That's how you know it's a dark fantasy. This guy got it right, and BioWare just hasn't caught up with the cool kids.

@Maria Caliban, I thought he was inspired by Valen Shadowbreath?

Yes, but... that's far more lame than taking inspiration from More****.

Anarya wrote...

@Maria: I sort of hope not. Elric is a total ass.

He is. And an addict. And he murders his sister on accident because he's a self-involved twit.

I'm seriously hoping David knows the character.

Does anyone think Elric of Melnibone inspired David when he wrote Fenris?

Hehe. Hehehe. Brom's males. Hehe. *pervy giggle*

It is so fun to speculate what that censor means. Hell, even n@zi is censored on these forums.

Alright, here's a serious topic that may or may not have been discussed already. How do you think Darth Gaider was influenced in his creation of Fenris? I have no idea who Elric of Melnibone is. Other than visually, what's the character like and is his personality similar to what is known?

He reminded me of Geralt from The Witcher from the moment of his character reveal. Besides the obvious physical similarities, both are used as weapons, both had crazy stuff done to their bodies and minds, both suffer from amnesia (granted, Geralt's is not because of the crazy stuff done to him, but still).

And here I was thinking I'd have to stop drawing men in weird outfits/poses in order to be a professional. Pshh.

I have no idea, but worse yet is when the author decides to describe a derriere as consisting of "globes."

Cassandra: Dwarf.

Varric: What? You asked me to tell you about Hawke so I'm telling you about Hawke what more do you want?

Cassandra:
Well your choice of words to describe your merry little band is a bit derivative and repetitive.

Varric:
(muttering under breath) Everybody's a critic.

Moorc*ck is the author's last name.

It's ok if a character is an ass if he's a loveable ass. Elric is not a loveable ass. The exception is if the book is not really about the character, who is an ass. But that doesn't apply either. Which is why I only read one book and did not like it very much.

Micheal Moor[penis] is one of the most respected fantasy authors. George RR Martin, of A Song of Ice and Fire fame, as well as Neil Gaiman and China Miéville have all talked about his influence on their work.

In the 1970s, Moor[penis] began a series of short stories staring Elric. The white-haired elf was a classic antihero and the inspiration for Geralt of 'Witcher' fame. Elric was probably the most famous fantasy elf previous to Drizzt.

Does every character have to be 'lovable?' I mean, Morrigan wasn't conventionally 'lovable' but people love her. We've seen a number of selfish and b**** women in BioWare game. Why not a dude?

I suppose (me guessing) most of us are getting a little frustrating about no further Fenris info reveal. BioWare have revealed a few, like the rock wraith and Basti (a friend of mine happent to have a baby with the same name, now every time I saw the name pop up I directly linked him to a 1 year old baba 'Basti' :P) . But that's not the same.

Sparks flying a bit. Hope there is no more.

What have we found out about Carver? Bethany? Can't say we know too much about Aveline. Not having a river of info at your disposable isn't an excuse to rail on other people, to be rude, to be condescending, and to attempt to eject someone from a thread that doesn't belong to anyone.

@Maria: well loveable might be a bit strong for what I actually meant but for me, there has to be something there that's likeable, however small, or I just lose interest. Some people don't have this problem. But I stopped watching Breaking Bad and I couldn't get into Six Feet Under because in both cases I thought the entire cast was completely unlikeable and therefore I felt like I was wasting my time because I couldn't be bothered to care about any of them.

I actually liked Morrigan so it's a relatively rare occurrence for me. A Song of Ice and Fire kinda falls into that zone but it's more about the overarching plots and politics so it doesn't matter if I like the characters or not.

Oh and it's not a guys vs. girls thing. This applies equally regardless of gender for me.

it's not that strange, i kind of do the same thing. sometimes if i start a series and i get really into it i hate breaking off later in hopes that the plot will get better, but when it becomes painfully obvious that it doesn't, it's hard to stop watching/reading something because it had so much potential to begin with and you don't want the time you invested to be "wasted" because you never saw the series through to the end.

Talking about possible influences for a character isn't 'random offtopicness.'

It's very, very rare for me to dislike a BioWare companion. The last time I did was BG II while some of the ME character just sort of bore me.

I think the Dragon Age games benefit from having nasty companions. David has talked about how the companions function as 'setting ciphers.'

Well, it's a cruel world. This guy is a former slave who's had magical experiments done on him. He's an elf so even when comes to Kirkwall and becomes a 'freeman,' he'll still be looked down on and treated as a criminal or servant. Why shouldn't he be bitter or angry? What he knows of the world is not nice at all.

I can imagine him as being like Velanna only... better. She was too over the top. After awhile it felt more like parody than genuine resentment.

I'd be surprised if he didn't. Elric has to be one of the 5 most famous characters of the Sword & Sorcery genre.
If Fenris was inspired by Elric, then I'd definitely give off a manly squee.

Gah! Now I want an empathic sword. Not the kind that actually speaks, like Lilarcor or the Black Sword (no matter how awesome they were), but one with a will (and thirst) of its own. Doesn't feel very DA, though. :/

Which characters did you end up disliking (or ended up boring you in the case of ME)

I think we should just get back to talking/squeeing about Fenris  personally I'm trying to figure out what happened between last night when I asked what his former hair color might've been to now.  Yellow said her birthday was today  then the rest is a blur...
