Arcane_Solona,
the same thing happened to me with Aveline. The first time I gave her her shield she haaaated it. It turns out that in her case I think I just picked the wrong dialog responses. My relationship with Fenris has never, from the moment I laid eyes on him been in the red. This being the case, having Merrill around meant she was in the red. She hated everything I gave her and she despised me. It hurt because she told me to get lost, and giving her gifts just gave me more rivalry points. She hated me so much she wouldn't talk to me anymore.
I thought I was courting Sebastian my first playthrough. The hint book says you can't flirt with anyone or Sebastian won't get romantic with you. I was so taken by Fenris from the get go it was soooo hard not to pick the flirting options, and then when I went back and did I... that was it for me. It's a funny story because the entire reason why I gave in was because I had accidentally clicked on a flirt option for Aveline, of all people. So I thought, I can't take it any more, went and did Questioning Beliefs with Fenris and I was his from then on. I did really like the Anders midstage relationship part and that he moves in with you. From character analysis it fits that Hawke would want to give Fenris his freedom and not tie his hands by demanding he move in with her right away.
I loved that Anders actually appears in your apartment from Act Three on. It bothers me that he's not there when you finish the game and are taken back to Hawke's estate to get the downloadable content. It is easy to side with Fenris if you're courting Sebastian, which I was. If you court Anders that's a different story, but I liked Fenris so much from the beginning it wasn't hard for me even as a mage, to do what he wanted.
Don't take me the wrong way...this is just information. Pleaaase don't think I'm any threat to your own love for Fenris. Your expressed love for him is...wonderful. I couldn't say it better myself and lets face it. Sometimes Fenris's dislike of mages comes across as a little over the top. When he appears in Hawke's house and is talking with the Mabari, I got so offended I wanted to break up with him, and I did in a sense, because I switched back to Anders, who says funny sweet things to the dog even though he's a cat person. Also, people comment on what he says after the death of Leandra as being deep and intelligent, when I found him to be insensitive. I always pick the diplomatic option there because that's the way to get rid of him the quickest in that scene. Again don't get me wrong, I'm glad he even shows up to try to comfort you. He just does not, in fact, do a very good job of it. The Anders comforting scene is a winner, on the other hand. I was really quite torn up for some time about who to choose. Again, it's the inambiguety of the ending, and that wonderful kiss that seals the deal for me.
Thank you everyone for letting me know about the sword! I just had always been giving it to him. That's interesting, I'll have to keep it in mind. I just always do what I think he'll like because I'm kind of his slave.
