I dunno guys. See, from where I'm sitting, a lot of you have criticisms of Isabela - who is very easy to criticize. And, as usual, people praise Aveline for being strong, family oriented etc. etc.

I think Aveline is flat out boring. And socially retarded. haha

It's because when the **** hits the fan you want someone you can count on, who doesn't run away from a problem, put your life in jeapardy or be completely heartless at times. I'd take boring and honest over socialite any day. My criticism of Isabela stems more from her selfishness than anything else.

Yeah but you see - I'm a writer. Isabela is an interesting character. She's easy to pick on, too. As a player, I always deny her the relic. I always group up with Aveline. But as a person who loves character creation? Isabela is one of the best character creations. She does what she wants. She's sultry, she's sexy, she's deadly. Kind of a La Femme Nikita thing going on there, but in the form of a pirate. She drinks like one of the men. She doesn't hide her feelings, nor is she ashamed of having sexual urges. And, unlike say Merrill, she's not stupid or naive.

Aveline, though, bores me to tears. She's reliable. She's predictable. She's status quo; marginal at best. She can't be straight with men (no pun intended - though I do get repressed lesbo vibes from her) and can't express her feelings to Donnic. That little 7th grade b.s. she pulled on Hawke - lol... wow.

"Go talk to Donnic for me, k?" I hated that quest, to be honest. I felt like it was a waste of *my* time. Like the player's time - nevermind Hawke's. But I always blew right through it to get it over with, skipping dialogue that was boring the first time around. And I always wondered, "Ew what does she see in Donnic? All I see are fat hairy chops and a lack of personality. Hm. Wait. Maybe that's perfect for her."

I wished there were a dialogue option that said, "Grow the f*** up, Aveline."

lol.

The bottom line is, I think Isabela is just COOLER than Aveline. It's like the difference between Trent Reznor and Oprah. Which would be more trustworthy and safe? But which one is cooler? lol

I'm starting to feel my age. Oh I freely admit Aveline has her failings as a character. Trust me, there were times I wanted to punch her and tell her to get off her high horse.

From what I saw in the game, all the companions do what they want. Hawke has utlimate control in instances, which I found unrealistic, but hey, every game has limitations.

I find Isabela obvious. She has, to a large degree, one mode.  However, in a game where people are being oppressed, tortured, hunted and so on, she does provide much needed comic relief. There are also times she says something profound. But all the companions, save Anders, because I don't like him ;), make good points from time to time.

I'd argue Varric is much more fascinating than Isabela as far as characterization goes.

I don't think 'but a pirate' with Isabela. She's just a female version of the stereotypical sexy pirate guy with dubious motives and a penchant for knives and strange mustaches. She just has hips instead of facial hair.

LOL! I never said Isabela wasn't cool! Varric is more awesome than Isabela and way more cool. In certain contexts she's just wrong for the role.

*Excuse my murderous use of comma's

Varric IS insanely cool and interesting. A dwarf without a beard! And a slightly attractive one at that. Remember the dwarves in Origins? EW.

Which, sidenote, my husband started an Origins game and he made a dwarf character. I laughed because no matter how much he tried tweaking the facial features, the character still looked like a frumpy, dumpy dwarf. Certainly nothing close to what Varric looks like.

I have mixed feelings on Anders *and* Fenris, to be honest. I always choose Fenris as a love interest, because I think he's perfect for Hawke. Also, I hate politics. Anders is one of those political people. Writing up manifestos and reminding everyone he has a cause - constantly. But at the same time, Anders is "nicer" than Fenris. Emotionally, I mean. He's more open. He's affectionate. Fenris is an ass, honestly. Like, just an angry, bitter, mean little man. A grump is the best description. Fenris is a grump. In real life - I'd be his best friend. I'm bitter and grumpy too. We'd see eye to eye, and make each other laugh. We'd probably watch TV together and yell at the commercials for talking to us as if we're stupid.

Anders isn't a grump. He's just annoying. But sometimes it's cute.

Fenris is a grump, but really he's just crabby. And sometimes that's cute. I know he's an "elf scorned" and everything, and he loves reminding everyone about it 24/7, but the bottom line is that his grumpiness is harmless and endearing (Unless you're Hadriana. Then his grumpiness turns into 70%-justified murder. 30% cruel, twisted, and cold.).

Anders nearly killed an *innocent* girl, though. Or in some cases, he DOES kill her. He's a victim of stupid decisions and circumstance. But still... unstable much? lol

In Origins, I really liked the characters more, I think. It was hard deciding between Zev and Alistair. Alistair was very funny/cute/sweet but so was Zev. I liked having a harder time deciding between two nice guys, honestly. Zev was a nice guy. I know people can argue that, being that he's a goofy little assassin, but he went with the contract because he wanted to die. He knew my warden would hand his ass to him on a silver platter. So truly, he and Al were both nice guys. I liked having two nice guys.

Anders and Fenris were the angry guys. It was more of a "pick your poison" type of situation. Fenris is prettier, so guess who wins?

^You can deny the quest again after you find out she is in love with Donnic, tell her it was a waste of your time.

Anyway, I actually like both Isabela and Aveline. They are complete opposites, but yet they can learn something from each other, and by the end of the game, they have. Aveline learns from Isabela's confidence, her not caring about what other people think of her. Isabela can learn from Aveline's strong sense of responsibility. Although it may be true Isabela is primarily selfish, she is not ruthless and she can care about others. If really all that was always on her mind was her own pleasure, well-being and fun, she would not have bothered to free the slaves she found in her cargo hold. She freed them, while she knew very well Castillon would be really, really pissed. Same with Hawke. If she gets to know Hawke well enough, either as a friend or a rival, she comes back with the thome, risking her own hide. She has a good heart.
And I can't really blame her for looking out for herself first. She knows she is the only one who does that. Her mother sold her for a goat and what... three gold coins to a man who saw her on the market place. Her husband did not care about her as a person, about her happiness.
But again, that she looks out for herself first doesn't mean she doesn't care about others. In fact, her careless attitude protects her from expectations from others, and thus from disappointing others, letting them down. She is afraid of hurting people, but you can only hurt them if you let them close enough. And this is the difference with Aveline. Isabela runs from too much responsibility, and Aveline clings to hit. Aveline desperately wants to do her duty, to not let people down. These women may fear the same, but deal with it in opposite ways.

A very interesting dynamic, I'd say, with too well written characters.

Since we're discussing other companions anyway, a fun pic of the entire gang:

Well said Ren and nice piccie :D Seb and Bethany should have ended up together.

I was thinking about Varric and how...well... he is not the prettiest man, but his personality is so extremely awesome I would bed him in a second. That is some excellent writing to be able to give a character so much charisma you fall in love with them, well I did, for their personality. I wish more games accomplished the same feat.

By the way,  a little tidbit I found out today. It's shortened from the original conversation.

DId you know when Aveline says: Do you feel like a citizen, Fenris?"

Fenris says: "It feels, that alone has been a surprise."

If you did not complete 'The Long Road', (the quest that Trista loves most in the game:P) Aveline will reply with "I think I had a chance for that and missed it."

Fenris was referring to his romance with Hawke. Okay, back to the nerd corner.

Just throwing in my two bits and to say that I like all the characters xD I'm a writer, too, and it takes all types, the boring folks and the adventurous folks. Aveline is a boring person, but she's an interesting character (imo).

Aldy ~ That is so one of the hokies lines Fenris gives in the game xD Sometimes I just have to roll my eyes at how "woe is me" he can be. Yes, yes, ex-slave, etc. I get it. But still. STILL!

Trista ~ I love NIN! \\o/

Wow never let me post up a topic changer when IM near dead asleep and working photo mount fixative.

Looking back I don't regret posting. Mostly due to when I mentioned that site, yes those caricatures are stereotypes, but in the sense those stereotypes are real. Most of them were fabricated then slowly let loose that women of color, and to be fair noncolor, actually..well act like it.

Granted I could beat a dead horse with the topic, but it was just an inkling with what I deal with in the game medium, let alone others, but Isabela in general I just wouldn't interact with be it her real counterpart or game.

Blimey, Hence why Im more for Aveline, where yes she is boring and 'predictable', but once in awhile she breaks out her mold and does something you least expect. Or you know I try to help her along. Right I should get back to work before I get nostalgia thinking about my mom as Aveline.

:-O Another Artemis. This is going to be weird if you stick around because my online name has been Artemis for 15 years xD

Not much made me blush in DA2, but the goofy love scenes in DA:O kind of make me do; I don't know why. I can watch serious hardcore porn and just be like, boo, this is boring. But that cheesy Enya music comes on and those pixelated bodies start going at it, and I'm all, zomg I hope no one sees me watching this *_*

You watch hardcore porn? No way! Moto you just don't come across as the type on here. I'm in shock.

I didn't do those pictures Ren. They are by mediocre memory again. She mods some of them.

Fenris makes me blush too especially when gives Hawke that stern look and sometimes his half smiles. *swoons*

Not sure if it's how aldien got it but it's happened to me quite a few times if an enemy has a 'blast back' type attack. The funniest for me was when Varric fell on top of rogueHawke and because of the height difference it sort of looked like his face was in her ass.

Aaaah good times. :D

LOVE the group image of them all. Only thing is I like Sebastian as a  LI so seeing Hawkes sister in his arms doesn't sit well with my head canon lol...

Lol, he's only catching her because she fell off the table.:P Don't hate your sister yet, haha.

I figured the picture had something to do with an attack type that kicks your party on its butt (I hate those attacks. The wyvern in MotA did it constantly: throw Fenris on his ass, which costs him half his health, then the charge attack, which nicely destroys the other half of his health bar. Grrrr), but I have never seen two companions land on top of each other, hehe.

Edit: I am trying to work with the program that created that group image (XNAlara or something like that). I already have a Fenris model, and a Fenris half naked model. xD But I don't get how I can get his body in the position I want. I only ended up messing his limbs up, they bent at places they shouldn't bend. XD

On the subject of Bethany: I saw someone(can't remember who) in another thread saying that 'Fenris hates Bethany'. I never got that impression. Am I the only one? He seemed 'unsure' of her at first because she's a MAGE, but after that he seemed kind of... 'alright' with her. Even told someone(Anders?) that she was strong.  :?

Yes, he tells Anders that, implying that Anders himself is weak  Anders is quite annoyed xD

Nah I think he quite likes Bethany; it's even better if he's in a relationship with Hawke because then it seems like he's trying to be sweet to Hawke's little sister for his/her sake.  Adorbs.

Anders is weak and Bethany is cute as a button.

Fenris is a closet romantic I've decided. He's just so damn sweet.

Now I know Moto's porn activities. I'm not sure how I feel about that.
