I often wonder how the tournament and prize boon would have played out.

How would it have been advertised?

Who would it have been open to? Would it have been open, as in, all villagers, neighbouring villages, slaves etc could have entered. I wonder if it was a "local" tournament, if then Leto was forced to fight and/or kill people he knew.

Would there have been qualifying rounds/bouts, leading onto a final between Leto and A.N Other.

Were the bouts "to the death" and public? (a bit like gladiator fights).

Over how long a time period would the tournament have been held?

I'm trying to imagine Leto preparing for the onset of the tournament, it's hard to imagine him not Fenris. Would he have been nervous, or perhaps confident. Having already decided what his boon would be on winning, would that strengthen and drive him mentally? If, he was indeed aware, at least in part, of his end of the bargain, how would that have played on him. Did it occur to him that he may not be able to cope with the outcome or was the boon, in his mind, all that mattered.

Gah! I have so many questions lol. Just when my wee brain calms down, you guys start another fantastic topic and the cogs start whirring again Posted Image

-passes round the coffee and cakes- Have a good day all!!

Alrighty, I've got a question.

I could have -sworn- that in the act 3 QB with Bela that there's a LI option. I know there's one for Anders "What about Anders?" "Bring him along, we'll find some use for him, I'm sure *belasmirk*""..

So why isn't there one for Fenris. I thought there was, in fact I could have sworn there was... but now there's not. In fact I replayed half of act three because I didn't get the that dialog option, only to find out there's still no dialog option... and I swear there used to be one!

AHMG, someone find out for meeeeeeee.

I don't remember there being an dialogue option for What about Fenris, but I haven't played in awhile so I might be mis-remembering :pinched:.  The Fenris romance must be re-connected in the third act so maybe the writers weren't sure if the romance would be on by then or it's another dialogue trigger that isn't flagging right.

Which makes me believe this is the soul reason why the Legacy banters aren't working. Because Merrill, and Anders both get the middle "What about X" Dialog when she asks you to run away on her ship with her, and I really do believe that before the patches there was one for Fenris too. I can understand why Seb doesn't, since he's not a "real romance" in game play terms, but why wouldn't it apear for a "reconnected romance'd Fenris"?

DEAR BIOWARE, I BET THIS IS WHERE THE PROBLEM'S HIDING. The rest of the game's not recognising the relationship (see, a flag isn't.. flagging..). PLZ FIX NAO, LUV - FENRIS FANS.

I adorrre Ultipup. I think that Ulti and Heidenreich are two of the best writers here. The art of getting a point across in the shortest possible time is not an easy one. And some people just have a natural knack for it. When Ulti says they are going to do Origins over to play DA2 over and Heiden answers simply with What? and Ulti says they want some things to be different for the playthu and "I wanna be queen," was epic. I am serious. I am still thinking about that conversation and loving it. And when Ulti talks about Fenris and other characters being much better than "drunken elf" and "human male #26". The thing is, these people don't always realize that they're good writers.

I always thought Danarius did protect Leto to a point. Uhg, I wish I could remember when exactly but Fenris talks about abuses laid upon him when Danrius wasn't there to leash his pet. Unless my brain had fabricated that.

I think that's implied when he discusses how Hadriana treated him, but I don't think it's explicitly stated. I could be wrong, though.

Fleshdress wrote...
To me he understands Oranas mindset that everything was 'fine' as long as they weren't being sacrificed. Plus I doubt the strong survival instinct was newly born. When his life was hard and there is a chance for impoval I doubt he wish washed about wanting to stay with his slave friends. Loneliness does not seem to be a deterrant as Fenris, he actually refuses to get closer to his new friends and lover. I have a feeling as a slave he was loyal to his family. full stop. He may have had buddies he worked with but no one worth staying behind is a crappier life for. Who knows maybe Leto was a body slave that could fight... the promise of an elite bodyguard position would look pretty damn good then and it would explain Danarius' *cough*intimate*cough* tendencies,

*nods*  I also think that meeting Orana shows Fenris how far he's come since being locked into that mindset himself. (To me, a little of his voice tone/body language says, 'I can't believe I once felt that way but I completely sympathize with her - I've been there.') I also think that Fenris, at least,  if not Leto, is a realist. In the Gaider short story and in Fenris's early conversations, he's clearly a lone wolf (no pun intended).  He can outgrow it, but...at first, it's true.

It could be that Leto had fully accepted the odds of seeing his family again, even if they were freed, was practically nil, so he was planning on only having to look out for Leto.  It's honestly not like he could plan on having a lifelong relationship with them anyway; slaves got sold/traded/or worse and families got broken up all the time, at least in the Old South, and I can't imagine any other slavery-friendly cultures seeing it any differently.

Edit: Hmm, we missed our ToP art. I'm going to stick to classics today - here's an Aimo that I liked quite a bit.

I don't think Fenris knew what the ritual entailed per se: I see it more like this. Danarius was holding a competition, the winner gets a boon and some special markings, and he'll become Danarius's valued bodyguard. Yes you might ask "what markings?" but honestly, there are tattoos enough in Thedas that have mystical-ish powers, having something like that wouldn't be exceptionally suspicious.

Slave pecking order is definitely a thing, as is servant pecking order. There's all sorts of stuff about field slaves versus house slaves in old historical accounts of the south, and that's the kind of transition I think Fenris was anticipating: better food, better quarters, more respect from his fellow slaves. I was reading a story recently about this serving girl who was upjumped from a menial errand girl and beggar to a proper lady's maid, and that's the kind of thing I'm thinking of... only for a slave rather than a servant, of course.

I agree.  Fenris or really Leto would see it has a chance to provide a better life for his family and himself.  He probably wouldn't understand or have been told everything that was involved.  It was a shot at a better life.  Of course the game keeps everything nice and vague.  So we have to fill the gaps ourselves.  I would love to know what the ritual was and how it was done.  More DLC material!

Been going through dialogues and cut scenes again just in case I missed something.

Fenris talks about abuses laid upon him when Danrius wasn't there to leash his pet. Unless my brain had fabricated that.

As far as this is concerned Fleshy the only hints we ever get are about what he says about Hadrianna specifically, how he was a slave and "propped up the furniture if so inclined," how Danarius used him to intimidate his guests "A little Fear with your wine.." Plenty of hints and examples of Danarius' depravity where you can assume abuse from. As said if he let Hadrianna (his apprentice) abuse him in such ways why would he lavish affections and special treatments on him?

I have to squelch this incredibly personal gut reaction during the Act 3 scene with Danarius. It is extremely hard for me to see that scene objectively and I have not felt that way about something in a Loong, Looong time. I admit this because it is one of the reasons I do love the character so much.

Enough gush... Leto as we have touched on before was 1.) born as a slave 2.) May or may not have belonged to Danarius 3.) lived with or at least was around his mother/sister/family 4.) Competed for boon 5.) Name literally means "to make joyful" -- perhaps a mark on disposition?

I can piece together a bit of Leto from that.. It depends on willingness again to believe whether or not he competed for markings or boon or both. Danarius says "You once had affection for me..." (I threw up a litte) -- and that could have been literally a slave's affection (like Orana) or a joke at Fenris' expense because Danarius is, after all, a giant creeper. If he owned Leto and Leto might actually have had that slave's "affection" for him, then I could possibly get on board that he wanted to compete for markings and to be bodyguard and boon.

However, I hate to go there because when I see Danarius I don't see him giving a care as to offer anything about the ritual or the markings. Perhaps the "job" as the bodyguard, but not the ritual. I also still don't know if I can get on board with the fact that Leto wanted a "better station" at the expense of everything he knew already. I think his motivation would be to free his sister/mother, but I don't think he could be so ambitious as to want power or position or prestige for himself.

Perhaps he thought it might be a win/win thing -- If he survived the competition (because I'm totally thinking magisters would get off on betting their 'best' slaves against each other in some to the death competition) -- then he would have been granted a boon and he would be able to live with being separated from his family because he now would be in a "higher" position. I'm still not sure what the hierarchy is.. but since "none he so valued as much as me" is a direct quote, I won't deny that bodyguards with markings who are "few in the Imperium" are pretty high up there when it comes to slave pecking order. So far up there in fact that it would have completely isolated him, but at least his family is free and he is doing something besides *insert lowest slave job you can think of here*

Someone asked Gaider if we would ever get a backstory on Fenris or Leto -- He replied that Fenris would most likely just wish to "move on" and not ever care to live in the past or write his memoirs or anything such as that. I guess the world will never know who Leto is.

Still, this image still haunts my mind of him.

Also, I apparently have magical powers to transmit disease through computers? OMG... *evil laugh* the possibilities!! LOL, I'm sorry Fleshy!! Get better soon. I'm still *snifflecoughing* too, but getting better.

Well it wouldn't be the first time my brain has attempted to fill in gaps. Using Fenris as intimidation is offensive but not really depraved. I always got the impression that the propped up furniture was an example of how far slavery could go if a master wills it, not something he every truely did, but my mind also likes to protects itself so...

I am not saying he loved Fenris or treated him like a member of the family, I assume more that he was a favorite slave and got more allowances then others. I imagine Leto with a bit of Stockholm Syndrome, perhaps Danarius treated him badly, but less badly then the others and even sometimes rewardingly. When all you know is cruelty, the hand that feeds you, even if it feeds you cruelly, is still the hand you love the best.

Would the mark of disposition in the name Leto mean he was a joyful or kind child or was it another example of cruelty by masters giving him a name that alludes to a role is life. To make people joyful. to preform a service.

I think his motivation would be to free his sister/mother, but I don't think he could be so ambitious as to want power or position or prestige for himself.

Yet when we see him as Fenris he has that ambition for power. A drive to be something more then what he was. I doubt Danarius was super inclined to indulge what was going on, but to offer a slave, someone who has nothing, power? I doubt they would question a whole lot what form that power would come in, or anything along that vein. I stick to my opinion that outside his family Fenris had no allusions to frienships. The chance to move forward comes in many forms, betraying a fellow is one of them. I think slavery is one of the fer minorities where there is no solidarity.

So far up there in fact that it would have completely isolated him, but at least his family is free and he is doing something besides *insert lowest slave job you can think of here*

Exactly that. To be a slave, but to have value, worth. I very much see it as him freeing his family as priority number one, and I assume he lived with Danarius before the ritual so he already was a prized slave, which is why he was entered as a combatant, I doubt he had much hope for being free himself and without mage skills being a free elf in Tevinter isprobably not fun anyways. So he frees his sister and mother with the expectation that she will become an apprentice or magister now that she isn't a slave, he himself is left behinde in a life he has already accepted and offered an opportunity to become the best. I don't see many people turning the offer down.

Someone asked Gaider if we would ever get a backstory on Fenris or Leto -- He replied that Fenris would most likely just wish to "move on" and not ever care to live in the past or write his memoirs or anything such as that. I guess the world will never know who Leto is.

I would love to get aglimpse into his past, unfortunatly I also love the opportunity to make it what you want because there are so many ways to interpret his scenes. He is a writers dream character.

I'm not sure if the romance is ever really "off", at least i really don't want to think that. wouldn't you guys rather believe that it's still on because he talks about it with Merill? And there's that scene where Isabella outright says she knows about Hawke and Fenris. This is all after he walks out. But he's wearing the Favors! The candle is burning strong, and you guys even said the only reason he's doing that is because he's a hunted man and doesn't want to put Hawke in danger. I know he tells Anders it's over but, then he implies to Anders he still loves Hawke.

But there are inconsistencies in the romance. The ending is what sealed the deal for me, truly. And someone has tr-uulll-y put thought into what women want in a romance. Bravo. Seriously. If that was David Gaider or, whoever has to do with these things I really love it. It's why I was so confused by the codex. It just didn't seem very romantic, and the one with Anders... why wouldn't Hawke know that Anders was up to something after 3 years of living with him. i'm truly not meaning to brag but I would know. So why wouldn't my character?

Feel free to respond anyone, I promise i won't be defensive, I'm done with that. Rei Silver, for example. I know, I know, one interaction with him (if that), and I'm ready to bear his children. ;-)

Flllleshdress. I'm very happy for you. I love how you guys will just say every last single thing that's on your mind :-). It makes me laugh. Most of the time. I loved that conversation where you guys were talking about your character looking fat, etc. That really made me laugh. I have allergies too. It's raining here in Maryland now, but I actually love overcast and rainy days here because we don't get them too often.

I'm sure Fenris wants all you guys to feel better :-)

@ SurrealSadi

Good.  Thanks, thats really helpful information.  I'm all with that.  Why would Fenris want to talk about that horrible experience?  Nothing is worth the pain he had to go through.  I agree with Omearee in that maybe he didn't know what he was getting into.  How could his mother and sister let him go through with that?  Especially if he was still a child.  Nothing is worth what they did to him by allowing him to go through with that.

Perhaps Fenris will get his memories back bit by bit.  But it will be terrible for him and if that happens it will be healthy for him to talk with Hawke about it, now that he's come to grips with his feelings for her.  But I'm ok with just letting it go too.  I don't particularly care for that part of the story anyway.

I think Fenris does tell us about his past in a backward sort of way. I recently watched a Eurkea episode where a guest character had his memory wiped, but the emotions behind the memory remained as emotions are stored in a different part of the brain than memories. So, even though Fenris' memories may never come back the emotions, especially the strong ones, tell of his past. We know he hates magisters and in particular Danarius. The final straw was probably the fog warriors, but that kind of hatred doesn't come from one incident. There must have been something else, perhaps a series of events that laid the foundation of his hatred and distrust.

Am I the only one who wants to leave the past in the past? Yes Fenris had a ****ty life and mages made it that way. I'm good with that now. I'd rather see Fenris open up as a character, find new opinions, interests, become his own person. For all I care, Leto died during the ritual. Only Fenris remains. And it is Fenris that I want to see develop more.

...

You do realise that its just a discussion right? Sometimes thinking about the past life of a character helps them become more solid in the timeline we know them as. So, by pondering what his life could have been like, we can better understand his reaction to slowly gaining his memory back.

When he see's his sister, he fills in the blanks that have otherwise illuded him. It wouldn't suprise me if one of the reasons he seems to settle down and is able to let Hawke back into his life is because through the encounter he gained a portion of his old memories, at least enough to sooth his mind about being a good enough person for her/him.

Seeing his sister, learning that he fought for the boon that free'd his family from slavery.. this could very well lead to him coming to the conclusion that he is, indeed, a man worthy of someone like Hawke.

Maybe his past life was filled with love and laughter, even despite all the pain and hardships of slavery. He obviously loved his family, and because of his encounter with Varania, he again remembers them and that he had been worthy of being loved.

Ulti and Heidenn both have a good point. It's the idea that any of the discussion will turn into anything actual...it's too remote. And it's too far away from the main storyline. I personally found the whole sister thing a bit contrived and if David Gaider is such a good writer then he might have just slid that in there to give Fenris any kind of past or purpose at all, in the sense that, he needs to have a goal he's trying to see through before he can open himself up to Hawke. Or he might have been under some serious deadline pressure. We'll probably never know for sure.

"hands clapping" - I applaud you!  I completely agree!!!

Well, yes, considering this is a discussion thread. And I gave my own two cents. I never disowned any one else's ideas about Fenris. I merely said that I personally do not care about Fenris's past. What is important to me has already been said.

And I believe Fenris would agree with me. He is not one to dwell on the past. In fact, he never tries to figure things out until his past presents itself before him. He only wanted to kill Danarius until Hadriana told him he had a sister. After finding his sister and letting her live to tell him a bit more, he finds the past to be hurtful and alarming. He does not try to think more about it, instead choosing to move forward with Hawke.

Fenris knows enough to satisfy himself. If there is more, he shows he does not want to know more. If his past keeps haunting him, he will no doubt try to know why so he can stop it. The past, for a lack of a better phrase, is in the past. It is Fenris who should be proving himself, not Leto.

Where Leto died, Fenris was born. I only know Fenris and I only care about Fenris. That, my fair comrade, is my personal opinion.
