Am I the only one who wants to leave the past in the past? Yes Fenris had a ****ty life and mages made it that way. I'm good with that now. I'd rather see Fenris open up as a character, find new opinions, interests, become his own person. For all I care, Leto died during the ritual. Only Fenris remains. And it is Fenris that I want to see develop more.
"hands clapping" - I applaud you! I completely agree!!!
...
You do realise that its just a discussion right? Sometimes thinking about the past life of a character helps them become more solid in the timeline we know them as. So, by pondering what his life could have been like, we can better understand his reaction to slowly gaining his memory back.
When he see's his sister, he fills in the blanks that have otherwise illuded him. It wouldn't suprise me if one of the reasons he seems to settle down and is able to let Hawke back into his life is because through the encounter he gained a portion of his old memories, at least enough to sooth his mind about being a good enough person for her/him.
Seeing his sister, learning that he fought for the boon that free'd his family from slavery.. this could very well lead to him coming to the conclusion that he is, indeed, a man worthy of someone like Hawke.
Maybe his past life was filled with love and laughter, even despite all the pain and hardships of slavery. He obviously loved his family, and because of his encounter with Varania, he again remembers them and that he had been worthy of being loved.
See? Character Analasis isn't a bad thing.
Well, yes, considering this is a discussion thread. And I gave my own two cents. I never disowned any one else's ideas about Fenris. I merely said that I personally do not care about Fenris's past. What is important to me has already been said.
*snip meat and potatos!*
Where Leto died, Fenris was born. I only know Fenris and I only care about Fenris. That, my fair comrade, is my personal opinion.
*takes a nice, slow breath.*
Spending the last hour writing a "how to rival fenris to 50% in act one" guide for the last hour and not even being close to done has made me cranky.. so I will not ask you, with clenched teeth, why you're bothering to participate in a discussion thread if you don't want to... discuss.. <_<
Instead, I will give you a cookie, and go back to my editing.

I think Ulti wants to talk about things or they wouldn't be here. And you two...actually seem to have quite an interactive chemistry. I've liked listening to your conversations. You guys actually compliment each other.
I wish what happened hadn't happened. I wish we'd just missed each other. But we didn't and we mutually misunderstood each other. I like you. Any mention of you I've made from the past I've taken down. Look and see. It wasn't your fault. Please consider being my friend. You don't have to respond to this now if you don't feel like it, I'll understand.

This is silly. I do not wish to argue. Can we guess what color Fenris's underclothes are? That's much more fun.
Totally red. Has to be.
Seriously though I'm just cranky because I'm -still- editing, and its almost two hours later. <_< Why I ever decided to actually do this is beyond me.. but, I'm tired of having to pm it to people twice a week soooooooo

Where Leto died, Fenris was born. I only know Fenris and I only care about Fenris.
If you wish to to make a Fenris from scratch, first you must invent the universe.
For me, Fenris's past is interesting because he doesn't exist in a vacuum. If you truly believe Fenris was born during that ritual, then Danarius did nothing wrong, burning that Lyrium into his skin... in fact, he created the very thing you love, conjured it out of thin air and nothing of value was lost. If Fenris doesn't wish himself dead, then Danarius did him a favor, by "creating" him. Without Leto, Fenris is a thing that Danarius gave birth to, plain and simple.
Now I don't think Danarius has the ability to breathe life into clay, and I don't think that Fenris is Galatea, Fenris must have been built from something, and by something I mean everything. First you must invent the universe. First you must understand slavery and magic and blood sacrifice and racism and all those things. You must, to some extent, understand Leto. I suppose you can just pick a point in time and say "history started HERE" but why? Why limit yourself in that way? It'd be like me saying "America is the best country, so I'm going to ignore all world history that happened before 1776!" If I did that, I wouldn't know how the invention of the printing press hugely broadened literacy, and how that spread the way for the kind of communication that created the potential for more participatory governments.
Ok, that got a bit off the rails, but you know me. I believe everything in the universe is fundamentally connected, so the more you understand about the universe, the more you understand about any single thing in particular. The closer the new things you understand are to the thing you're trying to look at, the more likely they are to be relevant. And if one of the things you're looking at is actually the primary ingredient of the thing you're concerned about... well then, understanding it is pretty important, I think.
If you wish to make a Fenris from scratch, subject one Leto to a life of slavery, add pain and power, and bake in the excesses of a caste-based aristocracy for 5-15 years (ovens may differ, take your Fenris out when he becomes golden brown and starts to glow). Garnish with a taste of freedom, then release out into the wild for three years. If it never comes back, it was never yours to begin with.

That or the writers never thought of this and it is simply left in the dark recesses of our minds. Where we keep this alive.

Heh, I was wondering that too. *passes out tea and cakes*
It's a discussion. We can disagree - but at the end of the day, at least it was on topic discussion.

That was brilliant.
And I think that picture broke my brain. (In a good way, of course.)

Welcome, by the way. I'm afraid I have tea and cakes tonight, not cookies, but there's usually no shortage around here.
I dunno - I think I have to agree with green. Or black - that would just be...striking. [/gutter district]
