Oh, I now actually have a debate subject. I am wondering why Danarius waited so long to come after Fenris in between acts. I guess between act 1 and 2, he needed to gather new resources to continue the hunt, and maybe let Fenris get confident he had given up so that he would get lazy and easier to capture. But after A Bitter Pill, I wonder why he would wait another three years. He could have been surprised and shocked that Fenris had managed to kill his apprentice, so maybe he got a bit scared... but when he finally appears during Alone, he doesn't seem concerned in the least that he would not be capable of taking Hawke and co. down. He looked confident enough. So why then bother to wait another three years? Sure, let Fenris walk into a trap is nice, might again be with the expectation Fenris lowers his guard... but if Danarius is so confident about his powers, he could have easily come to Kirkwall earlier to drag Fenris out of his mansion.

So, why do you guys think Danarius waited such a long time?

I have two opinions concerning it with the **** in me simply says "Poor story telling" but that would make an awful cop out.
However the smart ass in me simply says:
1.Ascertain fenris' location and make him go insane waiting for 3 years.
2. Send in Hadrianna.
3.?????
4.Profit

Hmmm... great question.

This is how I see it:

I think first and foremost, Danarius wanted to let Fenris get confident that he's no longer being hunted. Let him relax a bit, put his guard down and all, and then strike at him when he leasts expects it.
But after Hadriana got killed, maybe Danarius actually felt a bit... scared? Maybe he didn't know that Fenris had support in the form of Hawke and co. He thought he was all alone and an easy target, but when Hadriana failed, he had second thoughts? I don't know about this one... it seems plausible, but it doesn't sit well in my thoughts.
It could even be possible that Danarius sent Hadriana knowing that Fenris would kill her and knowing that she'd beg for her life in exchange for information about Varania. So, Danarius intended for Hadriana to tell Fenris about his sister (though, she didn't know that) so that he can use that as bait to lure Fenris into "Alone", which he succeeded in doing. I think this version is a bit more plausible than Danarius being hesitant and a bit scared, because, like you said, ren, he seemed pretty confident when he cornered Hawke and co. in the Hanged Man.

I'm looking forward to reading other people's thoughts on this. Great topic, ren!

@ Ghost: Yeah, poor storytelling would probably be the most likely explanation, I know. But if we try to fit it into the story, what could we come up with?:P I share the ???? at step 3, haha.

Tough call, although I wonder if Fenris's leaving Kirkwall to hunt for Varania, ironically, made it harder for Danarius to locate him?

I am comfortable assuming that Hawke & Co killing Hadriana might give him brief pause because he actually bothered to show personally in Act III and bring a few henchlings along with him, but I can't imagine that alone stopping him for another 3 years. However, if Fenris is all over the place looking for Varania, and doing a good job keeping a low profile, I can imagine that complicating things if Danarius doesn't have some way to use the markings to track him.

There are a couple of other possibilities that I can think of as well. One of them is that Fenris may not be as high on Danarius' priorities as he thinks. I mean, he's clearly important enough to have Danarius show up in person once we take out his apprentice and thwart every other attempt, but that's what it takes to draw him after Fenris personally.

The other possibility, which I think may be the most realistic given what we know of Tevinter in general, is that there is some major power struggle going on in Tevinter that keeps Danarius otherwise occupied (making him send an apprentice, use tons of hirelings, even abandon the hunt for a few years).  Let's face it, a lot of what's wrong with Thedas can be traced back to the Imperium (the Blights, numerous wars, all kinds of 'dark' magic, etc.can all be traced there), so I can't imagine any Magister who values his hide staying out of any kind of power struggles.

Just my 2 speculative coppers, though. :)

actually Ursula that makes so much more sense. Then again we wont know whats really gooing on in Tevinter until....hopefully DA3. But with my luck on certain franchises I play, it'll be DA4.
But by then I want to visit a vacation home in Seheron or I dunno see if this world is on a planet....or a giant disc ontop a giant drunk Fenris. (nyquil kickin in)

OK, I know I don't post in here (at least not for a long time). Mostly because I don't think I can add much to the great discussions. However, I caught a screenie that I thought I'd share. Every time I see this scene, I cheer!

Nice, Ursula, those things definitely make sense. I hadn't even thought of Danarius being otherwise occupied, but of course that is possible.
I think Danarius' best chance to capture Fenris would have been to storm into the mansion at night and overwhelm him. It's what worked for Grace and Thrask if they kidnap him as well. Even Fenris needs to sleep at least a little once in a while. Ah well, fortunately Danarius didn't think of that.

Ladysamen: nice screenshot. What's the blue thing sticking out of Danarius' robes though? Fenris' lost sword?:P
