Well I have to say thats a great thing to wake up to in the morning...but sadly my mind went into detail mode and ruined it for me yelling about a painting homework Im deviating from.

Also IM about 1 minute from turning into a Tex Avery wolf and start obscene whistling at that picture....oh screw it. Heeeeeeeeeeelllo lyrium nurse!

Gahh! Good choices! Funny because I like a lot of Lifehouse's songs and didn't put these in for some reason. Added them before I go to work, LOL.. perfect timing :pinched:

I didn't add "If only," "Your hope," or "Wherever you will go."

I couldn't find "If Only" or "Your Hope" on grooveshark -- sometimes this happens <_<

"Wherever You Will Go" has a specific meaning for me and will always remind me of something else so I left it out. So does "Everything" and "Hanging by a Moment," but I added those because they just fit so well, and I can overlook my personal attachment to them.

That being said I'm ALWAYS updating that playlist and if people ever have song recs don't ever be sorry to get them to me, LOL.

As far as the lyrium markings and DA3 cameo -- I'm with moto.. as I said -- it is whatever discretion they want to choose what is "canon," and with so many potential endings I just don't even bother speculating.

About the Lyrium thing and what DG said -- I already covered this with my take on it rather extensively HERE in my Lyrium and Fenris essay thing I wrote when that first came out, LOL.

Anyways, I gotta go to work so will sneak in when I can ^_^

You mean you knew all those lovely songs already and you never thought about including them?:o Tsk tsk. :PWell, I'm glad you like them and see the link to Fenris.
Oh oh! I forgot to list Am I Ever Gonna Find Out! That one needs to be included too, haha.
Too bad grooveshark doesn't have those songs of The Calling. Alex Max Band's solo album is great too, but there isn't really a song on it that I can relate to Fenris very much.
Oh, oh! The Calling - Things Will Go My Way as well. Or maybe grooveshark doesn't have that one either?
If I ever come up with anything else I will let you know.

I've read your lyrium essay and found it very interesting. I do believe the lyrium is harmful for Fenris and I fear he won't become as old as he could have without those markings. Even dwarves are not immune to the effects and cannot just touch it without harm. Remember that dwarven merchant in Orzammer in DAO? He had some kind of accident with the lyrium he works with, and that seriously damaged his mind. I don't recall what exactly was the accident, whether it involved accidental contact with the lyrium or simply too much contact with it, but it proves that even to the people who have some kind of resilience to it need to be very careful. The templars who use it become strongly addicted to it and their minds get altered somewhat as well. Especially when they have withdrawal symptoms.

It is odd that Fenris has survived that long already with all that stuff in him without any clear effects on his mind. That he would have some kind of inborn resilience however I find I bit too much of a coincidence. He is an elf, not a dwarf. Fenris' body and mind are probably very strong, to make it possible for him to survive the ritual. But  I think Danarius' ritual includes a sort of protection against the potential harmful effects and not that it really is an protection he was born with. Although, now that I think of it... his sister is a mage, so a certain affinity for magic runs in his family... but mages can't touch raw lyrium without killing themselves, so that would rather be a disadvantage... Maybe because he isn't a mage some special "magic" gene (lol) gives a certain protection. I'm not sure.

I don't think it is possible to undo the ritual without killing Fenris. Due to its highly addictive effects, he will probably suffer from severe withdrawal symptoms if the lyrium is suddenly removed from his body, and those will probably kill him. His body has adapted to the presence of the lyrium and probably can't simply deal without it anymore, especially if you follow your theory about lyrium in his bloodstream and nervous system. If the markings would be more like regular tattoos, only affecting the skin, it might be possible to cut them out, magically or not, but they likely differ too much from tattoos to allow that. And of course it would hurt like hell to cut everything out.
Whether the memory wipe was intentional... I tend to believe it was a side effect of the ritual and the pain that came with it. I think Fenris was "broken" by all the pain, as happens in the book Wizard's first rule (don't know if you guys have read it of course, but the main character is tortured until he is "broken" and when that has happened, he forgets who he is and doesn't remember things of his old life. He becomes a sort of obedient pet of the woman who tortured him). I think it might even have been a negative thing to happen for Danarius, because now Fenris has forgotten that he wanted the markings and that he actually competed for them. Plus if he still remembered his mother and sister, their existence may have prevented his escape because he feared Danarius would hurt them. It might have helped to keep him in line. If Danarius didn't lie about the affection Fenris once had for him, the memory wipe has done more harm than good by erasing that too.

Ehm... I wanted to say something else as well... oh yes, about the knowledge of the ritual dieing with Danarius. Well, probably not. Danarius didn't exactly keep his lyrium infused slave hidden. He liked to show off with him. Considering how competitive the magisters are, several of his colleague likelys felt inspired to experiment themselves. Danarius is a powerful magister, but nothing states he is the most powerful of all. I see no reason why other magisters would not succeed in recreating his results. At the time, Fenris might have been the first of his kind, but I don't think he will be the last. Lyrium infused slaves will come in pretty handy in the war against the Qunari...
I agree Fenris was the first successful result of the ritual, but I think Danarius had already experimented before he used Fenris. Fenris was chosen by battle. He proved to be the best fighter. It would be a waste to use your best slave for an experiment with an outcome you really can't predict very well yet. After several test subjects, Danarius would have perfected the method and concluded he needed a very strong person, both of body and mind, to survive the ritual. Because he wanted a body guard, selection by battle was a nice method to find the best subject.

All in all I fear Fenris's mind and/or body will sooner or later clearly begin to suffer from the unnatural presence of lyrium inside him. How long it will take is hard to tell, because he has already managed so well for 15 years or so (in act 3). Maybe Danarius' magical protection will start to wear off after all those years as well.

Phew, this is my longest post here so far.=]

For anyone who wants to read some fantastic fanfic on Fenris's markings, check out these three by strangegibbon on fanfic.net - www.fanfiction.net/s/6846869/1/Marked

There are three stories starting with "Marked".  I have to tell you by the time I finished the second I was teary eyed and three just made me weep.  Posted Image

I agree that there will eventually be consequences of some kind, but I do like Arquen's theory that he just needs to be "maintained".
And as for DA3, it never even occurred to me that he could be "unhealthy" when/if we came across him.  So I'm now all for me assuming him and Hawke run off into the sunset together and live a wonderful life!Posted Image

@cosmochyck: Heh it was about time someone brought up that story here. Yeah strangegibbon does go for the "oh my god thats soo sad" endings with good writing. I guess you cold call that an unhappy ending of sorts. Least not all of them are. The DA Quartet one had me in stitches..though nsfw.

Lol, don't worry, you didn't ruin my Friday. It was a beautiful story, but so so sad... I believe I may dream about this tonight. If I do, it's certainly not going to be a happy dream. Poor Fenris.:( Even so, thank you for posting it. It's been a while since a story has actually managed to bring tears to my eyes. Been a while for books.

@Cosmo Thanks for making me cry like a baby. I mean it! I really needed to cry (makes me feel better) and this was just the thing to trigger the tears! Lol! I suspect my excessive crying had more to do with the fact that I wanted to cry and less to do with the actual story. LOL. But it certainly is sad and... seriously, seriously touching. Sigh. Now I'm tearing up again =P

Well...fuuuuuuuu... at work and I'm going to have to pick up an extra day. Why you wall-o-text when I can't respond!? *grumble*

Sad, angsty fics are favs of mine. If they can bring a tear to my eye they are truly fantastic because I don't cry at anything, lol. Except LOTR. I cry like a babe in those movies and books. I wrote the ritual, but it wasn't terribly explicit because it was from Fenris's pov and honestly he wouldn't remember much.

Posting silly screenie for levity purposes (since everyone is crying now) .. first time I ever seen Fenris knocked on his arse (with a screenie to document it that is) -- hope someone gets a chuckle from it:

Off-topic: I haven't started Skyrim yet (due to lack of funds), but I am totally obsessing over this Bard's Dragonborn song -- it is so beautiful:

Ehm.. sorry?:whistle:I felt inspired, hehe. Plus, I didn't know your work schedule, and time zones make it difficult to determine the right time to post a big fat text.  You're in the U.S., so you live like ten hours in the past for me.:P I hope I didn't actually make you rage face at work though. I don't know what kind of work you do, but your colleagues and/or customers would probably be startled.:P

It it pretty funny though that this entire thread is crying because Cosmo decided to post the link to a fic. Poor Fenris. I can never look at him without remembering the lyrium-poisoning.

@Thief - that Fenris is too cute - and funny! Love that show :)

So sorry to all those crying!  I just though ****** was such a beautiful story.  Believe me, it took a few other upbeat fanfics to have me erase that from my memory (or at least current memory).

I just thought it was so well written and addresses something that only a few have touched on (excluding of course the talented Arquen).
I just prefer to think of Fenris as dying a few years sooner than regular elves. Still broody, still with Hawke :)

More cutie Fenris!
