The issue that I had with Alistair was this: he was well written, but I couldn't stand him personally. To me he falls under
lawful good and it might just be my tendency to prefer more neutral-aligned characters, but Alistair's constant over-optimistic personality and black and white view of the world didn't really interest me.
Now Fenris, strikes me as being
true neutral at first. He's been on the run for a while and probably just wants to just be left alone.
Later on however (assuming you befrend him) I can see him being more focused on looking out for his new rag-tag band of friends rather than worrying about what side he's on.
Fenris to me seems like the kind of person who distrusts laws and groups like those in Tevinter and the regulations of the Chantry, those rules didn't do anything to keep him from being tortured, so why should he follow them?
He strikes me as being very self-centered at first, he's been concerned about his own survival for so long that the affairs of other people don't matter much to him at first. Later on though he might become more protective of his impromptu family (depending on friend / rival status)
Think this:
Random Baddie: And now dear champion, prepare to die!
Friend!Fenris: (angry) If you want her your going to have to go through me.
Rival!Fenris: (angry) I'm sorry my friend but if you want to kill her your going to have to wait in line. The queue forms behind
me.
