I agree here. I don't think he knows much about Dalish other than what a city elf would know. "Shemlen" is a pretty common word heard among elves and humans. He does say something about the Halla flag outside the Dalish camp. He remarks about the Dalish only a couple of times, mostly at how they are arrogant and he doesn't care for them. I think he has been exposed to Dalish in his travels, but I don't think Elven is in his repetoire of languages.
It isn't in anyone's, in a way. Even the Dalish only have fragments of the language, which was pretty much lost as a daily spoken language after the fall of Arlathan. I doubt he knows any more than most city elves do what "shemlen" actually means; like the tradition of the vhenedahl, it's something they cling do but have lost the context of.

It was wonderful!
And when I saw Tallis frolicking in dragon blood, I immediately thought of this:

by arylas.
Shame I didn't get to play Fenris when he came to rescue me!

The strange thing is that the moment I saw that Tallis was wearing shoes my mind went 'An elf with shoes? That's just wrong, it looks ridiculous!'. xDSer Bard wrote...
I could easily be wrong about this but didn't DG like the shoelessness on Fenris but not that it became standard for all elves?
Love the top of the page pictures (especially the one from the previous page).

I post the frolicking picture is because it was what I thought when I watch Tallis dance XD

Funny thing is, DG actually doesn't like the fact that Fenris was made not to wear shoes. I don't get it, really. Why no shoes?
I guess to make the elves even more distinct from humans. Doesn't make much sense to me, though, especially if you try to make it retroactive. Whenever I try to think of my Tabris elf going barefoot, I think about all of the broken cobblestones and standing pools of fetid water in the Denerim Alienage, and...ew.

I don't like shoelessness. Maybe it makes sense for the Dalish... being closer to nature or something (I've always gotten that vibe from them) but Fenris should definitely get himself some good ol' boots. With all that travelling and running, he needs them!
@Fleshdress LOL at the foot kink! I imagine Fenris would've gotten himself some boots when he escaped, no? He would look so HOT in a pair of bad-ass boots.

OH, and shoes. I forgot to check those elves at the parties, did they wear shoes?

My guess is someone on the art team has a thing for feet XP or wants the fans to develop things for feet. I must admit after so long looking at Fenris in his default outfit and going over it for reference and drawing him... I can't imagine him with shoes XD well I can.... but look at his cute little toes!

that and his leggings make me think of dancers and ... yeah... it is definitely form over function

Of course, it makes even less sense for non-Dalish, so the fact that Fenris has no shoes is a mystery to me. Maybe they wanted to show off his toes? The fact that his tattoos went all the way down to his feet? I don't know.

I also have a thing for his eyes, as you can probably tell in my signature... *sigh* So pretty...

DG actually was fighting to get Fenris some shoes, but got shot down repeatedly by the art department. I figure Tallis gets shoes because she is Qunari and less city elf? Qunari all get treated the same, so.. everyone gets shoes! It is the will of the QUN! XD
As for Fenris I don't have any clue why he would actually be shoeless. The argument usually goes that it is because of his training and how he can be more quick on his feet that way. More practiced and has more prowess with bare feet than with boots. Also, perhaps Danarius never found it necessary to keep replacing his boots and so just stopped getting him shoes or never got him shoes in the first place. Honestly, I think in the end it was just a gimmick of the design team to make Merrill and Fenris stand out a bit more uniquely from the other elves.
Orsino is part of the circle and so wears circle "uniform" attire -- which would include shoes. The rare Dalish -- who the hell knows.. maybe they just felt like taking their shoes off to wonder around camp. As for the city elves... maybe they just are too poor to afford shoes.
Fenris and Merrill is obviously choice -- they could afford shoes, LOL. I'm sure Hawke would gladly buy them shoes. Even though I don't think Fenris would ever ask for anything from Hawke, ever, as far as material items. He is shocked enough by "gifts" -- book notwithstanding, LMAO.
I am with Rei -- after drawing him and studying him I absolutely love his feet. That intricate pattern on them. The lyrium swiping behind his heel and those 3 little dots on the top. I can't imagine him WITH shoes. There are a few mods that add shoes, but I don't like mods. FENRIS PURIST right here.

Sebastian: You know, people generally wear shoes to this sort of affair.
Merrill: Really? What a strange custom! Among the Dalish, it is a mortal insult to cover your toenails in the presence of a superior.
Sebastian: (disbelieving voice) You're kidding.
Of course, this doesn't really explain why Fenris wouldn't wear them though, seeing as he's a city elf and not Dalish |D;

As for Merrill, well, what's one more oddity? Drop in the ocean, that is. But again, purely aesthetic. They could have given her sandals and not changed her look significantly, but whatever. I don't really know why I'm questioning lack of shoes in a universe featuring MASSIVE ARMOR. Or MASSIVE anything.

I just don't like Fenris mods overall, especially the ones that change his tight armour into a black jacket or a jedi outfit or something. It just makes him look weird. I don't mind re-colouring his original armour to black, though, (I haven't downloaded that though) or the minor face fix I downloaded for him so his neck markings were a bit higher quality.
Why do I not like Fenris mods? Because he's gorgeous the way he is already.

Oh, God, the jacket mod. *Shudders* And people complain that Fenris looks like he stumbled out of a JRPG to begin with.

There's apparently an explanation for the Dalish' lack of shoes! It's in a banter between Sebastian and Merrill in MotA ( around 1:33)

That also doesn't explain why a good number of Dalish do wear shoes. Also, that banter sounds like Merrill is pulling Seb's leg.
As for shoes causing Fenris pain...the rest of his clothing doesn't seem to cause him any particular discomfort, and feet are hardly the most sensitive region of the body. Heck, the most sensitive part of his feet, the insole, is covered. So if it's not painful for him to be wearing, say, a breastplate or even pants, I find it strange that it would be painful to wear shoes.

With any other character, that seems most likely. But Merrill doesn't really mess with people like that. Other people mess with Merrill. I'd guess that, at least for the Dalish, she's telling the truth.Nilfalasiel wrote...

As I said, it's a stretch. But come to think of it, I sort of like the idea of Fenris walking around in no clothes at all. They should do that.
