Wow,thanks for all the love from Fenris fans  :D   I know love can be such a f*ed up drug sometimes, and Anders will always be that drug for me... Ok,all the Qun talking is sounding a little Martian to me~ I've only played this game twice, and the first time didn't even count because I started the game with the default world state few years back...anyway,and the other thing I love the most about Fenris is the fact he always seems to be his own boss and looks like he doesn't need anybody, but at the end I need to talk him over to my side (I supported the mages, first he left me,but then after a little talking between us he said something to Meredith like:I changed my mind,human!)...and I saw just a bit of vulnerability,a bit of unsureness and seeking guidance from another, and finally truly trust someone (even a human like Hawke)...like I said, that's so REAL.

hello JJ would u like to read my fanfics? Feat our fav elf :D http://archiveofouro...inamarieseregon are u on A03?

It kinda bothers me that Fenris isn't happy with any of the options you choose in what to do with the slave girl.

If you let her go free, he is like "She's probably gonna get robbed and killed on the road".

Well, he's a cynical guy. :P

It doesn't bother me, really. He's satisfied when you give Orana a job, once he understands you're not making her your slave.

On the other hand he immediately apologize even ask if you say you paid to work. (He only continued to grumble, when you say him before that a slave is an useful thing.)

I'm rethinking a lot of things in my overall canon storyline in the series and my DA2 romance is one of them. It used to be Merril, but I've come to think of her more as a sarcastic douche than the puppy most people see.

In truth, I'd always considered Fenris the best romance option in this game, but I hesitated because my canon Hawke is male.

Maybe I could self-insert less and appreciate a good love story for what it is. Just one last problem, though: My Hawke probably will die when I get around to starting my canon pt on DAI... because Alistair.

And of all LIs, I believe Fenris is the one that would have the hardest time dealing with that.

Yeah, but then Hawke asks "I will pay her. Better?" to which Fenris responds "Barely".

LOL, while I don't think Merrill is a douche, I do think people tend to infantilize her a lot and fail to notice her occasional passive-aggressiveness.

For what it's worth, I love the male Hawke/Fenris romance (but then, I'm not much of a self-inserty type). I like to imagine the skinny superstrength elf launching his bara boyfriend out the window when he gets annoyed. The romance feels very organic and I never felt like the narrative was pushing a hetero romance. Just felt like two people spent a lot of time together, supported and disagreed with each other on occasion, and eventually fell in love.

Just one last problem, though: My Hawke probably will die when I get around to starting my canon pt on DAI... because Alistair. And of all LIs, I believe Fenris os the one that would have the hardest time dealing with that.

If you're able to leave Hawke in the Fade on a Fenrismance, you're made of sterner stuff than me. After "nothing could be worse than the thought of living without you..." and "Promise me you won't die? I can't bear the thought of living without you." I am utterly incapable of not throwing [Insert Warden Here] under the bus. C'est la vie, sucka! :wizard:

1. I never left my Hawke in the Fade (and I dont have grey warden Allistair, only king and drunk), because:

a ) My Hawke have family (Carver and Fenris – Fenris do not would be happy, if Hawke die in the Fade… absolutely not! And perhaps Carver would be sad too – even if he is a Templar. :) ).

b ) The grey wardens have infection, what will kill they, however Hawke healthy, ergo: the grey warden the logical solution. (Or, i just like my Hawke...)

2. Yes, that's what I said. When I first replied that the slave is useful stuff, Fenris gives an angry response, even if in the ultimately I promise, i will pay her.

Do it, dude :)  Even from just a technical perspective, it's really well done.  FYI, there are three versions of the Act 2 kiss, depending on where you're at with friendship/rivalry.  If you feel like doing multiple play throughs, I'd highly recommend doing both the friendship and rivalry versions.  I think they both offer really good insight into his character.

Given the stuff that he says to Hawke, yeah definitely.  He's not entirely without friends for support, especially if Aveline marries Donnic but it's also not like there's something like phones for instant contact.

I hate Here Lies the Abyss.  Hate.  So I never leave Hawke in the Fade, mostly out of spite.  My 'canon' (or the only one I've been able to finish with) inquisitor was a pro Templar, human noble who I tried to play as fairly manipulative/out for power kept Hawke on the theory that he could be recruited as an agent and the Wardens as an organisation, would understand the need to sacrifice someone.

The reaction you get over Orana does depend on your dialogue choices, as well (and maybe personality type?).  If you point out the you've just given her a job, he does apologise.  It's a pretty personal thing for him though, so I cut him a little slack.

I can attest that the response is based on personality type. A blue/diplo Hawke says, "I gave her a job, Fenris," after which he says, "Ah... that's good. I apologize."

I agree, I think Hawke had enough of a set personality to just enjoy the story/romance for what it is, without having to self insert. That was one advantage DA2 had over DAO and DAI with the more blank slate protagonists, in my opinion. I've tried all the romances.

I ended up loading a save to double check (since I couldn't remember the others, and it was bugging me), and it's the same for all three.  It's the response to 'Come work for me' > 'I will pay her'.

the amount of times he will apologise to Hawke always stands out.  I don't think any of the other companions come close, even when there's reason for it.

I agree. I like a blank slate protagonist - both have their merits - but with Hawke it felt like s/he was a real person. And so the romances felt that much more realistic, too.

I noticed that, too! It's something I love about this character. Even through the haze of rage and hurt, he tries to think critically, and apologizes when he feels he's made a mistake. I always liked, "You and I don't always see eye to eye, but that doesn't mean you deserved my anger. I owe you an apology."

If I were to address all examples, we'd be here all day. It's just something Merril does a lot. Like when Aveline says "I understand" and instead of appreciating that she replies with "Oh, good. Someone should."

Or again, with Aveline, when the former asks about the mirror with no accusations or judgment attached and yet Merril just keeps trolling her with sarcastic jokes.

People overlook that side of the character because they interpret everything she says like "Oh, Merril! You so clueless and cute!". But those moments usually are made clear, with either the companions or Merril herself pointing it out.

The other advantage is that the game does focus on Hawke's character. You truly feel like this is his/her story. The Warden and the Inquisitor seem more like a mere tool to make the main plot move forward.

Yes, Merrill very well know what she wants.Passive-agressive not a really bad definition, i think. (She can still be cute, but not helpless ...)

You need only to defend yourself when you actually are attacked. That isn't always the case with Merrill.

Yeah, I think it's more like, she plays up her vulnerability to get Hawke to want to help/protect her, when she is really much more intelligent and capable than she seems. But to be honest, I don't think it is supposed to be all an act or anything like that. She is eccentric and kind of a loner due to her unconventional beliefs... Plus all of the companions/love interests try to get Hawke's attention and protection like that, and all of them are sort of dependent at first I think.

Not Gomez, but I'll answer anyway.

A self insert is when people play RPGs as basically themselves, make decisions based on their own morality or preferences, and so on.

Yeah, that. :P Basically, when you self-insert you're pretending you're actually in the game and reacting like you would if you lived in Thedas. But other people like to create characters who are separate from themselves and have very different reactions than they themselves have.
