I enjoy the romances because I feel they add a depth that had been sorely missing from the few WRPGs I played before stumbling onto KotOR. JRPGs are eaten up with them but it's not the same, as it's all predetermined usually. Or your typical main hero x female LI x random little girl who's smitten with him and honestly thinks she stands a chance.
When playing through KotOR, I had no real idea there was a romance. I was just being nice to Carth. Then I get to the Leviathan and Saul is torturing *him* to get me to speak? Going on about people I care for? Lightbulbs went off in my head. It was something I'd wanted in my games for ageeees. I adore Bioware for many reasons. They tell a kick
ass story. They make awesome characters and there are always some really funny moments that honestly make me laugh out loud.
But they also do very good romances, and that people are so interested in them is actually a badge of honor for the company, I think, rather than something to be mocked. A Bioware game without romances being available would feel incomplete to me.
