(Gasps) Someone . . . else . . . who likes Cousland and Zevran . . .? YUS! (Throws a party) I thought I was the only one! XD

But yes, I love the "ironic" pairings. It's one of the reasons why I actually don't like Cousland and Alistair or even Hawke and Anders - especially if the former is a mage. They're too similar. And from a story point of view, there is no dynamic between them. The Mage/Bastard prince-Ex-Templar, Dalish-City Elf/bastard prince, Noble/Ex-elven slave, noble/elven assassin make far more interesting pairings because they are a stark contrast to what is expected in their society. They are defying it, and I think I speak for everyone when I say those kinds of stories are ones we all love to watch or read ;-)

Which, to be perfectly honest (and this is just my personal opinon! Fae, please don't bite my head off), if why I find the City Elf/Zevran, and Dalish Elf/Zevran pairings to be . . . well . . . boring. In my head cannon, my FHN presents herself at the end with Zevran, announcing that she and him are an item, and that she doesn't give a nug's ass what they think. She and him love each other and that's all that matters.

You know, I kinda wish Bioware had written in more reactions to the romances. Especiallywith the ones I pursued.

LOL! Amen! :D Exactly how I feel about Hawke and Fenris.

Funny thing was, I couldn't get into Zev's romance at all. I always played as either a mage or an elf and I hated HNF the first time I tried it. But! Since I was determined to get through the Zev romance this time around, I thought let's try something new. It just clicked for me, just like it did with Fenris and Hawke. It took every snotty part of the HNF family that I hated and turned it around into something I could see as love for the right reasons. I like to think Cous Cous started her life out as thinking of elves as servants and complettely dismissed them until she became a warden, was humbled, and met Zev. Now, I'm thoroughly enjoying the romance. Same with Alistair and Amell. I enjoyed the Dalish elf because she was on the same noble level as Alistair, being the Dalish are remnants of elven nobility, I believe, with the same social expectations. They felt like equals.  I also did love the city elf story immensely, but that Templar/Mage taboo is hawt. So the mage won me over in the end.

I too have a problem not playing as a mage. Everything else seems so boring. I like the power!!!!!!!

Do you really have a Cullen banner, Moto? What's wrong with you? I better add I'm joking before someone bites my head off. ;)

I LOVE CULLEN  I always hated that he wasn't a companion let alone LI even before I came to the BSN xD Also he is my sexy man type xDDD I can't get into elves... I want to BE the elf who shags the pants off the sexy man... though that said, Fenris is still my favorite character in the entire DA franchise <3

Really? I didn't peg you for a Cullen fan, not that I would know mind you, but I think this is the first time you have mentioned it on here.

I did enjoy watching Amell make him hot under the collar. That had me giggling. So mean to poor Cully. I just worry his romance might end up being too much like Alistair, or rather, there would be too much Alistair in him. That didn't sound right did it?

Have you done the stolen kiss mod for Cullen?

Ahahaha Yeah that did sound bad cause I'm not into Cullen x Alistair ewww xD

Ahh nope, well I'm on xbox so no mods, at least not "that" kind of mod. I did start an Amell female just to flirt with him though xD

So I'm out on a limb and no one's here with me. All is right with the world again. ;)

Why is it that most people can play human/human relationships and find them interesting (F!Cousland or Amell with Alistair, Lady Hawke with Anders, etc) yet so many people say elf/elf is boring? Am I the only one who... yeah, I don't need to finish that question. xD

I suppose it just depends on how you want to look at it.

-I LOVE Mage Elf/Zevran because it kind of brings the "sheltered innocent and experienced scoundrel" to mind. Granted, I know there was more sex going on in the tower than a brothel, but the fact remains that the Mage Elf has spent their entire life locked in a tower and knows next to nothing about life in the outside world, or their own people. Zevran, by contrast, has lived a very colorful life and is full of exciting stories of places he's been, people he's been with, targets he's gone after, trinkets and poems he's picked up, etc.

I also feel like the Mage Elf and Zevran have a lot in common emotionally. They are two elves who were both picked up by large organizations at an early age (the Chantry for EM and the Crows for Zev). They were imprisoned in a "gilded cage" where they were expected to behave a certain way under pain of death their entire lives. (S/he lived a life of comfort and education provided s/he submit to the Templars, while he lived a life of wine and women--or men, depending on his preference--provided he prove himself useful for the Crows.) Now they're free for the first time, exploring the world without their old masters breathing down their necks. Yet they'll also never fully belong among humans or fellow elves (both Alienage and Dalish) thanks to their heritage and upbringing. How can anyone not love that?

-City Elf and Zevran just kind clicks for me. Two non-magic elves living under the heels of humans their entire lives and now out and showing the world what they're made of. (Double points if the CE is a duel-wielding rogue who can gush with Zev about daggers, poisons and leather, and triple points if the CE developed a quirky sense of humour because of his/her upbringing.) I feel like it also has a subtle "sheltered versus experienced" vibe as the CE is implied to have never left the alienage his/her entire life, while Zevran most certainly has seen a lot of the human world. Zevran was also raised to make his heart cold to love while the CE comes from a loving community, which would be an interesting dynamic.

-Dalish and Zevran: I haven't actually played the romance, but I can see the appeal.

I just feel like going in with the attitude of "They're both elves, so what?" is setting it up to be boring. If you go in considering all the emotional, cultural, and psychological aspects of being an elf and compare their different upbringings, lifestyles, worldviews, etc, it can potentially be very interesting and very fitting.

That's not to say I'm totally against elf/human pairings as well. ;)

-I LOVE City Elf/Alistair because I feel like they have a very similar story with well-placed contrasts. They grew up mistreated by human nobles because of their heritage (Urion and Vaughan for being an elf; Eamon and Isolde for being a royal bastard), yet they remain (potentially) kind people despite it. The city elf was never accepted by society for being an elf and so found acceptance in the Alienage and Grey Wardens, while Alistair was never accepted because of being a bastard and so found acceptance in the Grey Wardens (and likely identifies with elves). They also juxtapose in that Alistair can gain respect anywhere he goes for looking human, yet he doesn't have a loving family. The city elf, by contrast, will always be treated differently for being an elf, yet has a loving family to make up for it. They kind of have what the other wants, yet being with him and the Grey Warden can gain the CE social acceptance that she never dreamed possible, while Alistair can share her family. (Especially Soris and his human wife and children.)

As for Hawke/Fenris: To be fair, I don't hate human/elf relationships on principle, but I don't want to be the human. :crying:

Better stop here. This post is getting way too long. >>;

I like to play as the elf, too. OMG imagine if you could play as Fenris and you had to romance Hawke. All your dialogue wheel options would read something like:

A. Answer with broody reluctance
B. Answer with biting sarcasm
C. Rage and throw something against the wall

D. <3  Option

@aldy - Big mouth?? Nonesense...I won't let you libel yourself! Besides, winos need to stick together. :D

As for pairings; I love'em all! Seriously. I have humans/elves, dwarves/humans, elves/dwarves. f/m, m/m, f/f. Though I actually only have one f/f.....not a huge fan of the female NPC romances in DAO and DA2, so if I am going to do only one, I often end up doing the opposite sex. I dig Morrigan and Isabella's characters, and I really do like Merrill (but you all know I am still trying to give her Herpty-Do Hawke, just to get past the "sibling" feeling I get from Merrill). Leliana never really tickled my fancy; she's cute, but her dialogue is just.....Zzzzzzzzz......oh, sorry. wut? ;)

Fenris/Hawke though, I just adore. And like Ren (and I suspect Flippy), I like to write up what happens in between those years of Hawke and Fenris' separation. One of the best ways I have found to cope with the "lag" in romance chit chat, after Fenris flees Hawke's bed, is I do the following:

1) If I have a CERTAIN type of Hawke, I take him/her to the Blooming Rose once or twice. If I'm buddy buddy with Issy, I might drag her along. If not, then I just have Hawke go by themselves.

2) I do the "Long Road" AFTER he runs from Hawke, and I only bring him along. This guarantees to make him very chatty, and of course, Aveline will mention Hawke's and Fenris' "relationship".

3) I be sure to force a few banters after the split, to again get the references (ex. Anders talking about Hawke choosing Fen, and Fen saying leaving was the hardest thing. Also, Merrill making the "puppy eyes".).

4) I play Legacy right before the Demands of the Qun and the Arishok duel. After the last patch, all the Fenris romance banter is now active (ok, it's only two, but still significant to me.) Plus his other banters just show interaction.

5) Once into Act 3, I take care of a few smaller quests (usually get Issy squared away), then I head to Fenris'. Do Alone and QB. Back together, YAY!

6) Then I spread out the Justice quest, MotA, and Murder of Crows (all have romance related dialogue/banter). This keeps that feeling of the relationship being very "present".....again, at least for me.

7) Then finally, the last straw. The Gallows scene is....well worth a "save"! heh! :D

need to read the responses but I had to add my little list of some of my all time favorite pairings:

DA2 my default is mage FemHawke x Fenris, I've romanced him 4 times now all with females, I do need to try the male one of these days I suppose.
My canon pairing, Diplo femHawke that idolized Dalish rivalmanced Fenris

Man. I miss the Fenris thread. Everyone here is actually nice and pleasant. Also, as a given, everyone here loves romance. I've been on the DA3 forum and wow - I didn't realize there were so many romance-haters. How sad for them! lol.

As I'm sure most of you have posted up every Fenris picture ever conceived, my return to lurking/posting here will be brought in with a horribly crafted picture (in MS Paint of course) of my own:

Yeah the DA3 forum is vicious. I dunno why you're playing BW games if you hate romance, honestly.

lol moto you mean my scribbles? hahahaha

I was like, "Should I magnify this and do it just right?" and then I reminded myself I was haphazardly using MSPaint. heehee

Man, though, you're so right. I don't understand it. Someone buys a game made by a company that has already resigned itself to incorporating romance into the games, and then they go online and petition the company to... stop?

That's like saying "I really like Victoria's Secret but I wish they'd stop designing so many bras..."

??!

dude, I'm gonna come clean here. I'm gonna be honest...

I think most of the people who hate the romance in the BW games have intimacy issues. (Because, you know, it's just a game. The npc's aren't going to get you pregnant or anything...) There I said it. (And I hope I didn't offend anyone...)

*bro fist* my fellow wino. I like how you think Coldy. I never considered spacing out the dialogue like that in order to make it feel like the relationship was still going. After Fenris dumped my Hawke, she took him to the Blooming Rose and made him listen to her excursions ;)

Fae now... I never said elf/elf was boring. I would prefer Fenris with an elf but that's not possible so I have my snarky Hawke give him lovin'. Usually it is a mage, though I have issues with that, but snarky Hawke is so funny Fenris can see past her evil magic voodooness.

The best bit of city elf/Alistair for me was when she invites him in to meet her family and they are all sitting around the table together and she gives him her seat. That was a big awwwwww moment for me, and I could see her family becoming his family too. I think they would accept him eventually. That was unfortunately also the pt where I used that mod to make him an ass and he dumped her when she made him king and she trusted him! o_O Bastard!

DA2 without romance is like buying a hula skirt and not expecting it to ride up your ass ;) Did that even make sense?? Oh well made me laugh. Come on Coldy you have to do one better ;)

Moto ewwwwwww. NO! Do not put the imagery of Alistair and Cullen getting it on in my head! Alistair is my go to place. You can keep Cullen. ;)

Trista... would this be Fenris the pet or Fenris the elf? I do get around. ;)

Heh, and the romance haters claim that sexually frustrated people use the game romances to feel loved because they can't get it in real life. =] Really, I've seen that argument pop up. A very sad point of view, I think. But that's just me. When a character in a story (be it book, game or movie) hooks me in some way, I'm really "into" that character for some time. Not as in having a crush on, but... lol, I don't know how to explain it. It's some kind of emotional hook. Hmm, maybe this explanation would only fuel the arguments of the romance haters.

Exactly my thoughts, word by word. For Zev my headcanon paring is CE/ Though for me it's mostly him opening the worlds of possibilities to her.

Why do we even discuss romance-haters? Fortunately it was already told that romances will take no less (and no more) part of the game as it was in previous games.

But speaking about romanses I was thinking about Aldien's suggestion about petition for Gideon return. Are you sure you want to here someone else speak with this magical voice? If it is not LI - you will be very apset. If it is LI - then you will always see Fenris in him.
I for one hope for another set of voices. Unfortunately the one I really, really want will never be used (just my luck and BW never use him for LI :crying: ). Still, I am looking forward to hear new hot voices  :)

*goes for a nap; comes back to find whole new page full of posts*
YOU GUYS ARE MONSTERS WHOA

Fae, mage elf/Zevran high-five! That was my very first DAO run and I love it to all the bits. Although, I went with "more sex than a brothel" Circle background for him. But I did love the romance for that same second part you described - emotional background. And I love that you can choose the "I don't remember anything before the Circle" lines to really hammer home how absolutely sheltered that particular Warden is. Suffice it to say, that particular romance was one of the best dynamics I've written to date. I don't care what people say, Circle Mage origin is awesome.

Also, I have a DE/Zev and it was great. Loved it, you really can write something... Hmm, how do I put his... Emotional, I suppose? But the again, I have a huge soft spot for the DE origin. At first it fell flat for me, like for many people, I noticed. But then it suddenly clicked. The scene where the Warden says goodbye to their clan - the only origin story moment that made me cry.

Arghh, I always wanted to try CE/Alistair! You can do so much with that dynamic! But it's in the same group as HN/Zev. I just don't have the time to write more than one character for each origin and romance that I've already played through. The only exception was made for the mage origin, which should tell how much I love it.

I have no actual qualms with playing humans, but when given the choice, I always choose an elf. My default first playthrough set-up if the choices are there is an elven mage.
Ah, race options... Let them not be just a pipe dream when DA3 cometh!

Coldy...
...
YOU'RE DOING IT AGAIN!
In my head! Stealing my thoughts! Stop it, you brain fiend! You dun' wanna mess with me! I'll wallpaper the whole room with tinfoil!
I do those exact same things with the Fenmance, except for the blooming rose, since Fen's got only one Hawke to himself and the sad sack ain't the type. But everything else - down pat to the last detail.
There's something eerie here, I tell ya. Someone's a doppelganger and doesn't know it *tinfoil hat*

April, I don't know if I told you before (I probably didn't), but I love your mage Warden! I usually don't go for the extravagant hair-colour and 'do type of character design with DA PCs, but on her it all just... works. Doesn't seem too animesque or out of place. My compliments~ She's also a cutie.
And, hey, white-haired mage Hawke! I have one too~

Ghost, good luck with your paper. I wish there was a non-weird way to wish "shall your skills be super sharp for this" or something besides luck.

Trista, hey, you're back! You don't know me, but I know you! Being a lurker is the tops, I really get to work that creep-o-meter. Also, that Fenart - gorgeous. I would know, I'm a failed art student.

ren, ah, you brought up that argument. People will say anything, huh? Do you think they really believe it? Especially considering how many people here are already married, the argument rings hollow. Hey, I probably played more DAO/DA2 when I had a girlfriend, than now. I think there's link between these two events....
I completely understand what you mean about a connection. It's not so much a romantic attachment, but just... Genuine human interest and empathy.
