Yes, I want Carver to say something about my relationship! It's just annoying that I just got finished waiting for patches in DA2 and now I have to wait for more in DLC. This is seriously the first time I have had to wait to play a game because the glitches left parts of the story out. Once again, a great DLC, but you'd think after working on it for 5 months they would've worked all the kinks out.

I get the feeling that Carver's not saying anything for a good reason.

Warden's Prison

Carver: So you left my sister like a coward.

Fenris: (remains silent, starts to glow slightly)

Varric: Junior, I get that most Templars are holier-than-thou. But if you don't hold your tongue, you'll be really holy.

Carver: Please, he can barely stare my sister in the- (is slammed against the wall by Fenris who has a single glowing hand raised)

Fenris: I suggest you mind your tongue, lest I tear it out.

Carver: You can't do that.

Hawke: I've seen him tear out a man's heart with his bare hands.

Carver: Please! I'll do anything you want!

Fenris: Apologize.

Caver: I'm sorry I called you a coward!

Fenris: Not to me. To your sister.

Carver: What?! Why?

Fenris: For acting like a spineless bastard on this little outing. I of course can always...

Carver: I'm sorry sister! I'm sorry that I blamed you for mother's death. and called your boyfriend a coward, and generally insulted you behind your back for the past three years!

Hawke: Apology accepted Carver. Thank you Fenris.

Fenris: (stops glowing and drops Carver on the ground) I suggest you choose your foes with greater care Templar, they will not all be as gracious as I.

On the subject of music for various times of the romance...

This just came up on shuffle on the old iPod...and this makes me think of my Hawke making the decision to leave Kirkwall for a while during the early days of the Gap.

This one does too - it's anachronistic, maybe, (and it's P!nk, so it's mildly NSFW for salty language) but it fits Hawke realizing that she was happier when she was nobody in Kirkwall, and that her life went to .... starting with Bethany's death and continuing with losing Fenris and then her mother's murder. Think of this leading into the first song I linked, maybe. (I can totally see Aniya raging in her house during this, then getting a grip on herself once she shakes off the aftereffects and leading into "Start Swimming".)

*snip*

Carver and Fenris actually like each other though. TBH I would love to see Carver be protective of his sister, and I actually think Fenris would agree with his opinion if he called him a coward - Fenris calls himself such later but just can't seem to handle it until he gets closure about his past.

For those who thought Fenris should have had more to say after "All that Remains"

The Murder of Sigrun Hawke's Mother (and What Came After)

The blood lust left me slowly.  I gazed about the stinking foundry, demonic body parts and entrails abounded.  The sickly sweet smell of dead abominations filled my nostrils and made me retch.  As my mind cleared, I could see Hawke on her knees in the dusty floor, cradling the butchered remains of her mother.  The dark magic faded, and the corpse lay still in Sigrun's arms.

Sigrun seemed stunned.  Her blonde hair was dark with sweat and blood. Her pale grey eyes were dark--her pupils so dilated, she seemed drugged. In monotone she asked Varric to find the city guard and someone who could be paid to remove the bodies to a place of burning. The dwarf returned quickly, accompanied by a guard and a man from the tavern. She gave a description of DuPuis to the guard. To the employee from the Hanged Man, she paid out coin and asked that her mother be taken to the nearest site for cremation.

When he returned with the cart, we followed the body.  It was a grim, blood soaked procession, but one not particularly rare in this hell-hole of a city.  I wondered if Varrick or Anders would suggest sending for Gamlen but neither did. A pyre was readied, and with little ceremony, Sigrun set it alight and stood silent as it burned.

The sun was beginning to rise as we trudged up the stairs toward our homes. One by one, we left Sigrun as we reached our abodes.  I was the last to leave her side.  I did so without speaking and entered the house.  Battle sore and weary, I shoudl have been able to slumber.  But I could not do so. Something deep inside me was nagging, and I could not sleep. Giving in to the irresistible, insistent demand, I dressed and walked to Hawke's home.  Bodhan allowed me inside without protest. Unusual, for the old dwarf was rather protective of his mistress.

"Where is she?" I asked.
"Upstairs, messer, " he replied.

I climbed the stairs to her room.  Her room with it's clean lines and simple order.  Her room that smelled as she did, of soap and a light scent of citrus.  Her room that reminded me of what I had thrown away.  Sigrun sat on the edge of the bed, readied for sleep. She looked at me, her eyes hollow and empty.  Now that I was here, I was unsure. This woman was the reason I was in turmoil.  For my own peace of mind, I should have stayed away. Yet, I was here.  I had to be here. But I knew not what to do.  "Hawke, I don't know what to say...."I began.

"Was it my fault?" She asked, uncertain in tone, almost childlike.

"You are seeking absolution. I am not the one who can give it to you," I responded.  I turned to leave her.

"Fenris, wait,"  She whispered.

I turned back. Sigrun took a step toward me--held out her hand--pleading--her eyes begging for what she could not demand.  Without a word,  I took her into my arms. For a moment, she stood silent and straight, but then a soft, wailing moan rose from inside her, a keening sound that grew more pain-filled with each breath. She sagged in my arms.  Were it not for the agonized sounds, I would have thought she fainted.  As gently as I could, I dragged us both to a chair.

I held her on my lap and stroked her back as she sobbed.  I murmured inconsequential words in languages I thought I'd forgotten. I brushed hair away from her face. Until that time, I did not think that Sigrun allowed pain or sadness to touch her. She was always so strong.  So sure. So certain. In all the horrors we had dealt with, all the blood, all the death, I had not seen her crushed or broken.

Yet now, she was utterly and completely helpless in my arms.  Crying, not only for her mother, but for everything she had lost.  Home, father, siblings, country.  Crying for the dead, for the missing, for the past.

It occurred to me for the first time that my own amnesia was, in some dark way, a blessing.  I could not count my own losses, true, but  because I did not remember them, they could not wound me thus.

I held Sigrun, arms and back aching, I held her close.  Minutes, hours, I held Sigrun until the tears stopped and I realized that she had fallen asleep.  I managed to get her to the bed and lay her down.  I debated.  The wisest thing was to leave.  But I would not leave her vulnerable and alone in that terrible time. I could pretend--to her if not myself--that I stayed for friendship's sake...but I knew otherwise.  I could no more have left her there that I could fail to breathe. I stretched out beside her to watch her sleep. I myself, fell to slumber.

When I woke, she was up and dressed.  I felt sheepish--I had vowed never to be in her bed again.  Yet, here I was--in a manner of speaking. Sigrun, ususally quick to take advantage of a humorous situation, did not.  I hastened to my feet.

She was herself again. Sigrun the victorious. Sigrun, the battle maiden of old.  Her emotional armor in place, her vulnerabilities tucked away.  And yet, she reached out to touch my face and stopped.  A wistful look passed briefly over her features. Then she smiled. "You should not have been so kind to me, my love." She said. "You give me hope that some day you will return to me."

Damn her! Damn her!  I should have shouted some irredeemably insulting remark.  I should have cut her with words sharper than my sword.  But I did not.  I could not. Sigrun knew me too well.  She certainly loved me too much. And, Maker help me, I was beginning to understand how much I loved her.

@Carmen - nicely done! Lots of good stuff on here lately. (We had a lull...I was getting a little concerned! Go Legacy!)

ETA: *waves fist at Fanfiction.net - can't post my new Prologue for at another couple of hours* *sigh*

Oh well - I should probably get more written before I do that. I would submit the Prologue for the Prompt (it would work), but the only tie it has to Fenris is if you consider that he's Aniya's future LI (or one of them).)

*I* like it - I tend to write in 3rd person, because I'm not sure I can make 1st person work unless it's solely from the main character's (Hawke's in this case) POV.

I've been working on my Fenris voice as well. Thinking about doing a Fenris POV fic. It's difficult to write him. So many fics that I read just don't seem to capture him well at all. Then again as I said I'm super picky about fics I read. I realize it is hard to stick with the original character when doing an offscene scene, but so many people tend to completely change him to OOC. To sweet or saying stuff I don't believe he would. Hawke I can see saying anything because people play their Hawke's so differently, but Fenris is well... Fenris. He has speech patterns and personality and conversations that are unique to him.

I'm babbling. LOL.. Aimo's comic is excellent! When is her stuff not excellent though, LOL.

Also, does it irk anyone that when Cory says his "You all owe fealty to the Tevinter Magisters. Kneel." (parapharasing). I wanted Fenris to be like "typical magister..." or something. I just really went "oh, crap.. Fenris isn't going to like that... LOL."

I love how he goes off at Anders "You need to meet more Magisters!" His sneer is priceless. Love it!

What I find helps me most when trying to really get inside a character's head is listening to their voice files, if they are accessible.  To the point that you are thinking in their voice.  And also really listening to what they say and how they say it, picking up on where they put inflections, their vocal mannerisms, etc.  Really just learning the charcter from the source material as well as possible.  The other great aspect to this is that, in this case, you get to listen to Gideon Emery talk a lot.

My favorite character to do this with in the past was Bishop from NWN2.  Lots of heavy exhalations and "Come now"s.  Sarcasm up to eleven.  And also, Asa Seigel has one of the sexiest voices ever.

What is funny is that I literally had no freaking idea who that guy was. The first time I actually saw Gideon Emery (which was before ever playing DA2) he was playing the Irish brother of Fiona on USA's Burn Notice lmao. I had no effing clue that guy was the voice of Fenris, his voice literally sounded nothing like Fenris - even despite the whole Irish accent thing.

According to IMDB he's been on like, 2 other shows I watch..Castle & The Mentalist. I just found the clip from him on Castle lol minus irish accent his voice is so...drastically different from his Fenris voiceovers. Kind of funny.

He's incredibly versatile.  I had absolutely no idea he did the voice for Taliesin in Origins until somone pointed it.  It sounded so different!  The first time I saw him do anything was when he played the serial killer in Moonlight.  That was rather creepy, in a disturbingly sexy way.

I also go back to Fenris' short story by David Gaider and read, re-read, and re-read again to get the feel of how Fenris is written.

I've listened to like every audio file as well - multiple times. Even the Legacy banters I binged out and listen. I read the banters and pick up on how Fenris relates to others. I re-watch his cutscenes for funsies and to better understand his character developments and how he evolves over time. So yeah, it ends up being an interpretation/ individual writing thing when it comes to fanfiction though. People each have their own style and often get caught up in their own voice missing the voice of the character. I think that's why it is harder to capture someone else's characters than your own. Also, why there is so much bad fanfiction out there, LOL.

As for Gideon Emery -- he is a very good actor. His voice of Fenris is more unique and his other characters all have nuances that he plays. He is very versatile. It's the mark of a good actor. When I look at his other characters I don't see "Fenris" I see what he is playing. Yet when I look and listen to Fenris, that is all I see. So, yes he indeed suited the part well, and is versatile enough to pull it off. Bioware usually does voice acting right. Believe me it makes a huuuuuge difference to get professionals -- I've seen bad voice acting in games (think we all have) totally ruins it! Glad they went with someone so talented. I remember them saying a long time ago that they wanted Fenris to have some sort of an accent -- not a harsh accent, but a reminder that he is from Tevinter. Gideon Emery also does the qunari and arcanum lines excellently.

So I've always wondered about fenris' first language. He speaks fluent arcanum, common language, and at least some qunari. Now he states that Danarius didn't want his slaves feeling like they had worth so how did he learn 3 languages? I assume he was taught out of necessity by someone. I doubt he was schooled or anything so my guess is danarius had other slaves teach him at least the common tongue. The qunari he could have picked up in traveling and proximity to the qunari. It seems everyone in tevinter knows the ins and outs of qunari customs.

So when hawke teaches him to read it is in the common language, but potentially he could learn to read in arcanum and even some limited qunari. He would be quite the intellect for being able to do such. I was just musing on the thought.

Tevinter is probably a giant melting pot of cultures so its probably not overly rare for people to know multiple languages.

Plus being Denarius' body guard probably meant that he had to stand and listen to lots of talking and may have picked some stuff up there.

Counting:
Common tounge- speak/learn to read
Some Elven- Enough to catch the main words (taking to the Dalish)
Tevinter
Qunari.

Not bad!
I never could learn any languages besides english... while my whole family is bilingual or tri-lingual in the case of my sister (english, French, and Spanish).
Though I wonder if he just knows the main phrases in Qunari/Elven.

Still is better then I can ever manage.

I would say that he has very dry - a funny but  dry wit. Alot of the times in conversations he sound rather just  tired  and drained emotional.   Like he wants to move on but does not know  how to move on.

Lol, I have no idea if it has anything to do with... anything, but I was listening to banter and there was a line "I guess even the taint brigade draws the line at abominations." I was like... awww I want Fenris thread to have a special name so we can get a shout out too. I am well aware that he wasn't purposly giving the Anders thread a shout out, and, obviously he has never read the thread cause most people seem pretty okay with Justice. Still it made me giddy. Cause I'm strange.

I wouldn't say I am okay with Justice - Its more of I don't have enough infomation  on Fade  or the Spirits for there to classicifition.  The only two spirits we have seen so  far have been Wynn and Anders.

I would guess that is how he learned multiple languages.  Either that or Denarius had him taught, so he could eavesdrop on what people would think are private conversations.   But he obviously was born with the gift of being able to learn some many lanugages.   There are many people who can learn multiple languages with little effort.  Especially if they are learn when they are young.  I am not one.  I struggled with French.:crying:  I wish it came naturally to me.

Gideon Emery's VO talent is amazing. He really can change his voice and make totally different sounding characters. He was an excellent choice for Fenris. That deep voice is Fenris.

It's possible that people in Tevinter just speak Arcanum and Common (Common is used mainly for international commerce, I assume, so it makes sense, seeing as Tevinter seems to have a booming slave trade) and any kid growing up in an environment like that would just naturtally pick up both.  I knew a girl in high school whose parents were Russian and she had been bilingual for as long as she could remember.  Fenris may not have had a first language, but first languages.  As for the Qunari, that's just a product of his time in Seheron I suspect.  In  any sort of immersion situation you pretty much HAVE to learn at least some of the language to get by.  I don't think his knowing multiple languages marks him a gifted linguist or anything, it's more likely just a product of his life experience.  Which is not to say he's not an intellect, he certainly comes off as a highly intelligent person.  Shame he's been educationally deprived. :(
