Oh, ToP, almost!

I'm sure this topic has come up before, but almost 2000 pages is A LOT to look through! I was wondering what you thought about how Fenris feels about being an elf. In my recent game, he talks to Merrill and says that the elves history is not HIS, it's just history. I'm thinking he really does not identify himself as an elf first. I'm thinking his self identity is 'slave'. Or, ex-slave. I'm wondering how important race is to him. Any thoughts?

Hmm, this is an interesting question. For the most part, I think that Fenris is like Zevran in that he doesn't identify himself by his race. He does seem to focus on the fact that he was a slave. When we first meet him, one of the first things he says is "I am not a slave!"  Perhaps that is a way of showing him trying to get away from that image of himself?

Over time, and certainly after his 'Alone' quest, he starts to come out of that slave 'mentality' and begins to see himself as a free man. Not an elf, because he seems to see them as a people who aren't really working to change their lot in life.

Part of me wants to say that he does recognize himself as being an elf, if only for the fact that he asks if being one is a problem for Hawke, if pursuing a romance. Of course, that could just be him trying to find a loophole, should a romance not be what either of them really wants.

And now I feel like I'm seeming wishy washy on the whole subject. Perhaps I shall ponder this question further and try to make more sense later.:D

*Shifty eyes* You guys don't bite newbies, do you? I've been a lurker for a long while, just joined because this thread makes me laugh.

If you do bite, might I suggest a nice steak instead? I'm not all that tastey. :)Posted Image

I also love Fenris. But that's just a given at this point, isn't it?

I think that he identifies himself more as an ex-slave... and then just like a man. He never really talks about being an elf or anything - just that that isn't who he is. I think he just doesn't find that being an elf has anything to do with who he is... I dunno, I reckon that race isn't that important to him, all things considered...

Adding on an extra to my random head-popping-in-ness... HAPPY NEW YEAR MY FELLOW FENRIS LOVERS!!!!!!! <3<3<3 Now I'm off to play Dragon Age 2 until midnight... so I'm gonna get a good eleven hours of Fenris loving in :D

Oh, and hello my fellow lurker :)

I only friendmanced him, but if/when he read aloud to my Hawke, I'm sure my sarcastic little brat of a Hawke probably fell asleep within five minutes of magey ranting :P

You guys, let's petition for a Hawke mansion dinner party DLC.  Don't you know Anders and Sebastian would probably come to blows.  Fenris would get quietly drunk.  Isabela would start hitting on a confused Aveline.  (Donnic would watch with a wistful smile.)  Merrill pretending not to notice Carver's poorly disguised innuendos.  Varric and Hawke engaged in a drinking contest, ignoring the chaos around them.

Oh, that would be grand.

Stop talking you hit gold. NOw take my money to fund this operation. (Also early happy new years and happy birthday to me tomorrow. Ill be sleeping for my last day of being drunk...spouse's birthday wish)<_<

Happy birthday, Nappa! I hope you have a blast!

And yeah, Happy New Year to everyone on the BSN! <3

Not 100% true, Arcane, but only because we all love to bite into the fresh non-fattening virtual cookies we serve when lurkers announce themselves. :) *drops off a fresh plate*

And, happy birthday, Nappa! Have a great time! :)

Happy New Year to everyone else, though I am sure I'll be around for the "time warped" New Years Eve and New Years' Day, even though you Aussies and Kiwis beat us to it every year! ;)

Birthday wishes Nappa! Have a good one!

Welcome Fresh Meat! I mean... fellow Fenris fans. We are a pretty good bunch here. Somehow this thread got a reputation a while ago for being full of ravenous fans who eat everyone who steps foot in here. Hence I welcome all fresh meat :). Even though I haven't seen anyone here "bite" anyone else, lol.

As for the Fenris as an elf thing. We recently discussed this, but basically Fenris has no connection to his elven roots. He is an elf, but that is as far as it goes. He really doesn't distinguish or dwell on this fact. He was a slave first, and an elf secondary. He doesn't like the Dalish at all, and the Alienage elves disgust him with the way they "squander" their freedom. He really doesn't identify with them, and while I'm sure he is very aware how elves are treated in Thedas, it doesn't seem to be important to him.

If you read DG's short story for Fenris, you'll see that Fenris (correct me if I'm wrong) notices a drunk elf in the alley or something. He reflects on how frustrating this is, how these elves are free and yet they allow themselves to be treated as servants and slaves.

So I think Fenris does think of himself as an elf, and he feels doubly frustrated as both an elf and an ex-slave. When he snaps at other elves, whether they're Dalish or city elves or what have you, I think it comes from a severe level of self-consciousness, of knowing that he is an elf, and that others will always see this about him, no matter what, in the same way that he can't seem to shake off being a slave ... it's a part of him.

My head hurts; it's 2am -_-

EDIT: Also, in other news, I made DA2 Sims.  Found the loveliest ear sliders for Fenris.  He's adorable.  Also made a Ser Pounce-a-lot.  Wish someone would make some proper Anders hair.  (No I did not make Fenders.  I made twin Hawkes.)

Dammit.. have to work and there is good DISCUSSION. Why do you guys always do this to me!? LOL.

I always wait until I know you are at work.:innocent: Haha, okay, just kidding. Apparently you are in an unfortunate time-zone.:P

As for Fenribela -- I actually see it happening. Again because Fenris actually has some respect for Isabela. He returns her flirtations. He's a big boy and he knows his own limitations and himself. IF he didn't want to pursue Isabela or he didn't want her pursuing him then he would say so. He is rather stand offish at first "you've enjoyed many." Yet he also knows the difference between a truly selfish and heartless individual and someone who is just trying to be "twice as tough" as everyone else. He teases her. Even in MotA "That's our Isabela -- such a giver!" He has an interest in Isabela because of who she is and what she does. He doesn't ignore her faults, but he is willing to respect her as someone who is a good person underneath the facade she puts on. Again, respect is key with Fenris, and he can grow to respect Isabela. This can in turn grow into something more.

And I've run out of time. Quickie post because WORK.. JfkLDJFKL:JLEJJSL:JFLAIEIEOU!!!!

I know he gets along with Isabela and has a certain amount of respect for her (at least after she returns with the relic). But there is a certain amount of space (and really a lot of space in my eyes) between that and casual sex for fun.

I am not against it or anything. I don't hate Isabela, she is my favorite companion with her sense of humor. I am fine with the idea of companions living their own lives and developing relationships with someone else than Hawke if Hawke has no interest in them. But I just can't fit the sex thing with Fenris' personality. After Danarius' dead, he surely can finally loosen up a bit, but he doesn't seem the type for "Finally, freedom! Let's have sex!" or something, lol.

That the respect for Isabela can grow into something more, I can see that. But I don't know if just sex really can be called "something more" in that regard. Perhaps he has feelings for Isabela and doesn't want to scare her off by admitting it too quickly? To me, that seems more likely for Fenris.

I've been lurking during the previous "Fenris as an elf" discussion, and don't have much to add. He sees himself as an elf, but doesn't feel a strong connection with them, neither with the dalish or the city elves. He relates more to slaves than elves.

@ moto: Oooh, in which sims game? I have made the DA2 sims in the Sims 2 once. Especially Isabela turned out really well, I think. Unfortunately I lost them by reinstalling.:? Perhaps I will make them again later.
Fenris looks too bland and boring without his tattoos, though. I don't think any custom content creator has made them. Someone did make Isabela's necklace. And I am not even going to try making them myself. That will just lead to a lot of frustration with no actual result, haha. Would be really cool to have an actual Fenris sim.

Edit: I think I actually have hair that looks like Anders' (for Sims 2). I only don't remember where I got it from... If you're interested, I could check and go digging.

Hmm...I'll toss out one that someone suggested to me when I was writer's blocked - the first meeting after 'that night'?  Alternatively, when either Hawke/Anders or Fenris/Isy get together and how the other reacts, assuming that Hawke/Fenris don't reconcile?

I've been thinking, and playing. It almost seems like Fenris is ashamed of/for the city elves. I'm thinking he see's them as being weak. With some of the things he has said to Merrill, I don't think he has any respect for the Dalish. If he described himself I think he would list many things before 'elf'. I think he would say 'warrior' before 'elf'. Just my tired random thoughts! Thanks for everyone giving me things to think on. Just beginning Act 2 on this PT. Thank goodness Act 1 is OVER!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! I'm about to head off to work, but thought I would pop in.

First of all the quote from the short story is: "Fenris paused and stared at the man in disgust. He’d thought to blend in more once he’d escaped the Imperium. In a land where elves were free, certainly one more elf would go unnoticed? He’d been a fool, of course. How was he to know that so many of his people would squander their freedom living like frightened cattle? If his only choices were to either dress as meekly as the local humans expected their elves to be, run off to find the wandering clans that grubbed in the dirt for whatever scraps the human kingdoms threw them, or to fight… then his choice was clear."

I can't say I fully agree with you Moto. Fenris sees the drunken elf in the alley, and he is disgusted. He also remarks that the elves he has seen outside the Imperium are like "frightened cattle." The only connection he states is "his people," which is something he can't really help. He IS an elf, but he does not identify with them. The "scrounge in the dirt" is a nod to the Dalish, which he apparently despises for their arrogance. An elf can join the Dalish, but only if they follow the Dalish customs and rules and become Dalish. To Fenris, they exude presumed superiority and arrogance over other elves, which feeds his distaste for them.

I don't think it is self consciousness at all. I think these things come from the fact that he was a slave in the Tevinter Imperium, and these are "free" elves. He feels they should be doing more, and that they "squander" what is given to them. I also cite an interesting passage in the wiki about Tevinter:

"It is still legal for elves to be sold into slavery in Tevinter, and many elves choose to sell themselves into slavery to provide for their families. This results in many Tevinter elves who are not slaves being better off than elves in other areas, even if elven slaves fare far worse."

This basically says to me that in Tevinter it is better to be part of their "alienages" than to be a slave. It also says that the alienages that Fenris encounters outside the Imperium are probably worse than the ones he has seen in the Imperium. This again feeds his belief that the elves waste their freedom by living like frightened and meek cattle. I don't believe he is self conscious about being an elf, nor proud of being an elf, but just simply IS an elf. It is something he cannot help, but I don't think he dwells on it, and he constantly separates himself from other elves. Refusing to live in the alienage, refusing to recognize the Dalish as a viable option for him or any elf (You might as well say "If they flew into the sky, they could live in the clouds."). He also doesn't step in or become phased by someone calling elves "knife ears" or being deliberately prejudiced against them. If he is insulted directly he responds, but he does not seem to care about the plight of the elves.

As for Fenribela -- it comes down to the simple idea that "is it casual sex relationship?" or is it "something more relationship?" I actually agree that Fenris isn't someone who would just jump at a chance for "casual sex" or "sex buddies." However, he is also perfectly capable of making his own decisions and I think when it comes to Isabela he does end up having genuine feelings for her beyond just "I want to have sex!" As I said, respect is key with Fenris. It is suggested through banters and teasing and flirting that Fenris actually LIKES Isabela, and what is more respects her. He brings up not only her freeing slaves, but also her "insanity" in going into the storm to avoid the Qunari. He says these things with a tone of reverence and respect. He teases her, and he engages her in conversation. This is something he doesn't really do with the other companions. That says a lot about how HE feels about Isabela, and that it isn't simply about the "lets have sex!" Likewise Isabela, while flirtatious is actually a very loyal lover. She is "free with her affections," but she doesn't cheat or do anything her lover disapproves of once she has chosen one. She is very guarded, but as you see with her romance she is a lot more than just a "casual sex buddy" when she finds the right partner. That act 3 banter she actually starts as "I can't stop thinking about that night," and for Isabela that is actually something to note because it is her being invested in something. Likewise she challenges Fenris and in her banters she says things he thinks about:

"It's not about who's dangerous. It's about having choices made for you. Don't you wish you had the choice not to have lyrium stuck under your skin?" To which Fenris replies "I do." I simply don't think it is "we are using each other," but more like "I like you.. you like me.. lets see where this goes?" Fenris is perfectly capable of making the decision to have sex, and he doesn't make it lightly. This is true with Isabela as well as Hawke, and I think Isabela is very aware of this as well. She genuinely likes Fenris and has been intrigued with him since act 1. She isn't going to admit to herself that it is something she wants, but she also isn't going to hurt Fenris if she can help it. IF that were the case she would do her "love them then leave them" routine, but she doesn't. She goes back to him and practically says "I choose to be with you."

Gahhhh Wall-o-texting. SORRY SORRY... Happy New Year Arquen's WALL-O-Text for you all.

Because now.. WORK... JFKDJLSJFL:JA:JDKL:JLJL:!!

I feel compelled to share this with my fellow Fenris fans. A friend of mine was looking at Skyrim, and I linked her to a walkthrough where apparently there were some guards played by the lovely Gideon Emery. This is her reaction:

Her: BUT DID I HEAR FENRIS'S VOICE?!?!
Me: perhaps
Her: IS HE IN THIS OR AM I JUST DESPERATELY HOPING?!?!
Me: yes he is. he plays several guards if i'm not mistaken. its funny because you can go up to a group of guards and they're all voiced by him
Her: Omg. I love him. He should marry me.
Me: XD
Her: Or just his voice.

I'd add more, but its a little M rated. Lets just say that she was very happy to talk about Mr Broody.
