I think it's cause the way his mouth is shaped, :3 I think! I am only just older than Amirit in the area of ME relations. Yah, I get kittenish vibes from his adorable little mouth.

This. There's also a common notion that he has purring undertones in his voice when speaking quietly.

As for the forum drama, from what I gathered, it originated because of infighting within the Miranda thread. Which led the mods to notice that people were just not being very friendly overall.

Concerning Varania, I've never liked her either, but that doesn't mean killing her solves anything. And chances are Fenris will regret it later. It's just like Bartrand: he might be a bastard (and he's done worse things than Varania), but I always let Anders heal him, then send him to the asylum instead. Because I don't want Varric to have his death on his conscience.

Edit: *sigh*

Here are some oldies but goodies. Can't remember whether I've posted this here or in the Anders thread before.

Flesh, ah, I suspected it to be the culprit. I guess that shape doesn't really invoke cats in my mind and that's all there is to it XDD

Nilf, the flanging effect? Huh, now that I did not think of. It is not far fetched though. I have broadened my understanding.

I'm still a bit confused. What happened to what board? It was deleted? Archived? I haven't visited the ME2 boards in a loooong time, didn't know anyone still hung out there. Phooie on missing the drama though.

I have only one character who encourages Fen to kill Varania. I personally am for keeping her alive. Bartrand however, I have no side. I think the argument is valid for both actions (the burden of killing him vs the burden of caring for a delusional psychopath who's barely Bartrand anymore). And the character split is likewise 2:2 on this one.

Haha, those pics are the tops XDD Man, did we really just spam a whole page, discussing a silly old gif? That's humbling.
Baw, where is everyone? Real life suddenly become more tantalising?

MrFlipFlops - really? You do not see it? The mouth, the way he looks, keeps his head - it just first thing comes to mind. Not to mention when he talks it's like he purrs :)

Ah, had to read Nilfalasiel's answer first. Still, all statements are correct :)

Hillarious screens,  Nilfalasiel !

Amirit, no, I don't and that has always perplexed me. I am thoroughly familiar with cat behaviour (I always had a cat, ever since I was a toddler) and recognise the patterns fairly well in other felines or just imitators, but with Garrus... His mouth looks like :3 sometimes, yeah, but its modeled more after a cat’s nose-whisker area, not the mouth, so the association is lost on me at that. And like I said, I never heard the flanging effect all turians have as purring. I love it, it's pure audio erotica, but I don't get "purring" from that.
Ah, not like it matters, we are talking about a space raptor with Batman Syndrome XDD My inability to make kitty parallels hardly hampers anything, Garrus is still great.

No arguments here about his greatness :)

May be you are just too much of a cat person and need much more to notice similarity. I bet you can tell one cat of the same color from another just by their faces :)
(Though, if you DO see something about nose-whisker area - then you you have to understand, no?) Ah, nm. To me it's a typical cat with pressed ears :)

Amirit, maybe I am just approaching it far too academically XDD But I can't stop now, it was drilled into my brain (You will know the name of every bone in a feline/canine, silly student!).
I do notice the elements that bring people to the cat conclusion, but they don't come together to form a distinctively cat-like image in my mind when I see Garry. It's like I can make a point of how the yahg look like spiders (number of eyes, weird protrusions on chin look like fangs), but that still doesn't make Spiderman come to mind each time you see one XDD
With Garrus I just see a dinosaur, and a very avian one, especially from the profile.

Why can't you play? And don't worry, pictures of turians are hardly terror-tactics XDD

When your little one literally jumps on your head - it's hard to play or do anything. Sometimes I get a few seconds to post another off-topic :)

Glad we share at least love to the turians in general. And I think I understand your point better now, since yahg looks like a fly to me and nowhere near a spider :) (I do not like spiders, I am arachnophobic in fact - means, too familiar with the subject (like you and cats) from the opposite angle) We need someone very fresh and unfamiliar with turians without cat-affection to judge.

(my son called Thane - "a skeleton" the first time he saw him. Talk about associations!)

Amirit, the yahg don't remind me of spiders at all, I pulled that out of my ass just to make a point. Logically you can see all those traits, but that doesn't make them any more spidery in your eyes was what I tried to say.
A fly?! Whoa... That I did not expect XDD Flies are freaky buggers like all their insect brethren, but I don't see yahg in them. But that's the underlining point in all this - such associations are purely subjective and vary wildly, so trying to distill a right answer here is just alchemy.
And, yeah, turians rule!

I guess I can see where he got if from. The large black eyes are like the hollow eye-sockets on a skull, and his jowl area (where the red skin is down to his throat, under the protrusions) kinda looks like the sharp angles of a skinless jaw...

Thane is pretty creepy physically, when you stop to think about it. Doesn't stop me from liking him. And mourning the assassination of his romance in ME3.Posted Image

*hugs Garrus for comfort* At least they didn't screw you up!

As for yahg and flies...closest I can get is that their mouth looks a bit like a venus flytrap, but other than that, I got nothing...

I guess I understand where did he get that skeleton from but I did not see it at all before - anything but that. Though, "frog boy" also was not my association either.

Amazing, how subjective it can be. Glad that at least with cats there are others who can see it :)

For the fellow Garrus-fan - anything! :) Picture comparing a fly and a yahg is left as a link only :)

Like the Dragon!Kitty definition! Btw, is it only me or there is some similarity between him and Fenris? The way they both moove, I mean. Probably just the same animation.

edit to add - after reading Chris P's post about the ME character forums being closed for now, I just wanted to say how much I apprecaite the Fenris thread and how, even when we have differences, people are still decent to each other and generally very respectful of other people's opinions.

Um, hi!

I kinda officially just de-lurked/outed myself over at the DAIII forum (on a thread with a hilarious title!), and I wanted this to be my next stop on the boards because, well, Fenris is possibly my favourite DA romance yet, which is saying something since I haven't even completed it yet and my fem!Cousland Warden married Alistair in my DA:O playthrough. (That's her on the left, by the way. Say hello, Selene!)

Before I really started playing DA2 I'd heard a lot about how Anders was the best romance option in the game, so epic and angsty blah blah blah, but then ... Fenris happened. As soon as I heard that voice I was ALL about the hot, "broody" (thanks Varric!) elf boy. It didn't even twig that his VA played Balthier in FFXII until I read it a few pages back on here. :) I was a huge Balthier fan!

So ... going on with the romance, Fenris is just such a good fit for my rogue Hawke (first name Valena; she likes being witty most of the time, but some of the more serious quests in Act II have got her to act a little more diplomatic). Sure, I've flirted with Anders and stuff but ... I can't really get into it. I just can't imagine my Hawke saying the corny, epic lines like she does, like they're two starcrossed lovers acting out their doomed romance on a stage. I dunno, maybe I'll really give Anders a go in my next playthrough but for now ... Fenris wins. :D

I mean, Hawke actually talks to Fenris like someone attempting to have a real conversation! Listening/watching their scenes, it actually feels like two adults giving each other time and space to grow and get to know each other like ... well, as close to normal people as Fenris and Hawke can be. ;)

Plus ... listening to Fenris open up to friendships with some of the other companions as the years pass (Aveline, Sebastian, Varric, Isabela) feels as rewarding as the actual romance. With Anders it just feels like the opposite, since his agenda takes precedent in EVERY conversation he has.

I DO like his friendship lines with Hawke, though. They're much more relaxed and genuinely friendly.

Anyway. I'll stop rambling now. Hi everyone, it's nice to finally come out of the shadows and post in here. :)

First, hello there! This is an excellent next stop since those of us haunting this thread are the most awesome by far. B)

Also, Selene may be one of the sweetest looking Fem!Couslands ever, my male!Cousland, to the left, says "Hi sis".

Before I really started playing DA2 I'd heard a lot about how Anders was the best romance option in the game, so epic and angsty blah blah blah, but then ... Fenris happened. As soon as I heard that voice I was ALL about the hot, "broody" (thanks Varric!) elf boy. Bah, Anders, he is a fun character and I even have a romance for him but not near as entertaining as Fen. Gideon Emry has a totally drool worthy voice, so it's no surprise you liked Balthier and Fenris.

So ... going on with the romance, Fenris is just such a good fit for my rogue Hawke (first name Valena; she likes being witty most of the time, but some of the more serious quests in Act II have got her to act a little more diplomatic). :D

I have always found Fenris a great fit for both Sarcastic and Aggressive Hawkes... I think just the way I play Diplo:Hawke (which is rarely and gently) he would just make them cry. Sarcastc Hawke and Fenris have some great lines in Legacy and Mark of the Assassin that I think you'll like when you get to them. Plus you joined at the right time since they only just fixed the dialogue bugs awhile ago. The wait was excruciating.

No worries about flirting with Anders, it's kinda impossible not to without being a huge jerk to the guy, but be very careful, Fenris has the touchiest of all the romances,(be it bug or personality trait it suits him) it doesn't actually take a whole lot to break it I have found.

Also, once you start playthroughs romancing Fenris it's hard to resist him, lol. I had a plan to romance everyone at least once, I ended up romancing Isabela once, Anders half of one and the other four were all Fenris.:pinched:

I mean, Hawke actually talks to Fenris like someone attempting to have a real conversation! Listening/watching their scenes, it actually feels like two adults giving each other time and space to grow and get to know each other like ... well, as close to normal people as Fenris and Hawke can be. ;)

Which isn't very close to normal people, but we work with what we've got.:P

I agree, they seem to start out as friends, even though my male Hawkes are super flirty with him all the time. When you finish your playthrough be sure to let us know what you fave scenes were.

Plus ... listening to Fenris open up to friendships with some of the other companions as the years pass (Aveline, Sebastian, Varric, Isabela) feels as rewarding as the actual romance. With Anders it just feels like the opposite, since his agenda takes precedent in EVERY conversation he has.

Yah if you want peaceful conversations and friends any of those characters work, I just never run with Fenris/Merrill/Anders, unless I am a pro-mage!mage rivalmancing Fenris, then the trolling, oh the delicious Fenris trolling.

I DO like his friendship lines with Hawke, though. They're much more relaxed and genuinely friendly.

Yah, I deviate in between Aggro and Sarcastic, I have said it before, but I find Fenris to be one of the few characters where you can't just pick replies closest to the companions personality.

Anders, Aveline, Sebastian, Merrill, Bethany= Diplo, Isabela and Varric= Sarcastic, Fenris: Bi-polar to whichever tickles his fancy at the moment. I have gotten rival points for diplo, friend points for aggro... he just is all over the place, or possibly my game is uber-bugged. I like it though.

Anywho, hope to see many more posts from you in here and in the DA3 threads. (Don't be worried your in the wrong thread if you come to post and there is a lot of ME talk, the conversing seems to involve a lot of Bioware in general lately.

Welcome de-lurker! Always nice to see a new face.

Blegh, Anders. It's a good thing you chose Fenris, haha. ;) If your character is pro-mage, don't be afraid to go the rivalry route with Fenris. Rivalry does not mean hate, and it can get pretty steamy between Hawke and Fenris.

miss_rosie, heya there! I’m not the new guy anymore XDD Always great when more people join in on the gabbing! Don’t go lurking back now, the Fenrisfans are chatty folk.
What was the hilarious thread? Just curious.

Haven’t completed it yet? Why not?! Kidding, of course. This is even more fun, since I love listening to people’s first impressions of things, so make sure to share the Fenris-themed goodness.
Selene is a cutie, I always loved that hairstyle. What class? She kind of looks like a warrior lady to me.

Valena? Where have I heard that name?.. Somewhere else fantasy-related. Did you make it up yourself or borrow it from somewhere?
Ahaha, yeah, the Anders flirts are priceless in a dopey kind of way. I can’t imagine most of my Hawkes saying that stuff either, only the one that’s with Anders spouts such things on a daily basis XDD It’s a very fun thing in its own way. Give him a try with a different character sometime.
But, yay for Fenris! And witty-diplo rogues. And rogues in general. And wittiness. Those lines are horrid, but in a good way.

Yeah, I love the friendship aspect of Fen’s romance, it goes great with the Hawke I wrote for him. By the way, at what point are you now?
Seeing friendships in that group is a joy all in itself. Even the ever driven Anders with Varric are great, what with all the torture fantasies… Which Fen buddy act is your favourite? I can’t choose, though the Donnic thing really intrigues me.

Don’t go back to the shadows! More people are so much fun.

Huntress, +1 to Seb ban. Well, I’d never do that outright, but he has come the closest than any companion character in any game to making me hate him, which is srs bsns, since I’m usually such a rosy-cheeked love flower of a person.
I haven’t seen you here since forever… </creepy long-time lurker knowledge>

Fleshdress, yeah, I have got to capitulate on the accent thing. I like that part. Blast you, Russia, and your lack of anything!

Welcome, miss_rosie! Always good to see new people!

Anders is definitely not for everyone: he can be both heart-melting and infuriating at times, and always intense, so if you don't like it, don't force yourself. Stick with Fenris, no one will blame you (especially not here!). I love them both (with a preference for Anders, nonetheless), but I can understand that it's not everybody's cup of tea.

Also, funnily enough, I have more problems with the pacing of Fenris' romance than I do with Anders' (looking at you, three-year gap).

MrFlipFlops wrote...

That would be DAO: Valena's the name of Owen's daughter (the drunk smith in Redcliffe), the one you can rescue from Redcliffe castle. I just did that quest with my Tabris Posted Image

Gotta agree on the silliness of Hawke's lines. Although some of the Fenris flirts can feel seriously out of place too. "Waste of a perfectly handsome elf" comes to mind.

Something I've been wondering though: how much of the 'overdone' quality of some of the lines can be attributed to Varric's exaggeration? It is still him telling the story, after all, even if there are only two completely extravagant passages which are clearly invented (the 'fake' beginning and the break-in at Bartrand's house).

Huntress, +1 to Seb ban. Well, I’d never do that outright, but he has come the closest than any companion character in any game to making me hate him, which is srs bsns, since I’m usually such a rosy-cheeked love flower of a person.

Add me to the anti-Seb group. Sexy Scottish accent, yes. But it's not enough to redeem him for me. And that's saying a lot.

Oh, and one more thing: "Maker, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

That is all.

Fleshdress, yeah, I have got to capitulate on the accent thing. I like that part. Blast you, Russia, and your lack of anything!

Nilf, yeah, I remembered it a few minutes after posting. No wonder I associated the name with a blond person.
Tabris, eh? Who ya romancin’? :B

Silliness is the beauty of it! The sandwich line in particular is greatness. It's so utterly random, even for derpsnarky!Hawke. I'm so sad that Kromis is actually more hammy than silly, so I go for the "never leave" line with him. Aw, sandwich poetry, you are unattainable...

Yeah, I have a love/hate relationship with that particular Fen flirt. I love it for how mind floppingly incongruous it is and the awkward chuckle Fenris lets out in reaction to it, but on the other hand... Ugh, seriously, Hawke? You big lug of charm you.
I went around the problem by writing Kas as always honest and shamelessly blunt. Good thing he’s more of a listener and is usually laconic when voicing an opinion. That way I still get to hear the line and Hawke doesn’t seem like a serial pick-up artist, just inappropriate, but at least it’s in character. Diplo lines are surprisingly great for that kind of personality, since they’re either earnest or flat Captain Obvious-style statements.

I imagine that if the game doesn't explicitly point it out, then nothing is exaggerated behaviour-wise. More for headache reduction than anything. I'm not a good enough writer to be so meta when creating characters.

"MAKER NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"
I love that part. It's distilled hysterical derpiness. Really changes the mood of the whole sequence for me XDD

I am, yes. Though now I'm residing in China. And studying to go to the US of A. Also, I'm a pirate zombie robot ninja frog
Belarus? Ah, I love Belarusians, the ones I've met were the nicest and funniest people of ever

Haha! I would never dream of romancing Sebastian (waaaayyy too much of a Chantry boy for me) but I do like his voice (A LOT) and his quite remarkable blue eyes. :3 I actually imagine him to have a somewhat calming effect on my Hawke ... as mentioned, she has a tendency towards the sarcastic responses, and while I wouldn't have it any other way, I RP her interactions with Sebastian kind of like I do with Aveline - a genuine friend, definitely more grounded and cool-headed than some of her other friends. ;)

I don't *think* my Anders flirting has broken the romance ... last time I used a flirt line, I think, was before Bitter Pill. During Anders's Questioning Beliefs quest I didn't use ANY flirty lines.

Also, I've had a talk from Isabela about Fenris, and more recently, a talk from Varric (the Friendly Concern quest, I think). Sarcastic Hawke's response to him was priceless:

Varric:  "You do know the elf is covered in spikes, like an angsty porcupine? He might have some.. issues."

Hawke: "In all the time you've known me, have I ever given you the impression that I was turned off by crazy?"

XD

I know it was the same for the other romances ... but still ... I loved it. Angsty porcupine indeed ...

Awwww thanks! :D Selene says "Hi bro!" And giggles at the compliment. :3 Soft and sweet on the outside, tough as nails on the inside!

MrFlipFlops: she's actually a rogue. I really have to try deviating from the rogue path some day ... but I just love the class too much! Selene maxed out on the dual-weilding skill tree though, and her second specialisation was assassin, which makes me think she's quite a *tough* rogue.

Valena Hawke - good to know I chose a genuinely Ferelden name for her! ;) Thanks for the tip-off, Nilfalasiel! (Also, is that your Dwarf Commoner warden on your left? I LOVE her!) I must be about halfway through Act II: Fenris left :crying: but I'm holding out for Act III. I was genuinely moved by the romance scene and its aftermath ... maybe because I did the Bitter Pill quest all in one go. I love the emotion that comes through in Gideon Emery's voice acting. :'(

And then there was All That Remains ... what an emotional wreck I was after completing THAT! Fenris coming to visit after was ... just ... *sniffle*

Gotta agree on the silliness of Hawke's lines. Although some of the Fenris flirts can feel seriously out of place too. "Waste of a perfectly handsome elf" comes to mind.

I never did push that line on him. XD I think I chose the diplomatic or humorous line in that dialogue ... is it the one right after Hawke and Fenris meet? I just couldn't imagine my witty Hawke giving the attraction away in that first conversation. ;)

Hi! I like them both, doesn't matter if rival or friends this 2 characters are just great! it feels as they have  souls, Anders has an agenda but don't we all? Posted Image

Hi Huntress! You're quite right of course. :) I do have a lot of love for the Hawke/Anders friendship right now, and I do intend to do a Hawke/Anders romance playthrough soon ... after I get Fenris out of my system. But ... that might take a while!

Thanks for the welcome! :D I'm friendmancing Fenris at the moment - I got quite far along the friend path in Act I just by being a bit gray in my decisions and being agreeable towards him during their first real conversation at his mansion. I got locked into friendship by being pro-Fenris and anti-slavers during Bitter Pill and other conversations they had ... but I would love to try the rivalmance in another playthrough, maybe with a mage Hawke.

Oh, I should mention that I live in the UK where it's currently raining like ... like at the Battle of Ostagar! I've finished work for the day and I have the whole afternoon ahead, to myself ... getting further on DA2 and the Fenris romance MIGHT be on the agenda! ;)

Thanks for the lovely warm welcome, everyone ... I will try and post later with any new impressions. In the words of Merrill ... "Gosh, that was exciting!"

Nilf, yeah, I remembered it a few minutes after posting. No wonder I associated the name with a blond person.
Tabris, eh? Who ya romancin’? :B

Well, I'm still debating. I'm missing the achievement for feeding Alistair to the Archdemon, so that was my plan. Originally, I wanted to string him on for a while before switching to Zev (so I could get the "sanest thing I've ever done" dialogue, which I haven't seen yet). But now I'm not so sure I can be this heartless. Besides, I'm not sure a Tabris could romance a human after what happened to her. So I might just stick with Zev all the way through and then simply let Alistair take the hit without any emotional baggage.

I've not actually had the courage to pick the sandwich line yet. Then again, my first Hawke was a goody two-shoes (I'll have to redo her, diplo is definitely not for me), so it made more sense to go the hammy route. Second Hawke was a snarkmeister for Fen, and third Hawke was a douchebag that I pawned off on Izzy, so I've not had a chance to go back to Andy yet.

The chuckle is all kinds of adorable, but, as you say, who turns a statement about ripping lyrium from someone's flesh into a flirt?! Especially after just having met the guy and seen that he has a very distinct issue about his "former slave" status. Still, I guess it works with a brutally honest Hawke.

I imagine that if the game doesn't explicitly point it out, then nothing is exaggerated behaviour-wise. More for headache reduction than anything. I'm not a good enough writer to be so meta when creating characters.

You're most likely right. It's just that some of Hawke's lines are so facepalm-worthy that it's less embarrassing to think that it could be as a result of Varric's embellishments.

"MAKER NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"
I love that part. It's distilled hysterical derpiness. Really changes the mood of the whole sequence for me XDD

Well, I can't watch that part anymore without breaking into a snigger, so it definitely defuses the tension Posted Image

I am, yes. Though now I'm residing in China. And studying to go to the US of A. Also, I'm a pirate zombie robot ninja frog
Belarus? Ah, I love Belarusians, the ones I've met were the nicest and funniest people of ever

Hah! On behalf of my countrymen, I thank you Posted Image Also, China? That's certainly an unusual place to end up in. A pirate zombie frog? In the words of Alistair: "That's got serious potential."

Yeah, that's Greta Brosca. She turned out prettier than her sister, which made the Origin story rather amusing. She's my only Warden to have sacrificed herself. I was sad to see her go...in fact, I may just redo her ending and keep her alive at some point in time Posted Image It won't do to leave Zev heartbroken. Plus, she would've totally been best buds with Sigrun.

Yeah, that's the one. Serious case of foot-in-mouth disease there, Hawke.
