One of the reasons I love rivalmancing Fenris with a mage is the ongoing/underlying conflict there and the opportunity to make Hawke and Fenris real foils for each other. Marric Hawke's always been happy with his magic and thinks mages should be free but was more concerned with protecting his family and staying away from templars to actually entertain the thought of doing something about it and if arguments cropped up would be more content to brush aside the issue with humour.
Growing attached to Fenris made him understand why people hurt by magic could be hostile about it beyond magic-bogyman stories and made him think about his own beliefs and solidified and reinforced them in some ways.
Some time in act1 I'm sure they must have gotten into a yelling match once, kind of a "This is what I am, it's not going to change and I'm not going to apologise or feel guilty about it!"

But yeah bringing out magic in front of Fenris while arguing with him is most likely a TERRIBLE idea. But if Marric stops joking around when he's angry he's beyond thinking about the other person's feelings or if they'll misinterpret him.
