if that feeling will wear off soon.

This is really interesting because I felt the exact same way but for the opposite people. I can dump Zevran without a second thought. It's like, "Meh you're like the village bicycle, so I have no qualms lovin' and leavin' ya.". But with Alistair I feel he is legitmately marriage material, heh. So, I always do what you do too, but in reverse. Romance Zevran, then move on to Alistair and dump Zev once I get confronted. Admittedly, I also make sure Alistair is hardened.

The Gallows kiss was toe-curling...must say. I always seem to friendmance Fenris though, probably because the mages annoy me (except for Orsino...er, before he went nuts on me). Not that the templars didn't get on my nerves too, but the whole kidnapping thing plus the Leandra zombie-mom thing, blood mages freakin' everywhere, on top of Anders just killed my passion for their plight. By the end of it I was like...

*Looks at Fenris* "Yeah, #$&% em." *Brofist*

I'll quote myself from the other "who hated Fenris" thread. I spent waaaayyy to much energy and time on there writing volumes of Fenris debate, LOL.

"People stereotype Fenris based on looks, past characters, and personal bias. It is so blinding that they completely miss out on the depth of the character. "

I love Final Fantasy, but I never actually saw Fenris as anything Final Fantasy-esque. Perhaps if I had stalked the boards pre-game and only had a picture and a voice I might have fallen into that trap of "Oh look another wounded hero, badass pretty boy type." Yet when I go into a game I try to go in without assumptions. This allowed me to appreciate Fenris for who he was in game, the character Gaider designed, and not allow personal experience and bias from previous "cliche" characters in the way.

Anders is another who fell into this trap. Having known him from Awakenings a lot of people were like "omg he is romanceable, awesome I loved him in Awakenings!" and then were disappointed or shocked by his new "developments" in DA2. They had set certain standards and bias' in their heads of how he was going to be, and either were pleasantly surprised or disappointed or both.

Edit cuz Geisha's quote just reminded me of this:

LOL, that's one of the artists I watch now. <3

#$(*% MAGES! SRSLY

It's hard for Fenris not to get pinned with the "Final Fantasy"/Bishie-Lover Trap, but if you're able to put that aside you find a pretty well-done character in there. He got my notice on first play through when he busted out the Qun on the Arishok. Mmmm intelligent men. Way more multi-dimensional than a Sephiroth/Cloud/Squall IMHO (even though I love the FF series).

Oh yay! D-D is back so I think Yellow must return to the Fenris thread also. Just don't spend to much time dreaming of the elf. You have that mod that you need to work on -not so subtle nudge nudge-   ;)

Same for me, I knew nothing of the Fenris character, or any of the Da2 characters prior to actually playing it. I had no idea what to expect but Fenris stole the show, and truthfully saved the game for me. I didnt particularly feel " anything" for the other companions or even Hawke family the first PT but I was intrigued by the Fenris character. That caused me to play again, and slowly I developed some thoughts on the other companions but mostly Fenris. I think he is one of the most believable personality wise. I can "grasp" what motivates him, while Im still confused on Izzy's drive. [ I mean other than the pseudo sex drive] . I have never played any of the FF games nor Halo etc. so the voice was SOOOOOOOOO dominating . It totally puddled me, plus it was magnificently acted imo. I dont hate the game. nor do I luv it. but one thing I do LUV about the game is that awesomely written character.

The Warden (again)

Fenris: Why exactly do you want to fix your demonic artifact?

Merrill: It's not a demonic artifact. The eluvian was built by elves. It's an elven artifact.

Fenris: That doesn't explain why you are so insistent on restoring it.

Merrill: It's the reason why Mahariel, The Warden had to leave my clan.

Mahariel: (walking up from behind Merrill) I had intended to come back, but I got a little side-tracked.

Merrill: (turns around and hugs the Warden) You're alive! I thought that the eluvian had cursed you...well Duncan said it cursed you...I'm rambling again aren't I?

Mahariel: Merrill you're a Keeper, you're entitled to ramble. (looking at Fenris) And who is this fellow, he looks like his face would crack if he smiled.

Fenris: I am Fenris. The rest is none of your concern.

Mahariel: Well then. Nice to meet you Fenris.

Merrill: The clan is here. The Keeper, and Haran Paival, and Master Ilen, we could go and see them.

Mahariel: I can't stay. Warden business, but before I go a certain dwarf tells me that you have the mirror Duncan destroyed.

Merrill: The Eluvian is a relic of the Elvhan I'm trying to repair it.

Mahariel: Merrill. It is dangerous, it's not just for communication, things can travel through it and what is on the other side is anyone's guess.

Merrill: How do you know this? No one's seen a working eluvian since the fall of Arthalan.

Mahariel: I met the daughter of Asha'bellanar in my travels. She found a working one.

Fenris: How convenient.

Merrill: I take it was in someplace far from here.

Mahariel: (sighs) There's no stopping you then. Please be careful da'len, I'd like to see you again.

Merrill: Creators watch over you Mahariel. (The Warden walks away)

Fenris: So you and the Warden?

Merrill: Fenris, I swear by the Dread Wolf if you keep it up I will hex your hair pink again...and not by accident.

Why so little M!HawkeXFenris? D: I actually prefer that pairing to Fem!Hawke/Fenris. I know, blasphemy. :P

The Warden
"So. You're a blood mage?" Alejandro Hawke growled, narrowing his eyes.
"Yes," Warden Amell sighed.
"And you learned from a demon?" Fenris asked, arms crossed.
"Yes." she said calmly, examining her well-trimmed nails.
"And we're...related?" Alejandro demanded.
"Apparently. I can do tests, if you'd like. I'd just need some blood-"
"NO!" Alejandro cried, holding up his hands quickly and looking panicked. "No no no, no blood from me. I don't deal with demons, blood mages, or children."
"What, you've a problem with children?" Amell asked suddenly, looking offended.
"There so...small, and...messy." Alejandro shuddered.
"So I guess you're prejudice against dwarves!" Amell cried, glaring.
"What? No! My best friend is a dwarf! I mean, I hate dwarves who, say...trick me into killing renegade Qunari, or leave me to die in a dwarvern thaig littered with Shades and darkspawn, but other then that, I'm perfectly fine with the short, bearded people!"
Amell giggled nervously. "Well...I guess you can't be too racist, seeing as you're friends with a Dalish elf."
"You assume much." Fenris muttered.
"Ah yes. We're 'friends.'" Alejandro smirked. "And he's definitely Dalish. Oh, and I'm also part Mabari!"
"Not helpful, Alejandro." the elf sighed.
"I'm...confused." Amell tilted her head. "I never was good at understanding sarcasm..."
"Okay then. Let me explain. Fenris isn't Dalish. Those markings are made of lyrium, burnt into his flesh by a magister we killed a couple years back. Quite the bonding moment."
"I'm sure. But..." Amell furrowed her brow. "Why'd you put emphasis on the 'friends?'"
The two men were quiet.
"Are you...serious?"

Zevran was experienced in ways Alistair couldn't have imagined, he was very much the artist, and he is an elf... with an accent... He's like honey to me. Sweet, sticky and soothing. I tried to hook up with him in DA2, but jelus Fenris got jelus, so... :(

Now Alistair -- unhardened -- was petulant, whingey and cringey. I'd walk away from that Alistair if I ever met him in real life. And I'd run from DA2 Alistair. ¬_¬

I found it frustrating that there were so many blood mages around, and that Orsino eventually turns to blood magic as well. But I hated the Chantry and the Circle in Origins, and didn't like it any better in DA2, so I will probably always stand with Anders and the Mages. Besides, that whole battle feels very symbolic of some issues that exist in our own world, and I think the "plight of the mages" particularly speaks to me since it's so easily translated into "plight of the LGBT-people".

It's a pretty fluid translation, too.

You grow up and you turn out to be something people did not expect -- whether that means you're a mage or gay --and no one tries to understand you. Their first and only reaction is to constrict you, push you down, do everything in their power to stop you from going where your body and soul wants you to. People keep telling you you're wrong, you're not human, you deserve to be punished and your life should be spent repenting for a sin you've not committed. All in the name of the Maker, or God, or Allah, or whomever the f*ck people pray to. Very few modern cultures and religions are fully accepting of ******/bi/transexuality now, and they sure as sh*t weren't a century back. So I take that whole thing a little personally, even if it's a parallel and not the actual same situation. Sorry Templars of Kirkwall, IDGAF how sound your reasoning is. You're going down.

You can allegory the mage/templar argument to many things, but I seriously doubt it was supposed to be directly mirroring anything. People tend to be bias because they interpret the circle and the templars very personally. For myself I try to see it for what it is. Its like when people make allegory of lord of the rings to world war 2 saying sauron was basically hitler. This infuriated tolkien because he meant no such similarity.

I think it is important to distance oneself from personal expectations when going into any story. This allows you to see more povs and appreciate it more. Just my opinion.

As for fenris I prefer him with a female romance. Don't really know why seems to fit better in my eyes. However, I find Anders to be better with a male. That is so subjective though and I love how people can do either one. Your story and your hawke is yours, and you can play him/her however you want. I love that.

I never said it was meant to be a direct mirror, which is precisely why I said 'parallel.' And I can still see the Chantry and the Circle for what it is, but even then I don't like it. As it is, it is never more than an institution of oppression, and I don't agree with it, and I really don't understand how anyone can. But then that just comes back to personal perspective and opinions and whatnot. I think the Circle has the potential to work, but not as a prison. Magic it into Hogwarts without the houses and we've got... something.

For some reason, I kinda feel like both Anders and Fenris work better with m!Hawke. I prefer Isabela with a f!Hawke, and Merrill to remain untouched. She's just way too innocent. :/

I tend to flip/flop between mage and templar. I truly do understand the circle, and also the supporters of it. Yet I don't think anyone believes the circle is the perfect solution. Most of the time you get the "well, there is nothing better, and this works." Kind of excuses.
_
It is easy for me to *facepalm* the mages especially in kirkwall since they keep throwing examples of crazy mages at hawke. Yet when I side with the templars it is only because it is the "hard voice." The choice hawke takes to attempt to restore order and try to maintain peace.

When I side with mages I feel chaos. Yet I go huzzah for the underdog! I embrace the change, try to save as many mages as I can. I fully embrace the revolution and go "well, now our hand is forced and here goes nothing!"

I actually find adequate reasons to end up on both sides but the "saver" in me wants to try to help the mages. There has to be a better way, and annullment is just to extreme of a punishment, and tranquility for that matter.

Fenris would say I am being naive. That it isn't so simple and that freedom is a noble ideal but the mages I save are now free and will more than likely become dangers to others and themselves because now they have nothing to prevent them from doing whatever they want. Sigh... ponder ponder...

There are always a few conversations about the worth of the Circle going on on the Plot board. Personally I am not against Circles as a concept. A Mage that joins a circle surrenders their freedom, but gains a safe place to train where they will both be protected from the superstitious public and from the dangers of their own abilities. It's not a bad compromise in theory.

The problem is that it's a system that can easily be abused.

I've only completed one play-through so far, where I sided with the Mages because I couldn't justify killing them for Anders's (GODDAMNIT ANDERS) crime. Also, Meredith is a creeper.

I have no idea if my wisecracking rogue is going to do the same thing.
