Fenris has obtained rather considerable knowledge regarding Qunari culture and practices, a result of him being left behind by his master after a battle between the Tevinter mages and the Qunari on Seheron. His injuries were treated by Fog Warriors and he spent several months living with them before Danarius returned to retrieve Fenris. The Fog Warriors refused to give him up, and Danarius was injured in the subsequent battle. Danarius ordered Fenris to kill the Fog Warriors who had defended him, which he did. He indicates regret at doing so, but apparently still had a lingering propensity to do as commanded upon the return of his master. It was this event that caused Fenris to leave his master, taking advantage of the delay in pursuit that Danarius' injuries offered. If brought to meetings with the Arishok, Fenris has special dialogue that demonstrates this knowledge, which, in turn, impresses the Arishok. However, he also states, when asked, that he is not a follower of the Qun.

Hmm, the wiki actually doesn't say it as explicitly as I recalled, although it still seems to suggest it.

Nice, dual wielding Fenris! :happy:Please don't smite me for this potential blasphemy, but I've always thought dual wielding would have suited Fenris much better. It's such a pity Bioware left the dual wielding warrior out of DA2. I know there's no  "real" reason why elves wouldn't be able to use a two-handed blade, but considering how lean they've made the elves look in this game, a fighting style that was more quick and nimble would have fit better, I think. I have had thought this since his character was announced and a saw a picture of him. The association "dual wielding" just popped up.:P Fenris would certainly have looked bad-ass with two swords in his hands.
Plus, with the bend back he shows all the time when you stand still for a moment, it almost looks like that big blade is too heavy for him or something and he will end up with a hernia.

OMG. I'm glad they didn't make him dual wielding. Only because that is the single thing, I think, that could make him even more sexy. I ADORE dual wielders. i dont know what it is... maybe its a fetish. And yes I wish that they had put in the dual wielding warrior.  I LOVE playing a rogue.... but it would be nice to be able to be the warrior.

Wait.... if he singlehandedly wiped out the Fog Warriors and they're Tal Vashoth... Why the hell can't he do that in my games?  And why do I keep DYING in those fights?

QFT.  Seriously. I agree.

and I'm just gonna stare at the pretties otherwise and NOT get involved with the person who doesn't know whats going on. lol.

oh look. its Fenris.

@Arquen, I thought I was the one being too wind up. My temper went up as soon as I read 'a real reason why Fenris was branded with Lyrium? What effect did it have on him?' Side effect of having an ADHD children at home and hit PMS this time of the month.

@EternalAmbiguity, srsly, if you don't get those backstory straight before you blunder into a thread and ask question, people are going to ****** off. Not that we are not patient or anything, but some stuff are really there if you pay some attention when you play the games.

EDIT Lack of Fenris art? Here I come!

As far as the lyrium tattoos.. hmmm.. I just don't think it's possible. Templars get addicted to lyrium, and even in its crystalized, raw form, it can be distilled but the least lethal way is potions, and those are still addicting and still have terrible side effects. To etch that into your skin would cause some kind of reaction no doubt. The lyrium would be absorbed somewhat seeing as contact with lyrium seems to cause reaction (much like mercury can be absorbed through contact with skin) when people come in contact with it. So, I just don't think it can be done unless one can find a way to take out the negative side effects of lyrium, but I'm sure the Templar Order won't like that one bit.

Do mages get addicted to lyrium?  If not why not?  They use it to replenish spell casting.  I don't remember.  It's been a long time since I played.:o  Now, I feel guilty.:?..

Omg... guys! I'm at work like "I know the answer!" Like a geeky kid in the back of class, and I am forced to phone post! Gahh!

1st -- DG confirmed that the Fog Warriors are a group of Seheron natives who rebel against the Tevinter imperium and the Qunari (Kossith). However, they are most likely a mix of all races, including Kossith. So, they are not Tal'Vashoth. Alsp, Fenris learned Qunari from his time with Danarius as suggested in MOTA. He suggests he spent time "watching" them and learning from them. This could have been with the fog warriors as well, but it is more likely he started this process with Danarius.

2nd -- It seems that for mages the lyrium is more an augment to their powers. It is said lyrium is more potent and deadly to mages, but I think in large quantities over a period of time they would develop withdrawl symptoms too. Just like the Templars. Usually mages choose to use lyrium potions and only sparingly. Templars are constantly fed lyrium and apparently "need" it for their skills. This is debateable, since, well.. Alistair, but it seems that what happens to the Templars could happen to anyone who was fed enough lyrium to become dependent on it.

Venhedis, forgot to add that THAT NECKLACE IS GORGEOUS AND I WANT ONE, and I need to show you guys the pics I have of Fenris holding his greatsword with one hand. It kills me. I could totally imagine him pulling another greatsword out, lmao. Over the top, yes. Awsome beyond belief? Definitely.

Also, I love louvette and smailika ... gahh...

Alistair pretty planly stated that he in fact didn't need lyrium to use Templar "skills". They give it to the templars as a form of control and to "augment" and strengthen said skills. Thus then become addicted, and since the chantry controls it...

Think of the Chantry as a coke dealer and every templar in thedas as addicts. They don't need it to be templars, but they need it.

Yep, what Heidenreich said. The Chantry uses the lyrium to have complete control over the Templars. It merely fools the Templars into thinking it is essential to augment their powers and whatnot (though, I'm not 100% sure on this point. They may not need it to use their skills, but it may actually be needed to augment these skills). I dunno. Either way, I think it's downright wrong to administer such an addictive substance to Templars, knowing that they'll lose their minds and go loco without it.

Tsk tsk.

I've been staring at that 2nd one for a while. Saw it on the tumblr. Hmmm.... love it. That face, that expression, gahh... the toned down gray/brown of it all..

As for the lyrium/templar thing. Kinda off topic from the lyrium being tattooed thing, but yeah.. as I said.. because Alistair. Pretty much is fanon that Templars are just controlled with lyrium. As samson said.. you can leave the order any time you want.. heh heh *evil laughter* It's just manipulation, but I think the Templar skills actually do benefit from the lyrium. I don't think it is necessary.

Thanks for the explanation, Arquen.:) I already suspected you would be the one to clarify things, hehe. Fenris' statement about the Fog Warriors that they were "free with their affections" made me question whether they were Tal-Vashoth, because even though they don't follow the Qun anymore, they still don't seem likely to behave in such way.

I don't know how many chapters Coffee, Black has, but I'm going pretty fast. Chapter 41 now. Third base, lol.=] But I think Fen was lying about having lived in Amsterdam, because if he spoke French there, like he said, not many people would have understood a word of what he said, haha. :P English, yeah, would be fine mostly. French? Nope. :P

I thought of it as away to control the Templars.  How better to control a group of well armed and well trained people, than being the group that gives them their fix.  That way the Templars don't question the chantry.

The mage thing was a random thought when I was reading Arquen post and then I couldn't remember the mage side of it.  It makes sense that it would be addictive to mages as well. And our Fenris has the stuff tattooed on him .

Hey, I only discovered just now that the diplomatic option after the love scene is different for male Hawke. Female Hawke asks about the markings, if they hurt. Male Hawke asks about it being difficult with another man. Huh, I've always just assumed there weren't any differences in dialogue for m/f Hawke. I prefer asking about the markings, though.

Interesting. I agree, I think I prefer inquiring about the markings regardless of Hawke's gender, but I think that's mostly because it feels like the writers trying too hard to go 'hey look at the S/S pairing - see, we listen'! (I really don't think at that point Hawke's gender is important as Fenris would be drawn to who he/she is rather than what, but that's just me.)

Interesting! I never knew that. I'm playing as a male Hawke for the first time (6th playthrough; I should be ASHAMED of myself) and I was wondering whether there would be slight discrepancies here and there. Good to know that there are. Shows that Bioware really put some thought into the whole romance thing.

And LOL about the Fenris sandwich! I wonder who'll win that prize next!

Bolded for truth; I've noticed it more in Mass Effect, but I do like how the main character's gender can and does enter into things and they aren't just carbon-copied. :) )

I always loved the "It can be a lot to take in.." line in the male romance. The "omg you did not just say that!" Factor went up 10 fold. I only have one male Hawke and he romanced Izzy so I never saw it except on youtube, but yeah there are subtle differences in each romance between m/f.

I keep trying to convince my boyfriend to replay and do a Fenris romance.. lmao I don't think it will ever happen. He's all "I like him and all... just not THAT much." I'm all "come on! I romanced Izzy you can romance Fenris!" He just rolls his eyes at me. Bah! Hopeless. Lol.

Still working :(

Hmmm I must be a fickle person to not try a male/male romance with Fenris.....then again I blame that on the fratboy part of my brain. Still knowing thats in the game really piques my curiosity.

Arquen your not the only one to have a spouse look at you weird for game companion choices....cept for the case of my husband he views it as pokemon and gotta sleep with em all.

(Hey Ursula you win again on profile sandwhich...ah screw it, its like winning at a drinking game whenever you hear a vowel.)

The "It can be a lot to take in, I know," line made me facepalm so hard. XD And laugh, but. Oh, Hawke. A bit confident in yourself, aren't you?

I've romanced Fenris with male and female Hawkes, and while it saddens me that there are some lines male Hawkes just don't get - they can't ask if Fenris has ever been with anyone, for example - I have to admit that I do like that there are some small dialogue differences. While Hawke is more or less the same person whether male or female, there /are/ societal differences between the way the sexes are treated in Thedas, and so not having any differences to reflect the slighty different life experiences between a male and female Hawke would have been a bit jarring.

Even if I do so wish m!Hawke could get the 'festooned with ruffles' line. XD
