You know what always gets me? the conversation where you flirt with him and he is all "I'm a runaway slave living in a borrowed mansion, that doesn't bother you?" and Hawke is all "I'm a (insert based on class comment), does that bother you?" and Fenris is...
"you have me there."
I go, haha.. wait.. what does that mean? Is that a yes or a no? Is that a "I'm totally into you and I don't care either what you are," or an avoidance statement so he doesn't have to say that he's still considering the idea. It makes me smile, but it also puzzles me. I want my Hawke to be like "Is that some kind of riddle?" So, I don't know if I can agree about him not feeling worthy of Hawke's affection. Perhaps it is partly that, but it also could be more along the lines of if he is willing to actually trust someone that much and attempt to get closer to them.
Plus, he outright refuses you the first time you ask about sexy times. I seriously love that about him. It is part of his charm, that playing hard to get, except he isn't really playing... he actually IS hard to get, LOL. It makes it that much more when you finally earn his respect/trust/love. Once again, he just throws that stoic cool to the wind and jumps Hawke. I think his whole romance is very well done, it feels very real to me. Not contrived or the whole stalker love thing, or the "I love you but I hate you" or the cliche "I am incapable of love, but with you it is different" scenario. Honestly, it feels like he falls into it. Like normal people often do. They literally fall in love, and it isn't intended, but it just happens. It also takes him a few conversations and pushes to even acknowledge the feelings really.
blah blah ranting and babbling... sorry. stuck on romances all of a sudden.
Again Fenris has game.

Bahaha, for both of them I'm just like UGH, could you pleeaaaasee do that more often?! There's just something about that part where Anders walks forward and bangs his staff while accusing Orsino in his deep vengeancy voice that I really liked. Fit the intensity of the whole scene so well. While there are so many things I loved about DA:O (mostly character interaction) over DA2 I just really like the idea of the politically charged storyline behind DA2 more
than save the world blight. I know not many people liked DA2 as much but I will personally be pretty upset if we can't finish out Hawke's storyline in DA3, it just wouldn't seem
right. But that's just my opinion.
I kind of think this is how he activates his bomb. It's right after this that the chantry goes "Boom!". I also think it's kind of biblical. I wish I were better at names and such, but there was a person that banged his staff three times. Gahhhh! This is why I never became a history major. Too bad. I love history.
And yes, that scene where Anders grows a pair when he faces down Meredith and Orsino is one of the few times I like him in DA2....

The statement does leave room for interpretation. I always took it as totally into you..etc.. But you have to admit it's an ambiguous statement. I like that Fenris is hard to get. Or at least harder than other love interests. It does suit his personality and life experiences better. Why would a runaway slave (who is being hunted by his former master) just suddenly fall in love and throw caution to the wind. That's more Anders style, and it suits him. Anders warns you away then is ready for the passion to begin. (It's too bad I just don't like his romance, I like him just not the romance.) For Fenris it's a process. As much a I hate it, I can understand why the time gap is there. I just wish it wasn't three years. Fenris needs time, he has to grow a little before he's ready to be in a relationship and not just have the booty call mentioned earlier, which truthfully I never saw it as. I always saw it as his attempt to have a relationship and he wasn't ready. Well that's how it felt to me.
With Anders, yes he's warning you away but he also really wants a relationship. I interpret this as Anders wanting to hold on to his human side rather than succumbing to Justice entirely. He chooses Hawke because irregardless of friend/rival status he/she doesn't run away from him just because he's got a spirit in his head.
Fenris on the other hand is a little more awkward. His short story paints a picture of him on the run, living under constant scrutiny from others due to his appearance and mannerisms. Hawke (and Isabela for that matter) are used to the strange and exotic. (living with a family of mages I'd expect Hawke to be used to the strange and arcane) Going from being unused to the kindness and interest of other to suddenly having someone who wants to be close to you might have been jarring for Fenris, causing him to flee after the love scene.

I love taking fenris with me to kill keldor, torture denzig, and f up gascgard. Oh man, I smile like a fool when he does his cutscenes where he uses his fist phasing. I also just enjoy his random one lines and banters when I take him places. The slaver who takes feynriel "time to die little man." Oh geez I love it.
Anders is another story although I am awefully fond of badass janders he really does kind of scare me. As fenris says he kills at the behest of no demon, and knows full well what he is doing. Anders just kind of.... looses it. Your all "uh oh! He's going nuclear, get back everyone!" Wheras with fenris your more like "damn bro that's pretty harsh... I love it. Crush the ****e's heart again!"
What.. just me? Oh... *ahem*
Gascard! Why can I never remember his name? *shakes head*
I love cutting Fenris loose on slavers/blood mages in general. There's just something very satisfying about that, particularly Gascard's scene. I think for that one it's that Fenris leaves the 'kill' to Hawke, but is staring murder at Gascard the whole time and is more than happy to give a little hell back to Gascard. It's like Fenris gets the vengeance thing far too well, there, right down to giving Hawke the honors much like my Hawkes let him destroy Hadriana and pretty much anyone else except Verania.

I think that's one reason I like the Fenris romance so much. In the process of getting to know/befriend Fenris and in being someone he can bounce his thoughts off of, his personality really does come out. I remember the first time I took him to see the Arishok and was completely blown away by the exchange with Fenris - at the time, I knew he was unable to read and had some other preconceived notions that got thrown RIGHT out the window. I was floored.
Anders is far, far too easy as a romance, IMO - but that's part of why he creeps me out.
ETA: Well said, Arquen, as usual. I didn't see your post on this till after I wrote out this one, and I have to agree with the whole thing.

Fenris: What are you doing?
Hawke: I'm practicing using my staff in close combat.
Fenris: Really? I couldn't tell. It looks to me like your trying to beat something to death with a broom.
Hawke: Well then if your the expert on staves, let's see you do better. (tosses Fenris her staff)
Fenris: (spins staff around so that the bladed end is pointing up) What is this?
Hawke: You know what it is.
Fenris: What is it though?
Hawke: The pointy end.
Fenris: And what do you do with weapons that have pointy ends?
Hawke: You stab things with them?
Fenris: Exactly, when one is wielding a spear the idea is to stab the enemy with it.
Hawke: But it's a staff that shoots blasts of arcane energy.
Fenris: That may be, but when an enemy is up close your vaunted staff is no more than a fancy spear. I suggest you use it as such.
Fabulous!

Prompt: Quills
Act I: Lowtown, at Gamlen's house.
“Damn, Sarge. How many of these did you run into, anyway?”
Aniya steadied the mabari’s head and examined the damage from the porcupine Sarge had startled while he was running down one of the escaping bandits. He pulled his head back and whined miserably as she experimentally tried to remove a couple of the more shallow quills. Hawke let him go, sat back on her heels, sighed, and stood up. As she led the mabari to the window for better light, she glanced back over her shoulder.
“Fenris, could you bring me the blue vial and the shears, please?” She inclined her head at the rack near the writing desk, where she kept most of the potions and other healing supplies they hadn’t managed to need yet. “I’m afraid I’m going to have to cut these and push them through for it to hurt the least, and he’s still not going to like that at all.”
“Can’t it wait until Bethany gets back? Magic aside, she can probably at least stop his pain first.” he commented, somewhat dubiously, as he looked through the shelf for the vial.
Hawke answered him rather absently as she rooted through her bag of more dubious supplies that she used to mix her own poisons and trap lures. “I’d rather not wait. She can patch him up in a heartbeat, but not around them, and I don’t want them to fester. Not only that, but it’ll take me a while to get them out, so I might as well get started. At least my dear Uncle is at the Rose,” she grimaced, “otherwise I’d have to drug him so I can work in peace. He hates Sarge to begin with.” Hawke dug a pair of vials out of her bag and stared at one of them intently. “Besides, she’s with him. Maker knows when she’ll be back.”
Him…Oh. Anders. Hawke was not happy about his attentions toward her sister. She didn't trust the mage, and he couldn’t blame her, his own feelings on the subject of mages aside. Anders set his teeth on edge, and not just because he refused to acknowledge that he was an abomination. Of course, Anders had only noticed Bethany when Aniya ignored his painfully obvious interest in her. That had been unexpectedly gratifying, but Aniya hadn’t counted on Anders’ charming her somewhat naive sister or on Isabella egging them on. Hawke had been furious for days after Bethany apparently started a more...involved relationship with Anders.
Right. Blue vial. There it is. He brought it over to where Hawke finished carefully mixing something in a small, clear flask.
“Sorry, Sarge,” she murmured, “I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t think it was completely necessary.” She shook the flask with her thumb over the opening, then quickly grabbed the dog’s snout and dumped the contents into his mouth. She then snapped his massive jaws shut and rubbed his throat. He yelped, grimaced a few times, and glared at her with wounded pride when she let him go, but she just sat patiently and watched him. Sarge finally slumped against the wall, and she waited until he was drooling blissfully and looking remarkably like a drunken sailor. Then, she took the shears that Fenris held toward her, and carefully cradled Sarge’s head. She gently clipped and removed quills while the drowsy hound struggled to stay awake. When he did flinch or whimper, she apologized quietly to him and let him rest a little, but she continued to firmly hold his head and kept at it until all of the quills were removed. Fenris watched her handiwork with interest. He suddenly realized she was holding out her hand for the vial he still held. She finished salving the wounds while Sarge began to snore.
"That should help him stay comfortable until Beth can take a look at him.” Hawke sat back on her heels again. “Whenever that is…” The thought trailed off, and she shook her head. "At least Beth isn't the only one who knows how to ease pain." She peered at Fenris for a moment, and he wondered if she was actually offended. It must have showed on his face, because she grinned at him and winked.
"I thank the Maker every day I'm not a mage, Fenris, but that doesn't mean I'm unwilling to learn from one I trust."
"I see..." He let the thought trail off, relieved.

As far as fenris romance subject so far it is my favorite romance. I can't get through Anders but I did an izzy romance and while it is also hard won it doesn't feel as satisfying to me. I honestly think fenris cares about hawke and wants the relationship, but he is stopped by the fear of constantly being hunted. He gets so upset when those hunters find him before hadrianna. He says "I was a fool to think I was free." I think he's so upset because he allowed himself to relax, to set down roots, to care about someone and now he realizes he's in the same situation he always was. So, yes I think danarius is part of the 3 year gap. I still believe the memories are why he left, but the fact he isn't truly free until danarius is dead probably affects him not coming back for so long.
I actually appreciate the gap. It makes so much sense. It feels real, and in the end him and hawke are so close as friends and even have so much mutual respect as rivals that when he finally goes for it the "love" is more real and solid.

Mr. Emery's Jazz album is out this Saturday
Varric: Rivani, do you think if I get him really drunk he will sing at the Hang Man?
Issie: I was told they have some Qunari strength brews at the back, I will go fetch them.

In my head fenris will always be a rockstar, lol. Also, been seeing a lot of fen mods lately that give him eyeliner and the total emo look. It makes me sad... why do they force him emo! :/
Then again there are some notoriously horrid mods out there so I guess I should be gtreatful its JUST eyeliner. *sigh*
I can't mod fenris. He's perfect as he is

Hawke: I can't imagine you having trouble speaking your mind.
Aveline: It, it's different than it was with Wesley. I mean look at you and Fenris, haven't you ever had your problems?
Hawke: (has flashback of Fenris leaving after the love scene) Perhaps we're not the best example...I-I should get going, I just remembered that I had to take mother to the habidasher.
Aveline: (yelling after Hawke) But what about Donnic?
Varric: Well done Captain, it took Rivaini and I two days and enough ale to drown a horse to get her out of that mood.
Aveline: What are you talking about?
Varric: You didn't get the memo? Yes, there's a thing between Hawke and the Elf. Yes they forged the moaning statue. But something happened and now things between the two of them aren't exactly copacetic, get it?
Aveline: So what I just brought up...
Varric: Was pretty much a metaphorical kick in the balls.

It's titled watch it burn, which is pretty much the phrase that goes through my Hawke's head most often in every playthrough, in regards to Kirkwall.

I love it. Are those hawke's companions waaaay in the back there? Merrill all with her staff up like buuurn baby burn. Izzy, varric, Anders?,and aveline all uhhh crap. Then there is hawke and fenris like weell.... that went to hell, but forget it we didn't die!
It looks like everyone, is the last person Carver or Donnic? I can't tell.
(I made the image clickable to go to the big size)
From right to left, it looks like Aveline, Donnic, Merril, Anders, Isabella, and Varric. And there is so much expression in them, when you look at 'em closely. Aveline and Donnic are like "oh man, what now?" Merril is, as you said "burn baby burn" or possibly "shiny!" Anders looks like he's still half on his box of shame. Isabella is pointing and laughing, and Varric is just... observing.
Whereas Hawke is like "And now, my reward for a job well done!"

@doctor its better if fenris is there, and the "look" is priceless. Also, isabela brings it up... "so, you and fenris..." sometimes that triggers after he leaves im all "yeah was good times, course you know all about love em then leave them. Stop twisting the knife dammit!" My last playthrough was weird I actually triggered hadrianna while I was doing some other quest out in the wounded coast. I didn't have the long road yet and usually it triggers with that.
I have never gotten that! Do you have to trigger Long Road after That Night? (The only character I've ever seen that trigger for is Issy on my husband's mage. Hilarious, but I want to see the Fenris version.)
