 Hey whoah whoah, LOL...

I know how awesome Fenris is speaking Qunari. I actually thought that the Arishok was kind of on the Ben-Hassrath "naughty list" though. The way Tallis says "I don't blame you.. after what the Arishok did."

I personally think he was just impressed to hear "the Qun from an elf."

Fenris's Qunari would not be as good as someone like Tallis who lived among the Qunari for so long. He states himself that he learned it from watching and listening to them. Tallis was raised and trained and grew up a part of the Qun. Even with her manipulation and such I don't doubt that she is telling the truth when she says Fenris has a horrible accent. That doesn't necessarily mean he speaks the words/sentences incorrectly, but it indicates that he at least is not fluent in the language. Either that or he has a very thick Tevene or common tongue accent in his speech that comes off to a native Qunari as garbled or incorrect. While he may know the language enough to speak it, he still speaks it "badly" to someone who basically learned it as their first or at least primary language.

I would lean more toward the idea that Fenris just has a thick Tevene accent in his Qunari, but knows the language well enough. Even his common tongue has a bit of that Tevinter accent in it.

As for Tallis.. meh.. I keep it in her thread. People get all uppity about that scene because she "shows Hawke up" when really.. Hawke doesn't even try the door.. preferring to put his/her faith in the companions instead. Knowing they have his/her back. Tallis simply gets "tired of waiting," and attempts something. Hawke knows her friends will be along any minute, and so prefers to put faith in them instead. At least.. that's all I read into it. :?

I would never down-play Fenris's genius when it comes to languages, but I can't deny that he probably does have a horrible Tevinter accent to his Qunari, and Tallis is more than qualified to judge it. Whereas the Arishok was probably just shocked an elf could even speak Qunari.. even badly, and with a thick accent. More than he ever expected I'm sure.

Fair enough. :)  I was a litte surprised to hear that comment about the Arishok too, come to think of it.

True, although that makes me wonder just what exactly was up with the Arishok then. I can't help but wonder if he was either some Qunari extremist or already in the doghouse for losing the relic 'on his watch'.

Also, my comment was more about Gideon Emery's voice, really. :)

Probably. I was just having a hard time with the more awkward fumbles even though I know they were likely there for humor. The Ben'Hazareth angle really impresses me, though, and overall, that aspect of Tallis I do like.

I just facepalm'd at that bit. :)

I've seen that somewhere, but it could have been on DA. I remember I cruised VelvetRue for a ToP at least once.

If you force us to look at it again, though, I guess I'll survive.  *wanders off to write some more 'dessert' fic.*

Well, one that you definitley need to know is Aimo. She does fabulos work! Pity I haven't seen her around here lately.
Also Trickybunnie, love her stuff. And also the wonderous Pseudorecognition. I believe the first page of this thread still has the picture archive, good stuff.

*Sigh* I've decided that I won't touch my bloody stubbon chapter until after I my sis and I meet up to take our dogs walkies...Sometimes walking helps me jumpstart the muse, and since nothing else wants to work Posted Image.

Yes, can't forget SmaiLika07. I absolutely love all her stuff...

I am very sleepy atm... so pardon me if I am rambling a bit.

I'm not sure what was up with the Arishok except that he was a leader of an Antaam and a warrior not a Ben-Hassrath or an indoctrinator -- whoever that is, LOL. Basically meaning that he was outcast by the Qun for his mistake and over the course of all those years decides to take it upon himself to "indoctrinate" or "clean up" Kirkwall. That would pretty much put him on the "naughty list" I think since it was not a demand of the Qun to do so. He even says himself that it is not his "role" to indoctrinate.

As for Fenris... he noticed just like everyone else that the Arishok was on edge, and the most interesting thing I think is when he suggests the duel. He is obviously familiar with the Qunari tactics since he tells Meredith what they are doing. "Putting all the important people in one place..." and all that. As for the duel... it's been stated before, but it seems like Fenris is simply thinking of the most neat and tidy option with the least casualties. Also because he has faith in Hawke. Of course if Isabela comes back it is the Arishok who suggests the duel, and that actually makes it a little better I think.

Tashy.. I hope you find inspiration soon... I know how frustrating writer's block can be! Sometimes just being alone with your thoughts a bit or going out to clear your head is helpful. Either way I look forward to the next chapter ;).

Being away from this thread for over 24 hours seems so wrong! And I missed two entire pages of discussion!

Fenris with shoes= I wish it were so, but I'm kinda glad it isn't so, because I love his feet and I find it difficult to picture him with shoes/boots on.

Fenris' default armour- love it, love it, love it. I love how copperish it is under the light. Everything about it is perfect and I am seriously not a fan of the black coat. Too "Devil May Cry" for my taste.

Fenris' Qun- Maybe its because I don't really like Tallis, but I got all defensive when she told Fenris his Qun basically sucks. I see why she thinks so, being Qunari and fluent in it and all, but c'mon, its amazing that Fenris knows as much as he does without being Qunari. That, coupled with his knowledge of Qunari custom, impresses me greatly.

Sigh. I'd better go get my DA2 fix for today before delving into practising my French (I set myself a "mission" of being fluent in French and Italian by the time I'm 25, which is 6 years from now. So, as the French say, au revoir, mes amis! Bonne journee!

Ha HA!!!! I beat you you bloody bastard Writers Block - Sure, it's not the longest chapter but around 1900 words is still pretty good!

Thanks for all the suppport guys! *huggles*

For some very strange reason I found 'Cumulus' by Imogen Heap to be very helpful Fenris POV writing music......Interesting.

@Arcane - WOW, that one awesome mission you have, good luck!

Tallis is into one upmanship - she is constantly trying to belittle others - when Anders tells his romanced Hawke about his fantasy rescue, she comes back with - don't want to spoil things but I was the one who did the rescuing - wholly unnecessary. I think Fenris questioning her in her own language actually shook her and that is why she mocks his accent - normally she could speak to other Qunari and you would have no idea what she was saying but now she knows Hawke's friend can understand, so she feels compelled to put him down over it. I just thought, hah, good for you Fenris. At least he had the good sense to check out her cover story to see if she was genuine.

Pardon me while I rant a bit over the highlighted section: people who don't care about language may wish to skip to the end of  the rant.

Accents have nothing to do with fluency in a language.  Yes, with practice, an accent can be reduced, but almost never eradicated entirely.  A person can speak, understand, write and read a secondary language as expertly as a native speaker, and still sound funny to a someone who grew up surrounded by that language, learned it as a child.  Pretty much the only way to speak a foreign language without any accent is to learn it as a young child, the way you learn your native language.  This is because of the neural pathways which form our language centres; the parts which hold the 'blueprints' for language forms we don't use die out early, giving us what is called a 'critical window' - the period of time in which we are best able to learn language, and after which, it becomes much more difficult.  That window varies a bit, but is generally the breakoff point is somewhere around puberty, while the process of the dying-off begins even earlier.  Given that Fenris has likely had little chance to actually speak Qunari, and he definitely learned it after the 'critical window' closed, it certainly wouldn't surprise me that he has a thick accent, and not a polished, practiced one that's less bothersome to the native ear.

Doesn't mean Tallis is right for pointing it out; in fact, it means she's even more wrong, because it's literally something he cannot change.  She's effectively mocking him for a speech impediment.  I don't tolerate people mocking others for their accents in real life, and it still makes me angry when the characters aren't real.

Okay, end rant, it's safe to read again!

I believe Tallis chose to join the Qun, and not raised under it?  She never says it directly, but the implication from a few banters is that she was from Tevinter, and she does say directly that she wasn't born to the Qun.  She talks about it to . . . Aveline, I believe, in a banter, and to Hawke directly.  And to Fenris, I recall that she says she chose the Qun, when he compares it to slavery.

Which brings me to something that I find interesting is Fenris' respect for the Arishok, when put next to his several comparisons of the Qun to slavery in MotA. As for me,I certainly agree with Fenris about that outlook on the Qun - not just for mages, but for everyone born to it, who never even have a choice, and who will be brainwashed into believing it by the Ben-Hassrath if they doubt and can't manage to get away to be Tal-Vashoth.

And actually, I have a whole thing on how a lot of Tal-Vashoth are still allowing themselves to be bound by the Qun even if they tried to reject it, but this is not the thread for it.

Tevene, common-tongue, some Qunari (albeit badly according to Tallis), and that's it. I can't really count any others as ones he "knows."

Tevene is native language of Tevinter, and he is fluent in that. If that is what your referring to.

That's a Wiki fail. It's canonically Tevene. Dunno where Arcanum came from, but it sounds cool. I remember reading the "Tevene" thing from something, like a PDF for the tabletop game or something. :S

It seems at times that is the way Bioware wrote her character, trying to show us how cool she was...and IMHO they hard a little too hard.  It isn't necessary for her to say any of those lines, especially about Fenris' accent.  He obliviously knows the language and again IMHO sounds better speaking Qun than her.  But then again he has a great voice, and hers is okay.  Fenris was the only one with enough brains to be a little suspicious of her story.  As much as I like playing the DLC overall, it did annoy me at times.

And I agree with Harle about accents having nothing to do with knowledge of a language.  When I lived in Quebec, I could read and write in French but when speaking in French, as my good friends would say my accent was that of Anglophone not that of a Francophone.  And many people (native English speaker) never learn to speak French with the same type of accent as a native Frenchperson.  Now I live in the US and my French is well... dead.:o

Mmm, first check of the thread for the day and greeted with delish Fenris pics!

@omearee - my French is dying a slow death, as even though I'm in Ontario, we never get over to Quebec to practice! And we've heard the same thing - our "accent" isn't very good, but at least they can usually understand what we're saying!
