EDIT: Just read on the Dragon Age Wiki that he accepts it if he's friends with Hawke. But it also says the sword is of much better quality if you keep it. So, would it be better to keep the sword and then equip him with it, seeing as it'd be much stronger?

He does accept it if you're friends with him.(And I love that scene where you first see him gazing out the window!)

Someone did a gorgeous fan art of that but I can't find it on DA...

Yeah... it's what I've been doing in every playthrough, but only because I was terrified of him yelling at me like he did in my first playthrough:P

I found by the time I picked up the sword to give to him/equip, he already had much better weapons to use, and I usually end up selling it!

Arcane_Solona,

the same thing happened to me with Aveline. The first time I gave her her shield she haaaated it. It turns out that in her case I think I just picked the wrong dialog responses. My relationship with Fenris has never, from the moment I laid eyes on him been in the red. This being the case, having Merrill around meant she was in the red. She hated everything I gave her and she despised me. It hurt because she told me to get lost, and giving her gifts just gave me more rivalry points. She hated me so much she wouldn't talk to me anymore.

I thought I was courting Sebastian my first playthrough. The hint book says you can't flirt with anyone or Sebastian won't get romantic with you. I was so taken by Fenris from the get go it was soooo hard not to pick the flirting options, and then when I went back and did I... that was it for me. It's a funny story because the entire reason why I gave in was because I had accidentally clicked on a flirt option for Aveline, of all people. So I thought, I can't take it any more, went and did Questioning Beliefs with Fenris and I was his from then on. I did really like the Anders midstage relationship part and that he moves in with you. From character analysis it fits that Hawke would want to give Fenris his freedom and not tie his hands by demanding he move in with her right away.

I loved that Anders actually appears in your apartment from Act Three on. It bothers me that he's not there when you finish the game and are taken back to Hawke's estate to get the downloadable content. It is easy to side with Fenris if you're courting Sebastian, which I was. If you court Anders that's a different story, but I liked Fenris so much from the beginning it wasn't hard for me even as a mage, to do what he wanted.

Don't take me the wrong way...this is just information. Pleaaase don't think I'm any threat to your own love for Fenris. Your expressed love for him is...wonderful. I couldn't say it better myself and lets face it. Sometimes Fenris's dislike of mages comes across as a little over the top. When he appears in Hawke's house and is talking with the Mabari, I got so offended I wanted to break up with him, and I did in a sense, because I switched back to Anders, who says funny sweet things to the dog even though he's a cat person. Also, people comment on what he says after the death of Leandra as being deep and intelligent, when I found him to be insensitive. I always pick the diplomatic option there because that's the way to get rid of him the quickest in that scene. Again don't get me wrong, I'm glad he even shows up to try to comfort you. He just does not, in fact, do a very good job of it. The Anders comforting scene is a winner, on the other hand. I was really quite torn up for some time about who to choose. Again, it's the inambiguety of the ending, and that wonderful kiss that seals the deal for me.

Thank you everyone for letting me know about the sword! I just had always been giving it to him. That's interesting, I'll have to keep it in mind. I just always do what I think he'll like because I'm kind of his slave.

Ok, ok, Gideon Emery voice update...

he's someone in the tavern at night too. i think he's the blonde guy sitting at the table right as you walk in. Keep your ear out... i think he starts by saying "I hear the Champion of Kirkwall, etc.etc.etc."

Yeah, this would need to be in the third Act, when he's going on and on about "the Champion".

Gah, I'm going nuts trying to find a dialogue reference, with no success. Where and under what conditions does Fenris say he doesn't like fish? No, it isn't about anchovies, it's about Hawke requesting a trip to the Docks because he wants fish for lunch. This is probably the stupidest request I have made on this thread, but would somebody mind humoring me?

I think it's when you do the Gamlen quest for Charade and you step into the docks to look through the crates and he says something alone the lines of "Blech, Fish. Lets do this quickly."

I don't think this means he hates fish though, I mean I looove fish and I hate the smell of the fish markets and even sometimes the Ocean.

He might hate fish - seems it would be a cheap thing to serve slaves and perhaps it reminds him of that.

Ah, so it's Smetty's Fish Warehouse, then? Like Varric's "So, we're searching for one crate in a warehouse full of dead fish?"

In that case, then, I don't need to bother making Fenris protest a trip to the Docks. If it was an essential part of his character, I'd work it in, but if it's just a "OMG, fish warehouse! Gross!" thing like the other companions do, there's no need.

Thanks!

When you walk into Smetty's Fish Guttery, Fenris sais "Fish, Fish, and More Fish. Pfhech! *BIG SIGH* Let's just get this over with."

Lending that whole, Fenris must not like fish very much... thing :innocent:

I actually went digging looking for them, but they're so lost in the shuffle of conversation that I couldnt' find it. I'm sure it couldn't hurt to keep doing it/post them again :)

I definitely am, but started school and am not writing until I can type two-handed again. Can't speak for others though, and if you'd rather not, it's appreciated that you've done it so well for so long!

I can't believe I missed that! Oh my god! I always knew Fenris has a particular dislike for fish (character trivia on Dragon Age Wiki) but I never heard him comment about it in the game. I must've done that quest before recruiting him, because I NEVER embark on a quest without him as a party member. He is literally permanent with me. Sigh... I guess this means its time for a youtube search. (I have had an INTENSE dislike for fish ever since I was born so, this is a pleasant suprise!)

You know what really annoys me about this romance scene? The kiss. That first kiss Hawke initiates after being shoved against the wall by Fenris. That kiss is so off, so absolutely glithced (she kisses his chin, for Heaven's sake!), it never fails to annoy and disappoint me. I mean, the graphic designers are AMAZING in every other aspect of the game, why can't they be just as brilliant in the kissing department?

@ Berelinde and anyone else who is interested:

The fish dialog at Smetty's Fish guttery is soooo worth hearing. Fenris won't mind. Take him there. If you love Gideon's voice... see I'm obsessed with his voice. There's just something about it that drives me mad, crazy, in love.

He will say this inside the Guttery. "Fish, fish, fish and more fish", then as Fleshdress aptly puts it, "Blech." and then, he audibly takes this really cute breath before saying, "Let's look for those crates."

It's one of my favorite things he says, next to the love dialog.

oh my gosh I hadn't seen Heiden's post. yes, it is more like a "Pfhech," that is great Heiden! It's not an easy sound to imitate, and it's a perfect example of the inimitable Gideon :-)

Thank you, Arcane_Solona for that link.

Well let's start something interesting!  Thoughts?  Fenris as a mage?  Finds out after DA2??  Danarius was actually his father?  Any of this?  :D

That fish line always makes me laugh .  I have always hated the smell of fish too (especially now I'm a vegetarian).  It sounds like something I would have said when I was younger.
