Imma screamin too. If Fenris was bisexual, my geek buddy would never leave me alone about it and bash the character, as he did with Zevran. Whenever I would try to say something about Leliana, he'd retort with a "Well, guys think it's hot."tankgirly wrote...

He is nice, but I literally think he'd be dubbed as a troll on the forums.

Use his own ammo against him? Much like many men find lesbians attractive, many women find gay men attractive.

Haha no kidding. The ammount of romance threads on the board is a little rediculous. And it's the first thing people wonder about. I guess bioware just does it that well. But when you announce "Better graphics and story! And improved combat!" and everyone asks "Can I bang the dwarf/elf?" you can't help but laugh. I won't lie, I enjoy the romances, but I do have several playthrough where I completley ignored them.
While I can understand how those comments can be tiresome, I can't see how they wouldn't be unexpected, and not just because of how frequent they are. Every good adventure story has a romantic subplot. The fact that Bioware allows us to not just have that subplot, but choose the partner as well as the way it plays out is a pretty unique experience. Very, very few developers also allow that, at least with the depth you find in Bioware games. Every company is going to be touting the graphics and combat in their games, and probably the story. Those are some things that all games share. What they don't, however, is the LI system. As that is unique, it's of course going to draw the most attention, especially for pre-release speculation. We can get fancy graphics and snappy combat anywhere. Immersive relationships, adding depth to not just the story and NPCs, but the player character as well? Not so much.
Old comment is old, but:

Oh!
You are right! But she had white eyebrows too, so maybe it was intended

remember one of the elves having stubble...
Doubtful. There's also an elven child
in Denerim with darker skin and white hair. So there is a precedent for
white hair, specifically on elves, and also specifically with a certain
range in skin tone. It's very much possible Fenris' hair was always
white.
Also, RE: Reaction to Dev Diary?
Of course, I'm too busy being excited about Carver and Varric to be disappointed about Fenris.

PROMPT I - HOPE
He stared blankly through the darkness.
There was no way he could get out of this place.
Yet whatever he had encountered in his dream- now fading fast- thought he could. Perhaps it was a splinter of madness, thinking he could ever escape from the mages and this god-forsaken place. Seeping through now into his sleep. Following him however long he stared out into the black of the cold dungeon he had been locked in. Following him however long he was experimented on by the magister. However long he was doing things he was forced to do.
The thoughts were chasing it.
The thing in his dream called itself "Hope". It had looked like... he couldn't describe it. There were no words he knew for it.
At first, he had run. It was something else- another tormentor, now living in his dreams. Or so he thought. But it had just wanted to talk. It wanted to know his name, and why he was so full of what it said felt like "emptiness". He had little idea of his actual name, only the one the magister called him. If it was even close to correct, probably not. So he had told the thing his name. He told it he didn't understand what it meant by he was "empty" but he told it his everyday life.
"You could always break free. You could always run." It had said, calmly and surely. Running had been an option he had considered on occasion, when he had been delirious from the pain. It had never been a rational idea. There had never been a plan to ever do so. He probably wouldn't even find his way out before he was caught again, or killed. He scoffed at the thing.
But it had just smiled... the best whatever it was could smile.
And then he had woken up.
He stared through the dark. No, it still was not a rational idea. Even if he could kill someone with his bare hands and run, he'd never get away fast enough. But the feeling was there. It wouldn't leave, no matter how hard he pushed at it.
Lights appeared in the hall outside the cell he was locked in when he wasn't being ordered around or experimented on. Again, they were coming for him. For what, he'd not be sure until they had him there.
He could see outside the cell, and heard the two "apprentices" of the magister (much more tools that would be discarded thoughtlessly later) bickering. They were thin, willowy, and young. Unsuspecting and fighting over trivial matters. They didn't even have enough power for spells to create their own light- they carried a torch instead.
They broke off their argument for one of them to open the cell door and bark, "C'mon, knife-ear."
Knife-ear. That phrase rang in his head. Whenever he was kicked, pushed, hit, stabbed, burned, humiliated, and a variety of other things, they barked that phrase at him.
Something snapped. Someone was screaming
."HELP! He's breaking free!" The other apprentice screamed as the other fell dead from his hands. He hit her in the head, quickly, and hard enough to make her be quiet. She slumped to the floor in seconds, the torch's flame wavering in her hands.
He'd probably be seen with it, but there was no other choice. There was no way his eyes could see through this darkness. He grabbed the torch and ran. Ran wherever this darkness went, and hoped for a way out.
He would eventually find his way out. He would go to Kirkwall, under the name the magister had given him for he had no other, but he was free. Running, but free. He would be known to work alongside the legend, Hawke... where he found a whole new meaning to "Hope".
His name was Fenris. And even though he would not realize it until later, a spirit had come to his aid when he had needed it most...
*Goes back to lurking, afraid for my life.*

Yes, you make a very good point. Many other games attempt some type of romance, and it is very rare that the player actually ends up feeling something towards the character. I remember playing Kotor2 and refusing to go through a door because I had the feeling Atton would die and I absolutley ADORED him. I was stuck on that part for at least a month until I realised what I was doing and charged through. It is very impressive that Bioware can pull this off and I would be suprised if they have either collaborated with psychologists and such or researched into human behavior. The writers are very talented to be able to create emotions in players. People ask for what they want and love, and obviously judging by the number of threads Bioware is the best in the buisness for relationships between the player and in game characters.

I'm hoping we'll get "Demons" this week in the prompt choice-- I've had an idea swimming in my head and I don't want to post it up until we're prompted.

Speaking of which Tanky how are going to showcase the entries this week? Just create a post similar to the first page this Thursday?
It will be very similar to what Zev thread is done I think. I've paste them all under one notepad files, with BBCode and everything. So on Thursday I will post them all up in one comment with every entry as a quote. It should be fun.

* I wouldn't make too big a deal of his touch-causes-pain thing. It's more of an aversion than actual physical agony. You'll see when you play, though honestly he doesn't dwell on it at all. It's not central to his story.
Touch can't cause him physical pain at all. Why? He does wear clothes. If touching his skin would cause pain, he surely wouldn't want cloths rub along his skin each time he tries to move. Thinking of a full body sunburn here... i never had that... but i can quite imagine how you might not want to wear cloths over a skin portion which hurts when its being touched.
So the only way a touch (and not clothes) could hurt him would be if whatever was done to him was designed to only hurt him if another living being touches him and he is being uneffected by dead organic material.
Anyway... makes more sense to me when he is a beaten puppy mentality flinching when someone touches him, because he is used to people just doing that to hurt him. I mean as opposed to him actually having physical pain.
David Gaider wrote...
That's why almost every action movie ever made has the hero getting the girl.
Which is, next to modern action movies investing rather into SFX than in good story writing, about the reason Action Movie Romances are boring and a waste of movie time. Seriously, its so annoying to have to suffer through some unimportant "Sexscene" in a movie just because they have to show how they connected in between explosions.
A videogame luckily does have the option to invest more time into the building of a relationship as a 2 hour action movie, but relationships in action movies are just bad and waste of everyones time and money. They never add anything to the movie, unless of course you happen to be lucky and the Barbie or the Hero is right up your alley and you like to see them in some unerotic sexscene or some semi romantic kiss.
Personally, and as a guy, i have to say i rather watch a movie like French Kiss (Meg Ryan movie) or Emai for you or something like that, than those really bland love stories they present in action movies.
And i might be wrong (and i'd consider that movie an action movie in his time) but casablanca does seem to have had a kind of unfullfilled romance, where he does not really get her.
Then again... they just don't make 'em like in the last century anymore. Today we rather get Robots with Balls and a plastic barbie than a good script and "real people" in movies. A trend i certainly would hope the Videogaming industry works against a little bit.
I certainly would like to have at least once a story you kind of don't get the girl. I mean.. think of Romeo and Juliet.. very much action for the time it was produced... and he doesn't get the girl... and whatcha know... its famous.
Or my most favorit love story... Tristan and Isolde. They really had some chemestry going... she.. the daughter of a king who wanted him killed, being wed to a King who kind of wants him dead even before he gets the chance to know Isolde. He gets send to fetch the bride to be, isn't killed by some odd chance and she mixes up the poison with the love potion. He even goes mad later because they can't be together and runs as madman through the forrest for a couple years until lancelot and a couple other knights come to pick him up. He marries another queen and never sleeps with her because there is only one for him, which makes his wife kill herself over the fact (which isn't good, but makes for a good read when it goes to explain how much he loved his Isolde) And thus it goes back and forth until he gets backstabbed and dies... without really getting the girl.
I mean just to point out that there are quite a lot "Action" Stories in literature with Lovestories with a Tragic end. And if you are going to polarize with your stories anyway... you might as well mix it up... instead of the oh so boring "they live ever happily after"... why not for a change mix it up with a Lovestory you feel heartbroken over because she turns out to be the bad guy (without it hinting the first minute you saw her) or her backstabbing the Hero because she was blackmailed and or simply because they die before they can get to the "happy ever after" stage.
Just for a change.
