I personally prefer going the friendship route with him, especially with a mage. The main thing about rivalry that I hated was how Hawke says "we're not exactly friends, Fenris." That bugged me, because my Hawke did see him as a friend, he was just a bit pushy in his mage acceptance, but he still loved/desired being with Fenris. Beyond that, rival just really irks me in a way I can't put my finger on. Friendship is definitely my favorite.

Yeah, that line is a bit unfortunate, but it can make sense in a romance setting. After Fenris leaves, it seems that they kinda drift apart and don't speak as often as they used to, because that night continues to stand between them and neither can truly move on. I imagine that a rival Hawke will be less agreeable about the situation and therefore doesn't see the three years of heartache and awkwardness as friendship.

You're right, that's true. My rival Hawke didn't feel that way, exactly, he was just more confused than anything (and I really hate how BW didn't impliment a way to go talk to him and let it be a mutual thing). I can see how some would find it awkward in the meantime between the initial night and getting back together. My friend Hawkes always considered him a friend, and took what they could get in the meantime, like offering to teach him to read.

I do like the friend/rival system well enough, and BW will never be able to write for every single possible situation, so I can forgive that easily.

It's interesting because my very very first playthrough was a pro mage diplomatic mage. She was nice to everyone including Fenris but always chose to side with mages no matter what. I thought it was an interesting dynamic with Fenris since she rivalmanced him but didn't dislike him at all but HE didn't approve of her. So it was sort of like from Hawke's POV she completely likes and respects him (friendmance) and from Fenris' POV he just sees her as a mage seeking power (rivalmance).

Idk, I don't think I'm making sense.

I almost always rivalmance Fenris because I won't compromise my support of the mages (Go mages!). But I never got the feeling that he didn't approve of me, not once. His increasing rival points indicate he doesn't agree with my actions but I always felt he respected me and believed in me despite my being a mage. And seeing how I never sought power for myself, I'm convinced he knows I'm not in it for that. In fact, I'm certain he would leave me the second I did anything remotely power-hungy and inform me with a sneer that I was a traitor, a fraud, a liar and that he would do anything to stop me if I went further than that

I know he lashes out ("what has magic touched that it didn't spoil") but it was so obvious (to me) that he regretted what he said the moment he said it. Perhaps it was the look of surprise and hurt on Hawke's face that did it? Which would explain why he went for his usual "I need to get out of here" line and exited.

Haha, on my first playthrough I soooo desperately wanted to talk to Fenris after he had walked out so suddenly. I was still squeeing that the romance had finally hit it off when the fade to black... uhh, faded, and Fenris was completely dressed and ready to walk out.:crying: After that I kept clicking on him, and going to his mansion  and clicking on him there, but nothing! TALK TO ME, FENRIS! Y U NO LOVE ME! Pure torture for the rest of Act 2.
Seriously, I think Hawke deserved an extra conversation there, to go see him and ask "what the hell?". Even if Fenris just snaps "I don't want to talk about it", it would have been better, because then Hawke would have shown some initiative, rather than just sit there and be fine with getting dumped.

So agree on the extra convo for Hawke and Fenris, after he walks out. Now, I always push back Bitter Pill to a little later in the second act. And I don't do All That Remains until AFTER the tryst. Then I give him the book just before the last quest in Act.2. This gives me the sense of "extra convos", even if it isn't talking about the elephant in the room. LOL!

As Ren knows, I have done both the Friendmance and Rivalmance. I think the Rivalmance is good, actually, but I "prefer" the Friendmance. And yes, I friendmance him with a pro-mage PC quite often. With as much meta-knowledge that I have of the game, I can max him pretty quickly, without playing as a complete hypocrite. And of course, once he is locked in on Friendship, there is no worries of Rival points when I continue to stand up for mages. Both ways have their merits, and it is nice that we have both options, even if they aren't always executed perfectly.

Well...I think I'm gonna remake the Hawke I was doing (didn't get past escaping Lothering anyways), and turn her into a Mage. I really want to give the Rivalmance a shot. I have a feeling the Friendmance is still better, but hey...don't know 'til you try, right?

So, I have some good news on the story front! Over the weekend I went searching through my old save files because I had made a Rogue Hawke with the sole purpose of her being dedicated to fanfiction (I would make specially named saves right before something important. Mostly all the Fenris quests...hehe). I am happy to say I found a save right before "All That Remains" starts. I was playing around with it a little bit, and I remember more of DAII than I originally thought I did, so...yay! Right now, I'm just working on finishing up the thirteenth chapter of my Dishonored fanfiction, then I'll be headed back to work on my short story for my Gothic Literature class. So, thank you once more for all the help, everyone!

If you all don't mind, can I post the link to the story here, once I have it up on fanfiction.net? I'd really like your opinions on how I did. :)

@Caedis Lupa - Of course you may post your story. There have been a number of Fen-fans who have linked their fan-fics in this thread (and in their signatures). Tis all good. ;)

I've never considered writing fanfiction of my games. For some reason it just doesn't work for me, I don't play in other people's sandboxes. I create my own fiction, but get inspiration from elsewhere too.

Fenris is a big inspiration in one story I'll be working on once I finish my current project. It's a similar sort of thing, a man is given markings that glow faintly, but the circumstances are different. He's a hybrid (two different species of "elf" like people), his markings are scarification, and it's an attempt to raise a banished god. He doesn't lose his memory.

I sometimes worry about getting too similar to other fiction sources, and whether someone will look at what I've written and be able to see where I drew inspiration. I'll snag names and modify them (or sometimes not- Deschain will be obvious to any King fan, but it's a horse and not a person), and some names might not be so noticeable. It can be a fine line between inspiration and borrowing, especially for some people.

Fenris and Valen Shadowbreath are neck-in-neck my favorite BW characters of all time. They've made a big impression on the kinds of fiction I want to write and the stories I want to tell. But, try as I might, I can never really delve into someone else's world and write anything proper using their rules.

That said, the artwork and other stuff associated with them is absolutely yummy!

So... I was in the mood for reading some Fenris fanfic. He is my favorite DA2 LI, after all. Do you guys know of any particularly good FemHawke+Fenris stories? I read one by Lilou88 that I really liked, but I'd like to read more by other authors.

Depending on how racy you like your fanfic, Felix Culpa ( archiveofourown.org/series/44620 ) by vanityofvanities is outstanding. Horrible at times (there are some particularly brutal and harrowing scenes set in Tevinter), but really good stuff - and there's a sequel.   <3

Sorry Flemmy, but I think he was referring to my post.

I like that second picture. It's great but I think the coloring makes it better.

Yeah, I was referring to mnomaha post entirely.

Just wanted to clarify "no sex" as a line for impossible but funny ship, if someone ever writes that parody fanfic
