For me this difference in the elven background combined with excellent characterization (Zevran was written quite well) is what makes elves compelling to people in this game.
(on LOTR)
I liked Bloom's Legolas, the interaction between him and Gimili was really well done, the issue I had with him though is that there wasn't much dialogue with him aside from the occasional banter.

I don't understand why there is so much hate against Bloom. I think he did a lovely job at portraying Legolas. He and Gimli were heartwarmingly cute together. It was great to have this wise elf, blind to all the (physical) hardships his companions were going through, to stand out amidst the group. I can't remember if he was like that in the books, but in any case I love him in the movies.
He was decent as Legolas, but I never found him as appealing as say, Viggo Mortensen.
*ahem*
So, back to Fenris...think we'll get any new info about him Thursday?
Thursday is New Years Eve, right?
See, I have to go to a party. I'm depressed about this. I won't be home. I will miss new information if it's given and so I can not celebrate with the group or cry in anguish with them.
But I am *actually* getting sick. If I get too bad, I won't be able to go.

We can hope.
Did anyone else here follow the first game as it came out? I didn't know anything about it until I started playing it the day after Christmas or so, so I never was part of the lead-up like I am for this one.
Did they release companion videos for the first one? I know they did for Awakening, but I don't know if that's normal or not.

To be fair, Legolas is (arguably) the fellowship member with the least actual characterization. I think I read in an interview once that Tolkien said that of all the members, he was the least integral, because of everyone, he grew the least, learned the least from their travles. Of course, I read that (literally) about ten years ago so it's possible that wasn't Tolkien at all, and I'm making things up.

See, I don't think his performance was bad. It's just all of the fangirls because of the actor who portrayed him. I don't mind the fans that liked the character because they thought character was awesome, but the fangirls of Legolas because of the actor were those that need to go-- as Shale would put it-- "Squish!"
So you're saying you disliked him in the movie because of some crazy fangirls? That sounds... like a valid reason...

I do have friends coming over Thursday night to exchange Christmas presents, since we didn't get to it before the holiday. As soon they leave, I'm going to check for DA2 related updates

Not hating, but a serious question. I've been wondering this since ElfQuest back in the day, but what is the attractiveness (not just in DA, but in other fantasy realms) about elves? I just never saw the attractiveness of elves, but would he be getting the same amount of love if he were human or dwarf?
Elves in general? They're appealing if you like slender or nimble builds, and many people do. They also tend to have angular and more refined features.
Elves also have a range of associations that many find attractive: sensitivity to the natural world, a touch of otherworldliness, freedom from the more industrial attitudes of dwarfs and humans, a preference for settling and maintaining an area and its resources instead of constantly conquering and plundering
This is basically what I was going to say. Also having pointed ears and generally up-tilted eyes are reminiscent of a wolf or cat, animals I consider beautiful and powerful. Elves are also usually superior to humans in many ways.

(and on LotR)
Legolas was pretty much a blank slate so Bloom really didn't have anything to mess up. Really the only elves with characterization were Galadriel and Elrond, and that's actually carry-over from the Silmarillion, where there are elves with even more perosonality ( I totally spent an outrageous amount of money on the Sil. one year so I could get the version with the giant detachable map and pictures, and I regret nothing).
In fact, is there was any interpretation I didn't like in the movies it was Elrond, he was less "worried for the fate of mankind and his adopted son as well as his daughter" and more "keep the filthy humans off the carpet".

I like elves because I can draw them and not be harped at for making "too pretty" a male. Cuz they're pretty!
Though I strongly dislike Orlando Bloom...

Preference for DA elves if only because they lack the overseeing wisdom that Tolkien elves seem to have, clinging onto history, culture, and background that is quickly disappearing. It reminds me of many real-life cultures who are threatened by modernity, though simplified to meet game plot.

If I have the option, it's always what I will choose to play as, at least my first time around. And if I can't play as one, then in the case of DA2, it's what I will choose to romance if given the option. My first female character will be all over Fenris for sure if it's a possibility, and that's why I am one of those who really wants a female elf LI. It's not that being an elf is the only thing that's important or the only thing I care about, but I just take it for granted they're going to be interesting characters regardless of race; I'd just like for the race to be Elf for one of them.

Yeah similar for me. It is much less to do with them being elves and more the culture, history, circumstances, etc. that they have in DA. It could be any other type of race and I be feeling the same as I do about elves in DA.HolyJellyfish wrote...

I'd be more than happy if there was a non-human female character, LI or otherwise.
But if Fenris is BI, everyone will be happy. With enougn mods, he can be anyone's blond haired green eyed curvacious former-slave elf. Provided you turn off his vocals and fantasize.
... maybe not...

Totally. In Tolkien, its all like...
Tolkien Elf: I am all knowing, all living, all seeing. Here is some wisdom *zap* Wisdom! Now I shall gaze wisely into the distance. *Wise gaze*
vs...
DA Dalish Elf: We used to be all knowing, all living, all seeing and **** happened. Now I'm just angry. ANGRY *zap* Angry... *random elf language*. Still angry.
DA City Elf: Dude. I just want to live..... and drink my savings away.

Usually I'm all about the elves in fantasy settings, but in DA I find myself preferring humans for once. That is, I only really enjoyed playing as a human, whereas in other games I've always been an elf or at least a half-elf.HolyJellyfish wrote...

I love the Tolkien elves because they were so untouchable and majestic.. but yes there were times where I felt they were too distant and lofty. In DA I think what bothers me is how elves have been taken down to such a low level compared to portrayals in other games/books.
I think the elves of the Forgotten Realms strike the perfect balance between mythical/majestic and grounded/relatable, so they're still my favorite elves.
Fenris gives me Forgotten Realms-y vibes, so maybe that's part of the reason I like him.
