OK, I lied. I did rewrite it.

(ETA: Darn formatting gremlins...)
Prompt: The Warden/Kirkwall“Maker watch over you, my friend.”
With that, Alistair turned from Hawke’s party and the Grey Wardens retreated into the smoky streets. Aniya
shook her head slightly, as Aveline’s voice cut through her surprise.
“That other Warden was right, Hawke. We need to go too.” The warrior tapped Hawke’s shoulder.
“Right.” Aniya closed her hand on the amulet she’d been given, turned, and glanced at the others. Anders had been more or less trying to hide his own identity, though there was no doubt that at least one of the Wardens besides Alistair had recognized him. One of them, the one who warned Alistair they needed to go, definitely had. Aniya could have sworn that that particular Warden had practically spat the mage’s name, though the helm muffled the sound.
As they headed towards Hightown, Fenris matched strides with her.
“Did you hear the female Warden – the one who first recognized Anders?” he asked. "I have to wonder why he wasn't dealt with earlier. She sounded like she meant that..."
Aniya blinked and didn’t hear the rest of what he said after that. Fenris was right. That voice had definitely been female, and the Warden had been smaller in build than the rest. She’d also had an air of authority about her, even though Alistair did the talking. Even
he had deferred to her when she decided it was time to go – and Alistair’s story had him as formidable in his own right, with considerable authority among Ferelden’s Wardens. That particular Warden had been fairly anonymous – her helmet revealed only blue eyes and a lock of black hair.
Wait...“Flames! I’m such an idiot!”
Fenris turned and eyed her dubiously. “What?”
Aniya caught up with him and laughed at herself.
“That wasn’t just
any Warden, the one who sounded like she wanted to kill Anders. She’s killed an
Archdemon. I’m guessing Anders wouldn’t even slow her down, Justice or no.”
Now it was Fenris’s turn to look surprised. “Are you certain?”
“It had to have been. Think about it. We were working on
The History of the Fifth Blight. Who is one of the few female Ferelden Wardens? That was
Alistair of the Grey. Who else is going to be that familiar with him,
and command that kind of authority over Wardens? I just wish I’d have put two and two together earlier.
That’s someone I wish I could meet for longer than a few seconds.”
They continued on towards Hightown, with the shouts of Qunari in battle halting any further conversation.

“I hope you don’t mind that I gave her that pendant. Something about her story got to me.”
Alistair leaned on the rail of the ship that was now carrying their band away from the smoking mess that was Kirkwall.
His companion removed her helmet, shaking free a long, black braid, snorted, and poked him in the ribs. “No, you big softie.”
Alistair sighed and gave her The Eyebrow.
“Seriously,” Iryne Cousland, former Commander of the Grey in Ferelden, commented. “I’m glad that you thought of it. I wish we could have done more, but I’m already in enough hot water with the First as it is. Did you recognize her name?”
Alistair shook his head. "No, I was too busy trying to figure out how to keep you from killing Anders on the spot."
"Don't remind me," Iryne said coldly, then continued in a lighter tone. “That’s the woman who sent Avernus’ research back. I remember her letter. She's the one who didn’t let it fall into the wrong hands. For that alone, she deserved more help from the Wardens than we can really give, Anders or no.” Iryne sighed.
“And that’s where the First and I disagree about how things should be.” She stared out to sea and continued to muse aloud. “And there she was, charging headlong into fire, smoke, and danger, and dragging a few of her best friends with her. Sounds familiar.”
“I don't think we've heard the last of Aniya Hawke.”

ETA an afterthought: My !Canon Warden's issue with Anders stems solely from his theft from and abandonment of the Grey Wardens. She was quite fond of him before that, even if she found him irritating at times. (Her attitude is, "Who isn't?")
