Here is a person who REALLY hates the idea. I wouldn't go nearly that far, but to each their own. I just like the idea that he likes saying Hawke's name more, lol.

Yes. I think it just" does not fit" Fenris. There are people who are reluctant to use the word: love. Why? Bad memories, shyness? Or just uncomfortable? I do not know.

I could see it slipping out in the heat of the moment, but I don't see him using it in the same way that Dorian uses "amatus" (that is, frequently). Or how Bull uses kadan, Zevran uses amor, Sera uses honey tongue/tadwinks/teetness, etc. Like, some couples use pet names all the time, calling each other baby, and while I can definitely see my Hawke using sweetheart or love to refer to Fenris...

...I feel like, to Fenris, "Hawke" is enough. "Hawke" says it all. He says it with such fondness (and exasperation ) by the end of the game that your surname almost feels like an endearment in and of itself. Gaider wrote them both, and I feel like if he wanted Fenris to use amatus, he would have.

Keep in mind these are just my thoughts.

I agree with most of this except, "Gaider wrote them both, and I feel like if he wanted Fenris to use amatus, he would have."

Not necessarily that it isn't the case, but having the LI from Tevinter use that as an endearment may not even have occurred to him at the time he was writing Fenris. It may have and it was a conscious decision, as you think it was, or it may not have been a thing at all. We can't really know unless he tells us.

I don't say that he would or wouldn't, it was just something I thought of when thinking about the word recently, so I decided to ask. As I've said before, I don't read fanfic, so what other people do in the fandom when they're writing Fenris has no impact on me. If I were to write Fenris fanfic, I likely would not have him use it either because I prefer to stay close to game material in my writing.

My Inquisitor doesn't use endearments on a regular basis, and neither do I in real life. I certainly don't think that every couple has to use them or anything like that.

You know, I never understood why people get so bent out of shape about certain LIs not using the word "love" or saying the phrase "I love you". I didn't even notice until I started lurking on the BSN and fans were grumbling about it, or I'd read a fic where it was "corrected". I don't want to start in with all that ~love languages~ stuff, but it's true that different people communicate and express their love in different ways. Fenris saying I am yours, given his history, feels just as powerful as Anders' dramatic declarations.

So I understand what that blog was getting at even if I don't think what somebody wrote in a fanfic deserves that much vitriol...

True, there's no way to know, and I don't think it matters much. And it's entirely possible that it just didn't occur to Gaider... but given that he wrote both Zevran and Dorian and they both use endearments from their native tongue, and with the way Fenris drops Tevene curses... I suspect it was intentional, but again, we'll never know unless we ask.

Oh no, I get what you're saying. Like I said, I don't think it matters much. I also prefer to stick close to canon, and while Fenris is full of feeling and very passionate and honest about his love for Hawke, I just never felt the need to add a pet name. But *shrugs* I don't care if anyone else does.

I wonder, would the feminine form just be "amata"? If Tevinter shows up in DA4, maybe we'll get a chance to use that.

^ Actually, one of the reasons that I like the Fenris romance is because he doesn't say it. The Dorian romance too for that matter, his use of "amatus" aside. With both of those men it's never bothered me that they're both rather emotionally closed off, yet you can still see their feelings.

I'm gonna respond to the bolded statements:

1. I agree, I feel like "I am yours" is pretty much just him saying "I love you" in his way, even more meaningful than "I love you" in that it shows his complete trust of Hawke since his main thing was not being owned by anybody and "I am yours" denotes ownership in some form...but this time him giving himself to Hawke willingly.

2. You guys should go on Twitter and ask him. Seriously. He's answered my questions before, although sometimes they can be kind of vague for various reasons...it can't hurt anyway.

Amata... haha, yes, like this.

Fenris show his emotions good enough.

I think Anders slightly compensates not being able to completely give himself to love, because of Justice and mage issue. He just want to be sure, that Hawke to know, he loves him, even if there are other important things in his life.

Do you all think Fenris would call Hawke "amatus," as Dorian does with his guy? He does swear in Tevene, after all... lol. I can't really recall that he uses any sort of endearment at all, but they're not really together for very long in terms of game time and the structure of the cinematics doesn't really allow for him starting to use one.

He not only swear in tevene, remember: "Na via lerno victoria". Anyway, it's just bagatelle, the bottom line does not change, just suddenly it occurred to me.

One of the things I really like is how they gave each LI a unique but still IC way of doing the whole ILU thing (which is one of the reason I'm not a giant fan of Fenris using amatus the same way Dorian does)

^^ This.  L'I love you' tends to get thrown around at the drop of a hat, anyway.  It was awesome that Gaider went with something different, but just as powerful (tbh, more so, since it's something he comes up with and not just a commonly used phrase/term).

This. I don't know if there is a specific reason for Fenris to not just say "I love you". I don't really think it's shyness because "nothing could be worse than the thought of living without you" is hardly a weaker statement. And if twisted associations with Danarius taint the "love" word, why would Fenris ever opt for a phrase that implies possession as the alternative? His traumas, everything Danarius put him through, all of that was possible because he was the magister's property. He was Danarius'. If anything, the "I'm yours" is more meaningful coming from him, considering his background.

I don't think Danarius tainted the word "love", but yes its more than possibly, that the  "I'm yours" mean more dedication from him (whith his past), like from everyone else. It is also possible that the words "love" he just feel banal. What he says is actually better reflects the complete dedication:

Yes. Willingly. Keyword!

Whatever is the reason (of course not all the same in terms of his personality), the answer to the basic question (Use Fenris the word "amatus"?), is: absolutely not look like it.

^ No clue. Who knows what these devs get up to. I don't want him to. Nothing against Fenris, but I just prefer that there be as few carryovers as possible in the next game. I only want the people that have a good reason to be there. I'd really like for them to use DA4 to wipe the slate clean as far as that's concerned. Besides, any cameo likely would not be significant since he could be dead.

I wouldn't mind a cameo, if only to see Fenris rendered in Frostbite. <3

Hmmm. I think Inquisition-Hawke did not is well done, you may be disappointed from a Fenris cameo... and just remember DA2-Zevran... uh, no! Rather forget!

Aside from kind of wanting to see whay he'd look like (along with the rest of the companions, along with Zevran!) in Frostbite?

Not really.  I think the writers will move away from DAO/2.  DAI kind of felt like it was bridging the old style, with something different.  I'm interesting in seeing what they do, when they're not as tied to the older stories, and can do more of their own thing (but I wasn't a fan of how some of the old characters were handled, anyway)

And I don't want another cameo like Here Lies the Abyss.  Killing off player favourites is a lazy way of getting feels out of the player, and I'd be really unimpressed if the writers follow the #buryyourgays trope after all the things in the media lately (and Hawke and warden!Alistair both felt really OOC).

You guys are forgetting one thing about a Fenris cameo in the next game--we'd still get to hear his wonderful voice regardless of how he looks on Frostbite lol...and I am willing to take my chances so that I can see him again...I don't need him to have a huge part (like, say, Varric in DAI) but I'd like to see him again, I can imagine he might be taking this opportunity of crazy stuff going down in Tevinter to help slaves.

Nah, I think male Hawke looked great. My only gripe is with Marian's hair.

I think DA2!Zevran suffered more from the elves' redesign than anything. That was not a good look for him.

^ OH yes I've seen that before. It's really quite amazing.

Really, the only gripe I had with Fenris in DA2 was that his markings were poorly done, for some reason. (I tried to fix them with my mod.)

If Fenris does make a cameo in Tevinter, I hope he's carrying the Blade of Mercy. Poetic.

Those do look much nicer!

It always confused me that his markings look so dull (as in, not glowy) in-game when they're supposed to be glowing through his clothes or something..? And being more lyrium-y and blue? I guess it's all part of Fenris's design being rushed - they had to settle on something, lol.
