Amirit, they really aren't very good. They're not terrible per se, but nothing to write home about either. The same with the DA books. Writing for video games and writing novels are two different things. I mean, Drew practically created the ME universe and I think everyone here would agree that when it comes to making character for games Gaider is the man. But their novels are bit too dry and literal, since the medium is different. I think they're just not used to it any more.
To piggyback on the current discussion, I read all supplemental material because when I like a world I'm basically a stalker for it. I must know all the things. It's not irritating for me, I think, because the only things I personalise are my own characters. Excessively, as you might be aware. As in, months of writing. Yay, priorities. So if a DA book suddenly featured Kassander Hawke (hahahaha) liking fish I'd flip my ****, but that is as likely to happen as me building a functioning rocket out of tissue paper. The actual characters in the game world that aren't the PC? I don't personalise them anymore than I personalise my friends or anyone around me. Sure, I have my own interpretations ("Ah, he probably did that thing because of x!"), but nothing more. Due to that, if some of my assumptions are proven incorrect I just treat it as such - I was wrong, it happens. Same when I thought a friend of mine liked power metal turned out not to like anything that heavy. I interpreted her tastes incorrectly, she didn't actually change. But you are all right that these games are a very personal experience, so however you decide to actually experience them is right for you.
Ahhh, it's so good to be back! Dang uni, with it's exams and useless term papers. Bah, who needs a degree if it keeps you from the interwebs?!
aldien, I am very glad that you started posting again. It's really delightful to see you back. Just wanted to say that))
Happy Holidays, everyone! And lots of Fenris-y goodness!
