Is that supposed to be an insult to my level up abilities? I always dumped as many points in STR as I can with Fenris.
Haha no, sorry if it does sound that way. It was more of a rant to those, who would screw his development with pumping health and mana, invest into Defender and Battlemaster skill trees, and then complain about him being half-useless and worse tank than Aveline. Like if he was ever meant to be.

Aveline is a good hit taking tank, but Fenris is a better hit giving tank, I think. I always specc'd up his stamina quite a bit and developed the sh!t out of his Tevinter Fugitive tree, as well as Warmonger and Two-handed. And buffed him up with as much health and stamina accessories as possible. Varric needed stamina refills more than Fenris did! lol!
Yep Fenris is my current take, as I am playing just him and Hawke currently He makes a decent tank, I mean Lyrium Ghost makes him practically invisible. I do have to make him stay in position though. He likes to sprint through the battlefield willy-nilly, leaving Hawke to fend for himself.

Yeah he does that. And then, when he's all the way on the far side of the battle and you're not really thinking where he is, he suddenly rushes up next to you with that two-handed charge he does. One thing I loved was during a battle I saw a rogue coterie go all smoky and creep toward Varric so I used the in-game pause to take a moment to highlight that enemy and then used Winter's Grasp to freeze the weasel so I could get to Varric in time and as soon as gameplay resumed, the guy was stuck in place, frozen... Oh it was a blast watching it all unfold! Before I could get to Varric, Fenris saw the frozen guy, zipped over to him and smashed him to pieces with Mighty Blow. It was glorious!
Fenris is an evade tank, if you can put it that way. Boost his Cunning along with STR and he's pretty much unkillable with a bit of maneuvering around bosses (which means stick to their asses). You don't need either of his health or mana high, first is based on a rule - if you can't hit me, you can't kill me (high mresist helps in case of magic attacks, which doesn't miss), and second - just let him kill and he will have unlimited mana, thanks to Inner Reserves and natural Warrior's ability. I've never had a need for him to have more than 150 mana, considering 45% of which is taken by sustained modes.
Also, Vanguard tree is way more effective in conjunction with Lyrium Ghost (and in case you boost his Cunning), than any other basic skill tree. It's worth every point put into it, just read the skills descriptions.

I never invest much into his mana. I haven't had much need of it for him. Cunning is important since he will target more dangerous enemies more effectively and strike critical hits more often with it pumped up. He dashes in, takes a devastating swing and then ghosts away. I like boosting Taunt for him. Once he had an enemy's attention and they got close, he'd go ghost on them and they were gone in short order. hehehe... I remember one big fight, the killing blow was actually Fenris but the cut scene intruded with my Hawke. I was like "What? That's not how it went!" lol!
I earned a present fic from Hatsepsut by writing the 700th (I think) review for one of her stories. My request took on a life of its own in her imagination and the result is a monstrous present of 170 pages in Word. The first chapter is now up for everybody else to read. It's already finished, so no fear that it's going to be abandoned. Warning: lots of smut in the beginning, followed by lots of drama.

Noo, the link does not work? Another one? *wanna read* This is only based on a feeling, but does it seem like there is more MALEHawke/Fenris fics than FEMALEHawke/Fenris out there?
No, Im sorry. I stopped drawing maybe 5-6 years ago. Must have been a wave of obsession that resulted in that drawing. But thanks for the compliment. I wish I drawingdepression could end... But it doesnt seem to...

I'm hooked! Silly Hawke as always a magnet for problems, but it seems this time the hammer will fall not onto his head.

I squeezed some of the last life out of my dying graphics card to load my Fenris saves (yes, I saved prior to every conversation with Fenris. For my fic, I swear ), searching for the part where he says he has no memory of ever being intimate with anybody else. Couldn't find it. Checked Youtube and it turned out you can only ask about it with a friendmance Hawke during QB in Act 2. I don't get it. He says exactly the same thing to my male rivalmance; the only difference is that I do not get the question on the dialogue wheel. I wonder why that is. I can't come up with a sensible explanation (except for a forced difference between the two romances, that is).
Oh well. It was nice to hear Fenris again after such a long time. I think I'm going to ignore this newly gained knowledge in my writing.
I always found that line a bit iffy. I think he says something along the lines of "I have never let anyone get too close..." in a sort of nervous voice, after Hawke asks, "You've been alone all this time?" or something. (I'm probably butchering this dialog sequence.)
Anyway, even though I headcanon that Fenris hasn't physically been with anyone since being abused by Danarius and escaping his vile clutches the way he words it could be interpreted as just... he hasn't formed any relationships with anyone before Hawke, not necessarily that he hasn't had sex.
Fenris: I... have never allowed anyone too close. When my markings were created the pain was... extraordinary. And the memory lingers. But you are unlike any woman I have ever met. With you it might be different.
Hawke: Are you saying what I think you're saying?
Fenris: If there was someone before, I have no memory of it.
Hawke: There was no one after you escaped, even?
Fenris: I stayed nowhere for long. Who would I trust? I didn't think I need anyone. Or wanted anyone. Until now.
It's true that the dialogue is rather vague, but considering the heart response after this little side-track is (to Fenris' earlier "with you, it might be different") "we could find out" and Fenris' response is "on another evening, perhaps", it does suggests the more physical side of romance. Of course this conversation also rules out Fenris having friends or other intimate relationships before Hawke, but again, I sense Hawke fishing for Fenris' virgin status. The paraphrase of the first question is "so you've never...", which reminds me a lot of the well-known exchange with Alistair on a similar topic.
Ahh thanks Yeah, I always felt he meant that he hadn't been physically intimate with anyone since he lost his memories, but your breakdown convinces me the game supports that notion and it's not just a headcanon. Great, now I feel sad again, thinking about the poor thing being so alone all those years

Gaider said him and Danarius' relationship was intimate. The way Danarius spoke about Fenris and his choice in intonations did suggest something a bit sordid to me. So I always assumed he meant he never did anything with another person that was actually serious and by his own will.
Yeah, I know about Danarius and his nasty insinuation, but from Hawke's perspective this conversation really seems about Fenris being a virgin. In hindsight Fenris might have been a little vague on purpose because, as you say, he has never been romantically involved with consent from both parties. Either he is embarrassed about that part of his past and doesn't want Hawke to know, or he honestly refuses to "let it count" because it's so different from what has developed with Hawke. Or maybe both.

I don't think that many would talk about past sexual abuse openly, at least not until they've developed a really close relationship. And certainly not a person like Fenris, who's very guarded by the nature.
What bothers me most about the Fenris romance is the whole waiting 3 years to discuss their night together and then just jumping into a relationship like the Bitter Pill scene happened only a few weeks prior. Really? It's even sillier than Anders/Merrill moving in right after sex.
I bet most people can't even complete the Fenris romance without meta-gaming; especially on the first playthrough. There are so many obstacles. There are bugs like clicking "So you're ending it" which doesn't have a broken heart icon but ends the romance or that sleeping with Isabela beforehand can stop the romance from starting. You can't sleep with anyone after Fenris dumps you even if you end it afterwards because apparently Fenris expects you to be celibate for 3 years. And if you somehow avoid all these obstacles you still need 100% friendship/rivalry to begin the relationship again. That is not easy to get without meta-gaming what to say, which quests to bring him, gift locations, etc. On my first playthrough I only got Merrill, Anders, and maybe Varric to the max. Merrill because she was romanced and I was a mage and therefore pro-mage. Anders because Night Terrors alone results in 50 rivalry by taking Torpor's deal. Varric is just very approving as long as you don't treat him like crap.
I don't think the developers expect most players to end up with Fenris unless you're really committed. He has less content than others with so many roadblocks along the way. I do believe a mage Hawke/Fenris romance had the potential to be the best but Bioware never went anywhere with it. Besides a few lines acknowledging that Hawke is a mage Fenris still has the same bitter attitude towards mages through the entire game even though his lover is one. His opinions on them never sways and there is no cutscene where he discusses falling for a mage or anything. The most you can get, romance or not, is him defending the mages in the end-game. The mage Hawke dynamic screams fan-fiction honestly.
Or rather, I'm not all that impressed with any of the romances as to single out Fenris'. I think my Hawke's are better off becoming celibate nuns/monks in this game.
