Varric: So you just walked in, did the deed, and left?
Fenris:That is not far off from what happened.
Varric: Well judging on the number of bottles in front of you, I'm guessing this wasn't just a hit and run.
Fenris: Something happened, and I just lost my nerve. I left her like an idiot.
Varric: Wait, you went in there as the leading man, and then made it seem like you were the one being used? Damnation elf, you're game is strong.

Seriously, this conversation probably happened in DA2 and we just didn't get to see it. Hawke was still sitting in bed going.."what the hell just happened?"
Ahhh, but I should have known it was all just a ploy to sex Hawke..especially if you don't romance him the way he acts with Isabela:
- Isabela: That night...I can't stop thinking about it.
- Fenris: Well, then I'll see you later.
- Isabela: That was direct.
- Fenris: I thought I'd get straight to the point. Were you expecting flowers or something?
- Isabela: Don't be absurd.
- Fenris: Then I'll see you tonight.

Not that Isabela is necessarily hard to get, but the girl is practically enthralled with him the whole game just waiting to jump his bones. And he just orders her around like it's nothing. Damn, Fenris. Damn.

[on-topic] Difference between his relationship with Izzy and then with Hawke: Izzy relationship isn't emotionally tied (although I imagine it probably could, which I think is rather cute on my Male!Hawke+Merrill PT), versus the one with Hawke which is.
[floating off-topic]
And DAMN Fenris is a man-**** in my medieval (AnyGame) neighborhood on TS2. OK, maybe that's a little much-- not like he's doing everyone, but pretty much, he has attraction to all of the girls in the party and (ROFLMAO) Sim!MRC.
Full chart--
3-bolters: Marian Hawke
2-bolters: Isabela, Merril (?!), Sim!MRC (
1-bolters: Aveline (I died of laughter with this one)

I got the impression of Fenris's negative outlook on people in general from his short story... where he reveals his thoughts about the Dalish and city elves, how he thinks they are as they are because they lack the will to fight.
Here's the relevant passage:There was nothing in the alley save for a few lone rats and an elven vagrant asleep against a garbage heap. Fenris paused and stared at the man in disgust. He’d thought to blend in more once he’d escaped the Imperium. In a land where elves were free, certainly one more elf would go unnoticed? He’d been a fool, of course. How was he to know that so many of his people would squander their freedom living like frightened cattle? If his only choices were to either dress as meekly as the local humans expected their elves to be, run off to find the wandering clans that grubbed in the dirt for whatever scraps the human kingdoms threw them, or to fight… then his choice was clear.
When I say that Fenris has his sword and that's more than most, I'm not suggesting he sell it... rather I'm suggesting that having a decent weapon and armor and the ability to wield it at all, even without lyrium markings, is a huge step above where most elves are. The elves don't have a revolution because society has been designed in such a way that they can never gather the resources to start one. An independent elf who isn't as strong as Fenris can't move out of the alienage and start living a normal life because, as they say in the city elf origins, nine times out of ten some human racists will burn their house down and they'll have to come running back.
This problem of Elvenkind is also the primary reason I have any level of sympathy for Merril and what she does. She may be the last hope for elves in the same way that Anders is the last hope for mages. I still think it's foolish and that, with elves, there's definitely a better way, definitely some alliances to be made with Ferelden and Rivain. But I can see why Merril would feel driven to it. I'm not saying that I think Elven freedom is Fenris's fight. It isn't. But he thinks that the elves living in the alienages are squandering their freedom, and he doesn't understand how very difficult it would be for them to break free from their situation. He doesn't understand that the Dalish are as they are because it was the only way to retain true freedom under the edict of the Alienages.
As for who had it tougher, Fenris or Varania, well I think it's impossible to know. I can certainly imagine Varania having it worse, but I have a rather horrible imagination. I tend to see the city elf origin as "just about normal" for what a free elf can expect in Ferelden, and if things are worse in Tevinter well... I'll leave you to extrapolate. I don't think it's necessarily true that she had a harder life, and I think that Varania may not understand the difficulty Fenris has gone through, but in Alone he does walk through the door with powerful friends, so without a doubt I'd say he has ended up in a far far better position. And that's all Varania has to go by... here she is, still with every aspect of her life under control by the Magisters, and her brother walks in free, proud, surrounded by friends. I don't think she's justified in doing what she did (although I do think there's a high percentage chance that Danarius set her up as a trap, that he contacted her the moment Fenris escaped and has been watching her and manipulating her life ever since), but I also see her as someone who has had no one show her any kindness or support since her mother died. As I said before, Fenris at least had the example of the Fog Warriors, which is probably far more kindness and freedom than Varania ever experienced.
I can actually imagine Varania turning Fenris in for much the same reasons that Fenris killed the fog warriors: a magister asks something of you, and you do it.
That's why I want to do something for her, specifically send her to the Dalish. There she'll at least experience friendship and acceptance, and if she decides she can't deal with living like that and runs off, then she deserves whatever she gets.
Agreeing completely with everything here.
It could be argued that the person who's actually alone in that quest is Varania. Fenris's loneliness at that point being forced and a method of pushing people away because of trust issues, as well as living in his past and searching for a feeling of belonging in the wrong places.
(when he said the line during my first playthrough, i was reminded of myself as a teenager screaming "i have no friends!" when I lacked confidance about myself and how to properly deal with people, when I infact had quite a few very good friends. sometimes we can be so blinded by the negative the positive is almost impossible to see, which is pretty much how Fenris behaves for the majority of the game.)

Varric: I don't get it elf, how exactly are you so successful with women?
Fenris: I don't follow.
Varric: In the last five minutes a half dozen women have given you the look, not the "he's going to pick my pockets and leave me bleeding to death in an alley" look, we're talking the "I want to jump his bones" look.
Fenris: You're not making any sense.
Varric: I'm making perfect sense. You get what I'm talking about, right Blondie?
Anders: From what I've seen, most women have soft spots for bastards, cripples, and broken things.
Fenris: I'm surprised that you don't have women lined up at your doorstep considering that you're all three of those things.

The whole thing irks me when people call it a booty call, but essentially fenris pulls off the impossible feat of being the unobtainable obtainable man. Lol, even though there is so much more to him and hawke he totally has game and doesn't even realize how much. "Waste of a perfectly handsome elf" chuckle comes to mind. He is direct though and the fact he doesn't immediately fall over isabela makes her want him oh so much more. Elfman does have game whether he realizes it or not.
The whole hawke night tho does make me feel bad for him because it isn't like hawke was unaware of what they were getting into. Yet the way it goes down.. well that is just the ultimate playa move if he were to go straight to someone else, but he doesn't unless hawke does. So he isn't anything like a man**** but has some serious issues.
Broody babies anyone?

Bahaha. I love it.
And yeah, Arquen I'm not saying Fen is a manho I just thought that comment was hilarious and so true if you look at what he does in a funnier light (like if he really only came over there as a ploy to sex Hawke). So funny.
Maybe I'm the only one who thinks it's badass when Anders is slamming his staff into the ground and turns all Vengeancy for half a second while he accuses Orsino of "bowing to his Templar jailers"...he should do that more often, surely the women would be all over him. Same goes for Fenris, just walk up and get all glowy and fist someone...SOOOOOOO BADASS.
Squee alert.

I hang on this thread because well... fenris fans are my people I guess, lol. I also lurk about the Anders thread because I do fancy Anders, but I don't venture to far away from here. Of course my posts come late at night so sometimes the thread is quiet and I gets sad, but you know not... not many ppl up at 3am wanting to post about fenris,
Also, I totally laughed at the booty call thing, but the words "booty call" irk me on a personal level I don't feel like explaining. Fenris is so naive sometimes and yet so wise at other times I just love that about him. I do agree sometimes he can't face things, and doesn't want to admit it.. least of all to himself. That's why him and a mage work so well I think. They force eachother to see what they don't want to admit to themselves.
Still, if fenris were the zevran of da2... he would have the game, the looks, the swagger, and the angst to be even more zevran playa than zevran. However, I thank the maker creators whoever for not making him anything like that. Truth be told if he was like zevran I wouldn't like him as much.

Anders is another story although I am awefully fond of badass janders he really does kind of scare me. As fenris says he kills at the behest of no demon, and knows full well what he is doing. Anders just kind of.... looses it. Your all "uh oh! He's going nuclear, get back everyone!" Wheras with fenris your more like "damn bro that's pretty harsh... I love it. Crush the ****e's heart again!"
What.. just me? Oh... *ahem*

I love that Fenris has game without even knowing it, he's really got an interesting side when it comes to his sexuality and maybe it even grows over the coarse of the game, going from that flustered little chuckle when you first flirt with him to laughing at Isabella's dirty teasing of Aveline.
I also found this on tumblr:

Hawke: Just do it! I'll explain later.
Fenris: but I am the only one taking off any armor, hawke. Im fairly certain this is not how you play cards.
Hawke: this is a new card game! The loser takes off a piece of armor, instead of losing money, you literally loose the shirt off your back!
Fenris: I don't seem to be winning any then. Seeing as I have lost more than a shirt.
*grumbles and puts his cards down*
Hawke: oh to bad you lose again! *plays cards victoriously* now, another piece!
Fenris: *goes to remove a shoulder pad.*
Hawke: oh no, the shoulder pads stay on.
Fenris: I do not understand this game at all...
Hawke: *leans over the table and smiles suggestively* then maybe we should play another game, but the shoulders still stay on.
Fenris: I think I can manage that.
Sorry i thought of that when I saw that. Fenris wearing only his shoulderpads and a scowl, priceless.

He has the incredible ability to hide all emotion, and while im sure hawke's rejection hurts he will get over it, ponder how it was a mistake, keep it professional, etc. That's one thing I love about fenris he doesn't really lose it over romance, unless you get him to the gallows then he totally abandons stoic cool and just goes for it in front of everyone. The boy has not only game, but class.

"you have me there."
I go, haha.. wait.. what does that mean? Is that a yes or a no? Is that a "I'm totally into you and I don't care either what you are," or an avoidance statement so he doesn't have to say that he's still considering the idea. It makes me smile, but it also puzzles me. I want my Hawke to be like "Is that some kind of riddle?" So, I don't know if I can agree about him not feeling worthy of Hawke's affection. Perhaps it is partly that, but it also could be more along the lines of if he is willing to actually trust someone that much and attempt to get closer to them.
Plus, he outright refuses you the first time you ask about sexy times. I seriously love that about him. It is part of his charm, that playing hard to get, except he isn't really playing... he actually IS hard to get, LOL. It makes it that much more when you finally earn his respect/trust/love. Once again, he just throws that stoic cool to the wind and jumps Hawke. I think his whole romance is very well done, it feels very real to me. Not contrived or the whole stalker love thing, or the "I love you but I hate you" or the cliche "I am incapable of love, but with you it is different" scenario. Honestly, it feels like he falls into it. Like normal people often do. They literally fall in love, and it isn't intended, but it just happens. It also takes him a few conversations and pushes to even acknowledge the feelings really.
blah blah ranting and babbling... sorry. stuck on romances all of a sudden.

I think he meant "Well, seeing as I'm interested... no, it doesn't bother me, and yet it should. You make a good point." That's my interpretation anyway.
As for the rest, I agree. Fenris is rather hard to get, which is a big reason as to why I like him. You don't automatically get his love and respect, you have to earn it. Part of the reason why I'm not too charmed with the Anders romance is that I found it REALLY easy to do. Just click on the flirt options, and BAM! face-eating time. I managed to get him to stay in the clinic for the majority of the game, and I still managed to get him to Full Friendship with my Hawke, Zack the Blood Mage. Fenris had to go on most of the quests for Friendship points.

I kind of think this is how he activates his bomb. It's right after this that the chantry goes "Boom!". I also think it's kind of biblical. I wish I were better at names and such, but there was a person that banged his staff three times. Gahhhh! This is why I never became a history major. Too bad. I love history.
