Hours after a discussion, and now I chime in ^_^

I only recently started writing slash, and the experience has been quite...interesting. A little over a year and a half ago, I created this character for a Harry Potter RPG site. I had no real layout of his personality, other than he'd be a bit of a troublemaker. It was only after being asked about what sort of relationships he'd be in that I seriously sat down and started thinking about his sexuality. I try not to let characters that I write be limited by my preferences; they write themselves. Eventually I determined that he would be bi, focusing on two people (one male, the other female) during his life. What Anders says about focusing on the person, not the body they're in very much applies to this character.

While he currently does not have a relationship with any particular person, I have sat down to write some stories about his final 'ship. It is with another male, someone he knew during school. I write them with the mindset that its just like a hetero relationship, only with two guys. The person who originally posted this question mentioned something about it possibly being a way to explore the homosexual psyche. For me, its a way to explore my character's psyche. What is his motivation? Why would he do this? What is so special about this one person that makes him love him? It has been quite interesting so far and I enjoy writing the pairing. People that have seen those stories like how I've show the relationship. I haven't actually run it by one of my gay friends to see if he thinks its any good. I may have to do that.

And renjilty, I'm laughing at those pics because I'm picturing Fenris posing for them (mehbee Hawke is an artist?) and being like 'This is so stupid'

EDIT: TOP? Why thank you. Have a bunch of itty bitty Fenris'.

renjility: Ancient Tevinter is based off the Roman Empire. The Byzantine Empire, however, is much like the current-day Tevinter: the faded remnants of a dissolved empire.

kemz: I'm an anthro student. Not an expert, but this is the field I love. I study it for fun in my free time, as well as for classes. I'm not 'assuming'. Hunter-gatherers need to expand their range and migrate so that they don't over-hunt and over-gather an area and die out because the game isn't coming to them anymore, and the naturally-available flora isn't sufficient to cover their needs due to population growth. Small villages that are stationary, more or less? Yes. Permanent dwellings that are abandoned part of the year as they follow migratory herds? Yes. Large cities? Much, much less likely.

I presume you're referring to the Neolithic settlements found in Turkey. There is evidence that some of them had agriculture, including domesticated pigs and cereals. In the specific site you are likely referring to, Göbekli Tepe, for a it's true that for quite a while, no evidence was found. Some evidence, though not conclusive, has since been found that there was agriculture nearby, possibly some of the earliest known agriculture. Meanwhile, no hearths or middens have been found, which is a pretty strong argument that the 'city' was in fact a ceremonial site, and not actually inhabited; one theory is that it was a meeting place for hunter-gatherer clans. There's still excavation to go, so any of this could be subject to change; the site isn't going to be fully understood for a while, if ever.

I'm certainly not saying that hunter-gatherer cultures can't build lasting structures or temples! But even in a resource-rich environment like Neolithic Turkey, migration is required for the survival of hunter-gatherer cultures, which is not conducive to building large, inhabited cities like Arlathan.

Also, re: the halla, the Dalish don't eat the halla because the halla are their partners. Perhaps you recall the young hunter-in-training you can help hook up with the girl he loves? She's putting him off because he's not an adult, because he hasn't managed to actually successfully shoot anything yet and become a proper hunter. Additionally, they use a lot of leather. Now, I suppose they /could/ be killing animals and not eating the meat and just using the hides, but . . .

So... I'm going to ask this question again because I am annoying. Do you think Fenris and elves in general are vegetarians?

I too would say no.  Hunting is a good food source to people who are nomadic which I believe the Dalish elves currently are.  You could agrue about their history but working with who they are now I say no.

@ Harle: ah, I see. Thank you for the clarification. I know a lot more about the Roman Empire than the Byzantine Empire. Of course mostly because Rome is still such a popular topic for books, movies and tv series.

I don't think the elves are vegetarians. As has been said, the Dalish are hunters, and I think they don't waste much of the animals they kill. As for Fenris himself, he also doesn't really strike me as a vegetarian. Not that you get any information about it, but I think he eats meat and is not bothered by it.

In the past, I had always wanted to ask why women write m/m relationships, but I had always been afraid to do it. I'm thankful that all of you were very understanding and open to discussing it because the answers were not what I expected. Before you read too much into that statement let me explain.

Years ago I wrote Silmarillion FF. To make a long story short, the main body of the group predominately wrote m/m relationships with the elves. If you deviated from that, your stories were labelled Mary Sue, even if they were anything but. The overall theme was: I write m/m relationship because everyone else is doing it, and so that my story does not get labelled a Mary Sue. It had absolutely nothing to do with the people, it just mattered what was between their legs.A vagina was a no no.

So, the responses here blew me away. I was expecting someone to say: well m/f relationships are overdone, or I've read it all before or the woman is always too perfect. You get the idea. But, the explanations were so eloquently stated and left a good impression on me and educated me! Thank you for being so open. :):):) I love that everyone is very passionate about they write on this forum and that they understand why they write it. It's refreshing.

I love that meme!!! The problem with it is it doesn't really have a "name." So it's kind of hard to search for specific types. Like I know there was a "professor" one; I howled at that one xD (Cause I'm an English instructor.)

It is very funny that people readily accept a male wanting to enjoy two ladies getting it on, but people are shocked and amazed to hear that some women like to see/read about two hot guys :P Although in my case it's usually just one guy I find really hot, and the other is like, I dunno, a cute little thing for me to sigh and coo over? I'm looking at you, Fenris.

Oh no no no.  Fenris is the HOT guy, so that leaves Hawke (or whomever) as the cutie :)

That piccie of Fenris "fanning" himself will NOT leave my brain.  SO disturbing.  Love the rest though.

As for lanky guys, I picture basketball players builds being like Fenris - not the height, but the incredibly strong, lean muscle mass.
And as a huge fan of Gideon Emery, he has a great lean build - and sexy voice to boot!  :innocent:

I've only recently read m/m fanfic, and some I really enjoy, and others are a little much for my apparently amateur tastes, but I understand why women would like it.  I truly think it is the vulnerability and emotion, and as moto put it, not the "normal" woman/man roles.

More Fenris!  Ok, Fenris MLP - I couldn't help myself given the previous posts :P

I say not vegetarian. Look into the medieval diet. Pork, game meat, beef, fish, poultry both wild and domestic and bread (often flat) were common as was pottage. Now the poor ate raw fruits and vegetables at times but, such things were thought unhealthy so, produce was generally cooked or at the least soaked in honey and, it was more for flavor than any nutritional value.

As seems to be often the case, I agree with Ser Bard:

Awww thank you, now I feel a bit guilty that ME3 owns my soul (and time) right now. ;)

I've always wondered if the hella bond like the mabari but herd to clan rather than on an individual basis.

IMO the dalish tend to live longer because they have a better quality of life, regular balanced meals, less menial work and easy access to a healer/herbalist. Sure winters might be rough but they could prepare for it-like squirells.

Just as an aside, the halla are like horses for the Dalish; generally, people don't eat their horses (GENERALLY); it's a beast of burden and not for food consumption. But Harle was spot on by reminding us of the kid who needs to bring in a kill to impress his girl. I'd totally forgotten about that guy.

And dang, yeah, all that leather they wear, well, it has to come from somewhere!

As for Fenris specifically ... well, he's a warrior, so he has no qualms about killing people; doubt he feels sorry for cows and chickens. And his religion is scanty at best; he doesn't follow the Dalish religion, and although he does come around to the whole Maker thing (if you have Sebastian in your party) there doesn't seem to be anything in that religion to suggest its adherents are vegetarians.

Well, sort of.  To be honest with you, it's a question I've answered again and again, and it does get tiresome.  No one ever gets asked why they write het =\\  Sometimes I just want to say "Because I like it."  But the academic in me demands I offer up a reasoned explanation each and every time.

But yeah, I just like it.  I like boys; they are cute.  I like two boys together; that's cuter.  Voila :o

Actually, I have been asked why I write het and I've had people request that I write slash. *shrugs* I guess it depends on the genre.

I don't think people should ask us why we write what we write :P They should just shut up and enjoy it MWAHAHAH xD

I like writing slash, never post it because I don't think it's good enough. I mean the smut bits are great and the story is good, just not as fleshed out as I would like environment wise.

I agree every author has reasons for what they write, maybe personal, maybe as simple as it seemed like a good idea at the time. If it's good I could care less who wrote it or what gender they are but then, I am a bit of an Anders on sexuality anyway - you love all of a person, who gives a toot what gender they might be? Okay I know some do, but I don't care.

Agriculture/farming dates back to less than 8,000 years ago.  the Turkish community dates back nearly 13,000 years.  They were hunter-gatherers.

This is fantasy and we're talking about Elves with magical power -pre-human Elves who WERE IMMORTALS!!!  We don't even know if they "ate" food but could have existed off of some kind of  'manna' or nectar found in abundance? Humans were always mortal and depended on food for their sustenance.

Also, re: the halla, the Dalish don't eat the halla because the halla are their partners. Perhaps you recall the young hunter-in-training you can help hook up with the girl he loves? No creature is more revered by the Dalish than the halla. No other animal has a god of its own. These white stags are much larger than ordinary deer, and the Dalish halla keepers carve their antlers as they grow, making them curve into intricate designs. In ancient times, these stags bore elven knights into combat, but since the fall of the Dales, they are used less as mounts and more to pull the aravels. --From Codex entry: Halla

The halla are a type of horned stag that pull the Dalish aravel, or landships. The Dalish do not consider them beasts of burden but noble companions. It is said that the Dalish carve their antlers for decorative purposes.
Halla is a finnish word meaning frost.

People hunt small game, which is what I said. I don't think elves eat large game, however - no deer, bear, bovine, etc.

I don't believe Elves (like typical indigeous cultures) waste meat. I live in a small Alaskan Native village called Kotzebue and you are taught not to waste meat. I don't think elves would kill animals just for their hides.  Why couldn't they trade for leather?

Strangely, I can't stand to listen to him because the first time he mentions something like driving a car or going to a conference or having a pizza all I can think is: why is Fenris walking to the  Hang Man for a meeting and eating mystery stew?

But... mmmmmm the siren is calling.

I always thought it was interesting that Anders was the one who complained about being propositioned in the Rose instead of Fenris!

Actually, when you think about it, they all should be LOL Hawke is pretty much running around through Kirkwall with a bunch of super models.

Do you think pre-Justice Anders might have been more flattered than annoyed? ;) (Damn you, Justice!)
Maybe Fenris is too cross-looking to get propositioned... or following too closely behind Hawke to appear available.

Hawke's companions ARE all very pretty. Lucky lucky Hawke.

No problem ginger...frankly my spouse has been using it as joking fodder on my end. (I plan for revenge by choosing one particular image for him.)

Running around with super models? More along the idea that Hawke must be their pimp and just strutting out the goods for later tonight......oh god now I want to practice on unsavory thoughts involving that sentence.Never thought homework sound so good right now.
