I have only done one rivalmance with Fenris (only rivalmance period).  I used an Aggressive/slighty snarky 2h M!Hawke warrior, who was very protective of Bethany (who ended up in the circle), and always looked up to his father.  Fairly obvious that he was very Pro-Mage.  It was also the first time I murder-knifed Anders.  He didn't even ask for anyones opinion, just yelled at him and knifed.  He saw the bomb as a trust breaker in his friendship, and emotionally felt that Anders had put Bethany in imminent danger...big no-no for big-bro.  Still sided with the Mages, of course.

Okay, probably more of a synopsis than anyone really needed, but.....the rivalmance with Fenris I thought was very genuine in this playthrough.  Especially considering how I RPed that Hawke.  However, there is one line that bothers me in the rivalmance, and it may be in part how the VA's (have also viewed it on YouTube with F!Hawke) read the line, but the question path during Act 3 QB, has a line referring to, "We're not exactly friends, Fenris."
Now, I realize that this sets up Fenris' line well (the whole, "perhaps not, but I still respect you"....), but this is also said right before you "get back together" with Fenris.  The tone always seems too dry, blunt, and lacking in emotion to start the whole, "I want you back Hawke"/"I understand all, Fenris"  smoochy smoochy.  I realize this is a bit picky on my part, but we only get a handful of LI scenes, and it's nice when they don't take you too far out of the RP moment. 

Well, that's enough rambling for now....sorry for wall of text. 
BTW, all other Fen romances (5 complete, 2 in play right now), have been friendmances.  Also have one Anders romance and one Isabela for variety, of course.  HA!

I am having a lot of fun with my rivalmance with male mage. On my first playthrough I also played a mage, and I friendmanced Fenris with her. I felt like a hypocrite there, because I had to keep sendiing mages to the Circle to get friendship instead of rivalry point from Fen.
So in the case of a mage, I think rival fits the most, even if the mage is not an aggressive Hawke. You can actually get rivalry from Fenris by chosing the humorous option (when you make fun of him being worried for meeting Varania, which is indeed a bit mean).

It's funny, my four mage play throughs all friendmanced Fenris (of course, two of them sided with the Templars in the end; baby bro was a Templar and those two Hawkes always looked up to Aveline - the whole law/order thing, protect the community idea, blah, blah, blah...)  On my pro-mage, Mage Hawke/friendmance play throughs, I usually do the following RP wise, so I don't feel disingenuous romancing Fenris that way: 

1) I always let him torture and kill slavers in Wayward son, then tell Fenryiel to go to the circle (I always just imagine I am doing as his mother asks.....very strong mommy complex.) Besides, in Night Terrors, I always let Fenryiel go his own way.

2) I DON'T take him on the Act of Mercy quest, and save the mages from the Templars.

3)Always speak out against blood magic during Long Way Home quest.
4) During the first convo with him in the mansion, I can usually come away with max friendship points (even without metagaming).

5)Finally, as soon as I get to Act 2 (usually after doing some of the Qunari related quests), I speak to him in his mansion, get his QB, finish that off, then head out of town to trigger a Bitter Pill.  Any left over points I need I get my fill during that quest.  Viola! He's maxed, and I can continue to support mage rights and freedoms however I choose.

This made me think.  How do you guys feel about a mage being in a friendmance with Fenris?  I always do friendmances, and I've done two mage playthroughs.  Every time it feels somewhat inauthentic.  Maybe I'm just playing it wrong?  

I'm not saying Fenris is incapable of falling in love with a mage, but more like ... the friendship romance doesn't quite give me the options I'd hope for?  I don't feel Hawke is able to sweetly woo Fenris as a mage.  Whereas, Fenris falling in love with Hawke DESPITE his being a mage (rivalmance) is more believable, as the game presents it.

I've done a rivalmance and friendmance with Fenris, and I feel that friendmance does work for me. But it's a lot more work, and that's why. I find a Friendmance on a mage with him is a lot more of a challange and therefore, more true to life for me. Part of the reason I think it worked for me is I was scarcastic Hawke, and the options, even when you're discussing something serious, make the conversation less weighty. My agressive Hawke was less believeable to me in a friendmance with him because everything was super serious and important. Scarcastic Hawke is never serious and that makes it a lot easier to make it work, for me.

The way it feels for me is that Hawke's personality is what wins him over. Not the choices or even what Hawke says, but how it's said. It brings laughter into his life when there wasn't any before. Well maybe not laughter, but something. An element of freedom that Fenris never really gets to experiance.

Hmm. That was deeply over-thought. XD

Edit-It also occurs to me that I really shouldn't try to express my feelings on the matter when hungover and falling asleep on the couch. I tend to ramble.

That was actually very well said. I completely agree with you on the sarcastic humour and how Fenris loves it because it brings laughter to his otherwise dark and difficult life. That's the way I see it too.

@Arcane- Well thank you! I'm glad I'm semi-readable, even when all 'Nuggggh. Brain. Melting.' I'm glad you see it that way too. Poor Fenris never really gets to be happy. Even when he finally gets Hawke it's awesome and then...Noooooot so much. *Pets him* Poor Baby.

@Ursala- WANT TO READ ITTTT. Not enough Fenris/Hawke Romance fic. Of course the entire fandom could be made up of it, still wouldn't be enough.

I'm pretty pumped to do another Rivalmance, Maybe with Anders? Though I hear it's really, really dark. So maybe not? XD I need to romance Merril still. And...Bah. So much game to play, so little time.

I played it on one of my already-done files, because I am so lazy. I was all '....NOPE, CHEATING.' I didn't get any romance banter, but he did say my blood was important and he wasn't all that shocked. Heehee.

I don't think they fixed that particular bug. Its probably not on their high list of priorities. Would be nice to have it working properly, but alas, we probably won't have lovely Fenris banter.

Could anyone please tell me how I get Fenris to suggest a duel with the Arishok at then end of Act 2?  I always take him with me but the Arishok always says I must duel him, must be doing something wrong?

Welcome to the Fenris Thread!

Is your Izzy's friendship or rivalry maxed out or close to being so? Because if it is, she'll always come back, and that's when the Arishok forces you to duel him. If she's on neutral, she won't ever come back after initially escaping, so that's when Fenris will suggest it. Hope I helped!
