I mean just to point out that there are quite a lot "Action" Stories in literature with Lovestories with a Tragic end. And if you are going to polarize with your stories anyway... you might as well mix it up... instead of the oh so boring "they live ever happily after"... why not for a change mix it up with a Lovestory you feel heartbroken over because she turns out to be the bad guy (without it hinting the first minute you saw her) or her backstabbing the Hero because she was blackmailed and or simply because they die before they can get to the "happy ever after" stage.
Just for a change.
That kind of thing is great in a book or movie, but in my games, where I tend to be role-playing, it'd kill any subsequent playthroughs for me. I may or may not enjoy the darkness for that one, but the game would be gutted for the others. I usually only end up liking *one* of the LIs, and if turned out to be the one that never would work out, I just don't do it. I'd probably never play the game but the once, and end up disappointed, with a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth. Others may enjoy having something like that after 40+ hours on a character, but I wouldn't. At all. Now in a book or movie, I eat it up. Odd how that is, I guess.
Case in point: Alistair and anyone who isn't HNF. I don't even bother to romance anyone on my Dwarf/Elves, and to that end, have never managed to finish a playthrough of those.
And yes, the love story really *is* that central to my enjoyment of the narrative. This has been true for any RP, fanfic, or game you get me into.
