Not hating, but a serious question. I've been wondering this since ElfQuest back in the day, but what is the attractiveness (not just in DA, but in other fantasy realms) about elves? I just never saw the attractiveness of elves, but would he be getting the same amount of love if he were human or dwarf? As an aside, yeah, Im on the Varric thread a lot, but see him more as a bro than anything else...I just don't get the bro vibe from Fen (I guess stoicism just doesnt appeal to me).

Again, the original question (elves overall, not Fen in particular) is meant more in earnest curiousity rather than to start a character X is better than character Y argument, so please focus on the former rather than the latter

Elves in general? They're appealing if you like slender or nimble builds, and many people do. They also tend to have angular and more refined features.

Elves also have a range of associations that many find attractive: sensitivity to the natural world, a touch of otherworldliness, freedom from the more industrial attitudes of dwarfs and humans, a preference for settling and maintaining an area and its resources instead of constantly conquering and plundering, and typically a more open attitude toward sexuality.

Fenris would look handsome for a human man as well. I don't think his look would work on a dwarf.

So it's almost like the mythification of the Native Americans by Americans then (with respect to the range of associations)?

As for that last part, just after I read that, I had the image of Gimli (from the movies) as Fenris :)

Depends on personality. I could go, "I want nothing to do with this character," on screenies alone, and even with some video, but once a game comes out and I've played it, that could be my favorite character. Note that I've done this with several characters--  recently too (Perfect example was my first time through Awakening-- I nearly hauled off and killed Nathaniel based on a couple screens and his character video. At the last second, I decided to see what would happen and let him live. He turned out to be my favorite).

It works opposite as well, but with what tidbits Gaider has let out (stoic, broody) make me think I probably won't hate Fenris.

--Edit--

Also, I probably like Fenris a lot because I find his character popping up funny. When DA2 was first announced and it was clarified that Hawke was human, but gender and class could be chosen and appearance customized, I decided I would be playing a Fem!Hawke mage who would use mainly fire spells and (after a conversation with a good friend) be easily distracted by shiny objects-- if it were possible (which probably not) to do so.

Fenris, ironically enough, is shiny.

Aaaand it's harder to romance Zevran than Alistair. I would say that Alistair is easy to romance and hard to get in bed and Zevran is viceversa. But at least Zevran doesn't dump you cause you are a mage #@1&*$E!

And that's why I didn't make him king. I hadn't read any spoilers of any sort and had no idea what would happen with any decision I made, so I said, nope, sorry Ferelden; I'm stopping a Blight for you already, you can have Anora, and leave me and my templar alone.

Then he went and got himself killed.

Second playthrough? Much less tragic. . . ;)

Oh and did anyone else play a Couseland that *didn't* romance Alistair? Mine was very similar to Isabela. . .

If it's unexplored, can I exlore it?
If it's money, can I steal it?
If it's pretty, can I boink it?
If it's an adventure, can I undertake it?

I keep going off-topic.. Sorry! So, how 'bout that Fenris . . .

My very first playthrough, where I was basically going in blind, I played a Human Fighter and was going to romance Alistair, but then I got swept off my feet by Zevran.<3  In that playthrough I made Alistair king and had him marry Anora.

I love broody, but it can always be over-the-top. By the end of season four Angel, you're almost ready to stake him and have done. . .

I think in gaming it may be harder to reach that saturation point, though; unless the entire game is about Fenris, but that seems unlikely.

I don't know about the attractiveness about elves in DA, but what I think is fascinating about the classical elves (Tolkien style) is that they are these eternal beings, wise and beautiful and perfect. It's aweinspiring to try to imagine how a life with no end would look like. At least for me. Whether or not others feel the same I have no idea.

Now Fenris and the elves in DA is another matter. Here I would say we feel maybe pity for them? That Fenris is not only a second class citizen by definition, but knows only what it is like to live as a slave makes him even more intriguing and pitiful (I mean this in a good way). Honestly, I want to hug him and make his pain go away. But it seems that would just result in the opposite... :?

regarding the first part:  So you almost see elves in a similar way to vampires then (I don't mean these sparkly ones that the tweens go crazy about) with the attraction to eternal life?

regarding the second:  So it's like the typical outsider/bad boy thing?

I guess you could say that, though I think it has more to do with the fact that they've been through so much and wisened from that (at least in Tolkien's world). And I don't vampires interesting in that way at all... Well not as interesting, in any case. And about the second part: Yes, I guess you could say that. At least that's how it works for me.

On an off-topic note I would like to advise you all to see this () if you haven't already. It conatins a lot of Shepard rapefaces. :D

Me. My F!Cousland romanced Leliana.

My F!Mahariel did romance him, but she let Anora keep the stress and responsibility that comes with ruling a kingdom so that she and Alistair could run off and continue having adventures.

Come to think of it, even if you do become Alistair's queen, don't you always disappear in the epilogue of Awakening? Seems rather pointless to take the throne then.

I don't mind Fenris being somewhat stoic and broody, but it can definitely be overdone.  Lightning and Tidus come to mind as examples of what I don't want Fenris to be like.

See, I intended to romance Morrigan (which I didn't know was impossible while playing a female character until much later) simply because from the one picture I had seen before purchasing the game she seemed pretty. Then she talked and drove me so nuts that I benched her, and Alistair stole my heart away by the time we had left Ostagar.

Oh, writers. You constantly amaze and entertain.

I'm glad my comment was understood in its vague form. I enjoyed broody with Cloud, because quite honestly, he had a lot of bad happening. Its fine that Fenris will have that attitude, but I dont want it to be overdone.

As I understand it, Tolkien's elves were meant to be humans 'before the Fall' while much of the noble savage imagery given to Native Americans suggests they're untouched by the evils of civilization, so I can definitely see parallels. Especially if you're going by the more modern, liberal portrayal of them as opposed to that of the original European settlers, who tended to focus on their supposed savagery.

Also Avatar and the Na'vi catpeople.

Alright, so it wasn't just me. Was feeling sad and alone. ;) Just seems like so many people had a F!Couseland who became queen.

Maybe someday.

I'm actually planning on doing a playthrough just so that my Warden can marry him and become queen, even though I hate playing as anything but a mage. But, hey, atleast I get to revamp my tactics.

Really? I thought he was fine. Not fiiiine, just fine. A decent Legolas. It's usually Liv Tyler I can't believe was cast as Arwen. She's very pretty, but definitely not what I'd picture as Arwen.

To each their own, I suppose.

I don't understand why there is so much hate against Bloom. I think he did a lovely job at portraying Legolas. He and Gimli were heartwarmingly cute together. It was great to have this wise elf, blind to all the (physical) hardships his companions were going through, to stand out amidst the group. I can't remember if he was like that in the books, but in any case I love him in the movies.

Stoicism doesn't bother me, passiveness does. Sten was stoic, but not passive. If I did something he didn't like, he'd stop the game to tell me. I wouldn't mind if Fenris was a romancable Sten (luuulz), but I'd probably mind the aversion to talking and short sentences. ^^; I want a little communication, is all. Angsting and emoing are okay, too, so long as we see development over the arc of the game. And the fact that he has more of an aversion to the lyrium marks than physical pain tells me there's some really emotional stuff in him that needs communicating.

Arrrgh, such a cliffhanger. XD At least she seems to be updating frequently ... sucks when you get to the end of an unfinished fanfic made two years ago.

I think you'll make an excellent grandmother. And why skip a stage? Mother, too. Did you pick the name Wynne because you represent her almost completely? ^^;

Whaa? Liv Tyler as Arwen is the most beautiful woman I have ever laid my eyes on. I totally had(have) a FemCrush on her. But maybe that's because I have a thing for beautiful things. And I read the books after I watched the movies, so I've always pictured Arwen as her... :P But as you said, to each their own...

See, I don't think his performance was bad. It's just all of the fangirls because of the actor who portrayed him. I don't mind the fans that liked the character because they thought character was awesome, but the fangirls of Legolas because of the actor were those that need to go-- as Shale would put it-- "Squish!"

For most males, its probably a natural feeling of rivalry, and for most females its probably the desire to take the road less traveled in terms of interest. Just a guess.

He was decent as Legolas, but I never found him as appealing as say, Viggo Mortensen.

*ahem*

So, back to Fenris...think we'll get any new info about him Thursday?
