Well, I wouldn't want the kind of cameos we got in DAII, and both of them have little to no reason to become important plot figures/NPCs, until the game hits the lands north of Minanter river. As much as it's tempting to see them in Frostbite ;)

At least they're not canonically dead, like Anders.

I don't know, if they do the same to Fenris as they did to Zevran, he will probably look worse than Solas.

I can't help it! I don't think I'll ever recover from what they did to poor Zev. =]

All I want from a Fenris/Hawke cameo in DA:I is for them to be in the background somewhere discussing something incredibly domestic like grocery shopping. Also I need to go house shopping for them XD Some little hamlet or teeny tiny town somewhere would be perfect.

All those talks about the Keep and choices (particularly evil ones) made me make this video, to remind that there are still faces behind your choices. Even if you don't see them.

That video was so heartbreaking! That particular part in the game hits me in the feels every time.

I had to literally use the search engine to find this thread again because I couldn't find what page it was on :(

I used to post a few times in here but I had to come in here again since I am replaying through DA:2 on my Aggressive Male Hawke who is total bro's with Fenris. I am so tempted just to romance him again lol.

I have come to really appreciate Fenris each time I re-play the game. I love him more and more each replay which I didn't think it was possible. His romance and storyline is so well developed and engaging I remember lurking on here just to read all the interesting and in depth analysis of Fenris and his story. I hope we get to see him again in DA:I, especially since Hawke will be showing up as well. He is one of my all time favorite video game characters. So wanted to come in here and just give Fenris the appreciation he deserves :)

My favorite Fenris moment is probably in his companion quest Alone. The way he looks at Hawke when you tell him "I'm here, Fenris", breaks my heart each and every time. I uploaded a video of the moment for reference.

I'm really late to responding to that video, renfrees, but you did a great job at it! I really liked the editing. And I can't believe you handed Fenris over. :o I thought this would be another romance video with a happy ending! :crying: After hearing that Isabela apparently drowned a ship full of slaves I can't really find it in me to feel sorry for her if you allow the Qunari to take her. Especially because she escapes anyway. But giving Fenris to Danarius is probably the cruelest thing you can do in the DA games. Well, I guess it doesn't beat slaughtering the Dalish with the werewolves in DAO, but other than that... it's so sad to see how he just crumbles and completely loses the power and will to fight he's always shown.

@ Jilinna: just do it! :P There's no resisting the broody elf! I should know. I've been writing about this guy for almost three years now and the story is STILL NOT DONE. Oh Fenris, why are you doing this to me? I recently did a friendmance with a female rogue, because most of my memories are of the rivalmance by now. I am tempted to redo the rivalmance playthrough I used for my fanfiction as well, just because I adore that Hawke and his relationship with Fenris. Shame I enjoy the rest of DA2 not even half as much. The companions (and especially Fenris) are really what carries the game for me.

I didn't, Fenris is my darling :) I made this video as a reminder to those, who jauntily discuss the worst world states in the Keep, that this lowliest scum Hawke is them.

I actually did it once with my evil blood mage (who couldn't get over the fact he walked out on her) but afterwards I didn't feel like playing her anymore. Whenever I went to the Hanged Man the Alone cutscene would trigger again, only with an invisible Fenris in it (could still hear his voice). Fitting punishment, I guess. :crying:

Ouch, and you asked me why? I, at least, let him walk his own path after QB A3 with my bloodmage Hawke, where I had 2 companions at the end.

I'd say that siding with the templars in The Last Straw is worse as well. Certainly on par with the werewolves.

One thing I'm curious about is what people like about Fenris. I can certainly find many traits to admire, and acknowledge that he's an exceptional person, but I've never really been able to like him.

Oh, I like many things, and could go on about them for hours, but what strikes me - is his loyalty. To Fenris, Hawke is the most important person, and he'll stick to him/her no matter what, if you earn his friendship/respect. Even going against his beliefs, if needs to.

The other one - is his honesty. He'll say everything in your face, take it or leave it. No lies, no manipulations, no tricks.

These two traits is what I cherish the most and seek in a close relationship.

I'd say that siding with the templars in The Last Straw is worse as well. Certainly on par with the werewolves.

I don't think the mage/templar choice was supposed to be on par with the werewolves. It was Bioware's intention to have a morally grey choice, but they didn't handle it well. It was basically a repetition of the choice in Broken Circle, only under even more questionable circumstances. I think that is why Bioware retconned the presence of children in the Circle away. We never saw or head of any in DA2, and World of Thedas states onset of magic usually occurs during teenage years. But every mage we have spoken to and can discuss their background with developed magic as a child. Not only Anders, Wynne, mage Warden and (likely) Morrigan, but Jowan as well, who was supposed to be a weak mage.

When siding with the templars you can argue that most mages there probably are corrupt, whereas with the Dalish Zathrian was the only one in the wrong. Still, with both you know you will have to kill innocents as well, which doesn't make the choice all that grey for me.

One thing I'm curious about is what people like about Fenris. I can certainly find many traits to admire, and acknowledge that he's an exceptional person, but I've never really been able to like him.

I suspect for a lot of people these things are intertwined (liking Fenris because of his admirable traits and because he is quite exceptional), but Anders running the clinic is certainly admirable and yet I don't like him, so I can see your point. So things to like about Fenris:

1. For me the first thing is his sense of humor. It can be quite subtle and very dry, but he actually holds up very well against sarcastic Hawke (only once instance where he gets really annoyed and you earn rivalry for being snarky). Merrill doesn't get your jokes, Aveline doesn't find them very funny, and Anders generally hates being the butt of Hawke's jokes. Admittedly, most of the sarcastic "jokes" are lame and not very funny, but it's still a great plus that Fenris can roll with it and that you can even pry a few laughs out of him.

2. His voice.

3. His rationality when discussing his views (on magic). Despite what many people like to claim about Fenris, he is not a mindless mage-hater. He has arguments for his position, can admit that the Circle system is not ideal, but it's the best option in a set of limited possibilities. You can discuss these things with him and disagree with him, and he won't leave your group or rip out your heart.

4. The passion behind his feelings. Fenris does not wear his heart on his sleeve, but when you do get him to open up he is sincere, honest, and passionate.

5. Did I mention his voice?

6. His ability to see he has gone too far and apologize for it. I think every time Fenris lashes out at you he reigns himself in immediately (or shortly) afterwards and apologizes to you. I think it can take more strength than one realizes and shows his modesty and sincerity.

7. HIS VOICE!

I agree with all of your reasons for loving darling Fenris, Dutchess and renfrees. He's definitely my favorite romance in DA2. And his voice is absolutely divine. I've played DA2 quite a few times, and I usually skip through a lot of dialogue because it's faster to read it (and there are some characters who shall remain nameless that I don't want to listen to), but I always listen to Fenris. One of my favorite lines is during his rivalry Act 3 QB quest where he growls at Hawke in the Tevinter language. Shivery. :)

I don't know if you all play Skyrim, but Gideon Emery (Fenris) voices quite a few characters in the game. There is one quest where the PC has to kill a character with Fenris' voice. The entire time I'm slaying him, I'm usually saying, "I'm sorry, Fenris!" over and over. :D

Haha, yes, I play Skyrim and I love hearing Fenris everywhere. It's especially funny if two Imperial soldiers have a conversation and they both have Emery's voice.

Now that you mention that quest I also remember my first encounter with that character. It was pretty embarrassing (and funny). I heard the character say something like "what, and let you claim the credit for this place? The glory shall be mine!" and of course I recognized the voice. I got excited and rushed forward "IS THAT YOU, FENRIS?" and then the character with The Voice attacked. Crap.  I was totally disappointed and nearly got myself killed (played a sneaky character who can't handle being detected that well).

Lol! I'm not sure if we are referring to the same quest, but I can definitely imagine your scenario happening. The worst for me is the second or third main Dark B. quest where you have to kill the Commander's son. My Dragonborn strolls into the city (Dragon Bridge?) to steal his schedule to make the assassination easier, and I freeze when I hear someone with Fenris' voice bidding farewell to his love. I'm like, "Oh, please don't let him be my target."

Then I approach him, see his name, and he says in The Voice, "Back off, Citizen." I shout, "Nooooooo!" It all went downhill from there. Very sad.

I should clarify that the things I find admirable tend to be his resilience and combat prowess more than anything moral.

I suppose for me, I just find his anti-mage stance to be too much of a hurdle, in addition to his utter viciousness toward Merrill (Anders has some of that, but it appears to be grounded in condescending concern more than the actual malice Fenris displays; I've little doubt that he'd kill both Merrill and Anders in a heartbeat if it wasn't for Hawke).

I don't think Fenris hates Merrill. It feels to me more like a disdainful pity to a person, who had everything he had desperately craved ("You had a life, you had a family"), and squandered it for some self-imposed cause nobody but her wants.

Anders, he despises. Mostly for being weak.

I would romance him on that character but I have never been able to bring myself to romance Merrill once in 6 playthroughs lol. 7th is the charm? Will see if I can manage it. I'll be rivalmancing her. I have romanced Anders, Isabela and Fenris twice but never Merrill.

My most recent was a friendmance female sarcastic rogue as well and I loved their romance it was soo good! I loved romancing him on a sarcastic Hawke, like you said sarcastic Hawke and Fenris work so well together. Fenris usually can put up with my terrible jokes. There is also those few times where you make him laugh from your jokes or smile sweetly and I die for those scenes they are so heart warming. Seeing Fenris smile is probably one of my favorite things in the game. He has been through so much. He deserves to be happy for once. Watching Fenris be friends or lovers with Hawke is heart warming to watch.

Here are two moments I thought were really stellar with a Sarcastic Hawke so I uploaded them to show you guys!

Oh, then I'm actually talking about a different NPC. He was an Imperial general (named Sulla, I believe) and together with an Imperial woman at the end of a Dwemer ruin. They turn hostile towards each other after the dialogue I mentioned, but if you show your face they want to kill you first.  I have done the DB quests as well, but I must have forgotten that one of your targets was the Fenris as well. What I remember most about that quest was it glitching and the guy not following the route of his schedule at all (apparently happens if he detects you/you talk to him). I would fast travel to the city he was supposed to visit and then his quest marker was somewhere in the wilderness, not going in the right direction at all.

I should clarify that the things I find admirable tend to be his resilience and combat prowess more than anything moral.

Merrill and Anders are a blood mage and an abomination respectively, and therefore embody everything that can go "wrong" with magic. I think Fenris' ability to be civil with Bethany and mage Hawke proves that he can respect mages as long as they prove willing and able to resist turning to corruption. Merrill appears very innocent with all her awkwardness and naivety, but she is also stubborn and foolish, dealing with things she thinks she can control but actually cannot. That's the sort of arrogance Fenris fears and hates in mages. He's not nice to Merrill, no, but I think he has little reason to be. It's one of those cases where his honesty makes him harsh. If he disagrees so strongly with something as blood magic, he is not going to pretend to be okay with the person who practices it. He's not going to play nice and be friends, because for him it's clear from the start that person can't be trusted and doesn't deserve his respect. He also does warn Merrill about the path she is on, but Merrill dismisses every kind of criticism against her choices until the very end.

I don't think Anders is that much nicer to Merrill either. Their banter is less heated, but after Marethari dies Anders says something along the lines of "it would have been better if it had been you". I think that's about equal to Fenris' "monster" comment.

Ha, I've never romanced Merrill either. Only completed Fenris and Isabela. I tried Anders once but couldn't finish it. And I agree about making Fenris laugh. :D Very rewarding. I can imagine Hawke trying to be more goofy just to get another laugh out of Fenris.

Merrill never tries to control anything she can't. What trips her up in the end is Marethari's treachery, and why would she anticipate that?

However, I will appreciate Fenris being honest about being paranoid, mean and potentially murderous, that I may avoid him in the future.
