Oh yeah, I've seen that! :D

I'm a little bothered by the fact that her Hawke has a hairstyle that doesn't even exist in the game :| I don't know why but I find that frustrating for some reason lol Also, the promise of "graphic eroticism." o.o I mean, since when did romance stop being enough lol Now people have to draw and write penises and boobs flying all over the place lol I say this of course as one who USED to write (mostly penises, no boobs) flying all over the place :P

Why do I find M!Hawke... oddly fitting? Especially for a sarcastiHawke.
"It can be a lot to take in, I know...."

Why, in art and... actually, pretty much everything fan-made, Fenris most often seems to get the 'feminine' role/pose/whatnot.  Am I the only one bothered by this? Fen's a fierce boy, someone make him look like it, damnit! *fistshake*
...or maybe I just haven't looked at/read enough...

Sadly, seme/top!Fenris art and fiction is actually out there lol As for me, I prefer uke!Fenris :P  He's so precious and cute!  And yes, fierce.  I love me a feisty uke/bottom!

I'm not so much interested in the promise of "graphic eroticism" as I am in seeing the artwork. I really like the style it is being done in.
As far as eroticism goes, my imagination is normally enough. :P

I think it's because he's an elf... when you put the build of an elf dude next to the build of a human dude, even in the game, the elf ends up looking either very young or feminine.

Though I agree -- while I really like the art on that cover, I've never seen a guy stand in the position that Fenris has there. Women have a lower center of gravity, and perhaps that's why such poses look more natural on them.
OR maybe it's because we have such a long history in art and advertising of putting women in ridiculous poses that they look normal to us now? (Okay, this is slightly tangential, but these photos are hilarious. Also these. )

Okay, I started down a looooong intenet rabbit hole of reading arguments about how women are objectified in advertising, but I'm not going to share it all with y'all because it's not really germane to Fenris.

Long story short -- too late! -- I think Fenris gets put in more feminine poses because of body type rather than personality. Though depending on your interpretation of the character, he can have a dependant streak which we tend to associate more with the female, which could also be a factor.

Oh gender assumptions, how riled up you can make me. I am closing my browser now, before I go all ranty. :?

For some reason, when it is a fem Hawke, most of the stuff I have read makes Fenris the "top", whereas when it is a male Hawke, most of the stuff I have read makes him the bottom. Personally, I think it's kind of unrealistic that he would ever be the top because Hawke is almost always in charge in the game, and I just don't see Hawke getting pushed around (f or m Hawke). At least, not for long. ;)

AbsoluteApril's post of yesterday (the odd animation thingy) and my own post have disappeared for me. Others can still see them?

As for the art and Fenris' role/position: I don't know, I haven't noticed it that much, I think. Of course it depends on the pairing, male or female Hawke, but I assume you are talking about the same sex pairing, where Fenris is portrayed as the feminine one. *browses through art* I don't have enough images of different... *cough* positions to say Fenris is most often the submissive one. But I think it's not that surprising if it would occur more often, due to the way Fenris and Hawke look. Hawke is usually very masculine, broad body, strongs muscles, a beard in the case of default Hawke... whereas Fenris is very slender and has more feminine features compared to Hawke because he is an elf. So perhaps it happens a bit subconsciously that people tend to portray the pairing in that way.

I'm not sure whether it occurs as much in fics as well. I tend to believe fics vary more, somehow. Maybe because you are less busy with how they look, but more with what happens inside their heads. That could lead to different interactions and roles. The type of relationship (friend/rival) influences this as well, I think. With rivalry I imagine a bit more of a struggle for the dominant role. Because their opinions differ strongly in this relation, and Hawke usually gets to say what to do (except for personal issues of Fenris, then it's always his call, Hadriana and Danarius), perhaps Fenris is inclined to assume a more dominant role in their romantic relationship. I'm not talking about any extreme things here, mind you. I imagine it as more of a subtle thing, subconscious even for Fenris.

Ehr.. I think I ended up rambling here for a bit. Anyway, an image of Hawke more in the feminine position:

I'm saving that first page. And I'm going to draw Fenris in one of those poses. It will be unrealistically fabulous.

Glad to see it wasn't just me noticing that, at least. Although, I'm really picky when it comes to things with Fenris. I tried reading a few fanfics with him in them, and barely got in at all before I gave up. For some reason I never seem to agree with how they're portraying him. I'm not even talking about dominant/sub/whateverelse, but more like... some of them seem to have too much of his aggressive side, others too much Mope and Brood(even for him)... and none of the ones I found seem to add in his lovely sense of humor. :( maybe I just have bad luck with fics.

Lol, I see I have been thinking way too long about my post. A lot of comments in between by now. xD

@ ginger: those pictures are brilliant, haha. It makes very clear how ridiculous those poses actually are. A bit... sad, really, when you think about that it's so normal for women to be portrayed like that.

I read a lot of FF, and I agree that I can't get into a piece if it goes against my sense of what a character would say or do. For instance, I hate it when someone writes the Warden or Hawke as a weakling needing to be rescued or as crying all the time (I've noticed a lot of this in f!warden and f!hawke stories. Um, Thedas would be doomed if that were true). Also, if the writing/grammar is horrible it is just so...not...sexy.  I give up a lot. But I have found that there are some amazingly well-written smutty stories out there. You just have to hunt for them.

The relation between being pushed around and be the bottom during intercourse escapes me. I'd say it varies with most couples who's top and who's bottom. Being bottom doesn't make you the weaker person, or even the submissive person. Sex is not that much of a power struggle, is it? I don't see why Fenris would never ever be top, even with the most dominant and aggressive Hawke. And a person who is always in charge could enjoy being led instead of leading being the leader in a personal, romantic setting. It's not that black and white, in my opinion.

Ginger, those links were glorious!!!!! I tweeted the first one LOL Yes and it's part of why I love m/m romance; I LOVE LOVE LOVE seeing a MAN in that role instead of a woman for once. It's awesome. But then I like to see the uke/bottom guy still be a MAN if you know what I mean, and if there's one thing I despise it's when fanfiction writers and fan artists change a characters LOOKS and PERSONALITY just to shove him into the bottom role and make him more "feminine" than he is in canon.

As for me, I never see anything particularly feminine about being on the bottom (man or woman); it is about a person's personality, and whether or not they crave that feeling of being comforted in the bedroom, of giving in to another person. I think Fenris, who is so bristly and moody and annoyed/embarrassed about being comforted in public by Hawke - I think the bedroom is where he can finally let his guard down with the one he loves, and that's why he DEMANDS loyalty from Hawke (i.e. why the romance breaks off if Hawke hooks up with someone else). Intimacy is a super special thing for Fenris because that's where he finally, finally shows some vulnerability, you know?

Ack, my eyes are bleeding from seme!Fenris pic ;_; hahahaha xD

Oh, sure, it depends on each couple =] But hey, in fandom we can make them do whatever we want, right?! :o wahahaha! xD

True. And it might not happen as much as I think that it does. It's just a kindof-pet peeve, so I guess it just bothers me more when I 'do' see it.

I have caught one or two like that. Someone would write their Hawke as this almost constantly wimpering creature, which is perfectly fine for original characters, but for a Hawke? It just... does NOT fit. Hawke's personality is, of course, completely up to each player, but still... they just Should.Not. Be like that. :pinched: (imo)

I think I worded things a little off. I didn't mean anything related to smut/sex/so on. I don't even bother with anything listed under 'mature' on DeviantArt(unless it's for blood and gore), and I skip over those bits in fics if I find them. I'm probably an odd one out for this: I'm not a fan of seeing or reading anything sexual. To me, that is their business, not mine. [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/unsure.png[/smilie]

I have found some good non-smutty fic as well. I don't just read smut or anything. Not at all.
